I should have been clearer - that was a suggestion. True, it does not indicate direction, but it's a start.
Another idea is to perhaps have a game option that will put a red haze over a portion of the screen where the wolf is? (e.g. light up the left edge of the screen if the wolf is to the left, upper-right corner if the wolf is there, etc.)
@ImaginaryAlpaca, If you're a PC player, there is a save game editor you can use to have infinite weight. WeMod also supports this, I believe.
This is a good case to support mods - we have a player that may (or has) stopped playing because of a mechanic.
If I'm understanding your post correctly, you "find refuge from reality in The Long Dark", is that correct?
I believe we all "escape" in our own ways. I think it's important though that we stay grounded in reality and find a way to deal with the world around us.
Wolves have a "fear" setting slider whereas bears do not. In my experience, if a bear "detects" you, they will attack, otherwise not. As others have pointed out, pathing plays a role as well - this is why I try to shoot them from an inaccessible area such as a fallen tree or a rock face.
Every wonder why the power lines from the Dam in BR take such a long route to get to the prison? Why don't they just run the lines right down the hill and a direct line to the power plant?
