  1. Trunk first, grab the battery if one exists. Close the trunk, paint an X on the hood. Enter the driver's side door, harvest lead if I have a battery. Check the front of the car and glove compartment. Sometimes click the radio just for kicks. Exit the passenger side, enter rear and check for stuff on the back seat, exit the opposite side. Pop the trunk, move on.
  2. Imagine the tip of the arrow is your crosshair. At point-blank range (about 15 meters or closer), that's where the arrow will strike. (As an aside, contrary to what many believe point-blank doesn't mean "at close range". It means "a range at which you don't need to compensate for projectile drop". So while in this case point-blank IS short range, for a rifle it could be hundreds of meters.)
  3. It's worth noting that while sensitive electronics can be disabled by an EMP fairly easily, analog is typically pretty resistant. And to an extent the game agrees with this, since the party line phone still works. But to an extent it doesn't, because the flashlight does not, unless an aurora is active in the sky. Now electric current through induction is a thing--it's how wireless charging pads work. But that's extremely low amounts of energy. Providing the amount of power necessary to power an ELEVATOR through induction alone, when that elevator is inside a mine beyond dozens of meters of rock...well the intensity of the radiation would be so extreme it would disrupt life at the biochemical level. Meaning, you and everything else on the island would be dead. So basically it comes down to suspending disbelief entirely, because the permutation of events that exist in this game world can't happen in reality. If you have a geomagnetic storm powerful enough to wipe out all electronics and power heavy machinery through induction alone, everything is dead. If you have a geomagnetic storm that is survivable, then all of your analog devices would still work. Especially a flashlight that uses batteries--that's a chemical reaction.
  4. The fact that it requires a rope climb to get back disqualifies it as a base IMO. If you have a sprain, broken ribs, or are simply too tired to make the climb up you're screwed. That plus the lack of a work bench? Hard pass.
  5. I would advocate just adding a manual save feature. Similar to story mode except you don't get multiple slots, it just overwrites the one you're playing. Say you're on Interloper and are in the middle of Pleasant Valley. Life happens and you have to stop playing the game. You might not have the luxury of walking all the way to the nearest building to force a save, and on Interloper you can't just plop down in the middle of nowhere and take a 1-hour nap to force a save either. You either need to do something drastic like throw yourself off a short cliff to force a sprain, or leave your computer or console turned on while you leave. It'd be nice if we could just click save, shut down, and go take care of business.
  6. Actually the only contributing factor is whether it's indoors or outdoors. It spoils at the same rate whether it's in a container or out in the open.
  7. Oh yes, now that I hear it, it totally sounds familiar. It's not part of the soundtrack you can buy/download though, which is why I couldn't find it on the actual album when I was clicking through the tracks. Hmm that makes me wonder how many other unlisted tracks there are...
  8. Crossroads Elegy is the title of chapter 3 of the story actually. Where did you see that it's the name of a song?
  9. I don't think so, but I never actually made a point to look out for it specifically. If it was a youtube video or something, it's entirely possible the song had nothing to do with TLD, and was added after the game footage was captured. None of the in-game music is folk-like. The Lion's Roar both has guitars and is folk-like so that fits, but it's not played in the actual game anywhere. (And actually it isn't even the full song, it cuts out about 40% of the lyrics.)
  10. Well the Story Mode soundtrack by Cris Velasco is all piano and violin, no guitar. The only song in Story mode that I know uses acoustic guitar is The Lion's Roar by First Aid Kit which plays during the opening cinematic at the very beginning of the game. The Survivor mode soundtrack by Sascha Dikiciyan does have some acoustic guitar in it on a few of the songs though.
  11. That depends on how far away he is at the time. The first charge for me has different timing than the next two because I go into it with a full stamina bar. After winning the first struggle I backpedal away from him as he runs off. I want to put as much distance between us so I have more time to recover stamina. So in that case when he charges the second and third time, I'm farther away and have to set the spear while he's running towards me.
  12. Just throwing this out there but when exploring a new region, I take every opportunity I can to go through outdoor/indoor area transition because it triggers a save. Even if all I do is turn around and head right back outside. Then if I do find myself stuck on terrain, I'll spend maybe 5 seconds trying to get out, and if it doesn't happen I just accept the loss and reload my last save. Having to repeat 15 minutes of progress is less frustrating than losing a triple digit run.
  13. Same boat, but disagree. Both temperature and weights become second nature after a short time. Hinterland doesn't need to spend extra dev time to cater to us, when the whole rest of the world is already on the same page. Let's just internalize these measurement systems and catch up with everyone else.
  14. Well you clearly have good taste then! Now let your SOULLL GLOOOO
  15. I just noticed something today, several years after Desolation Point was introduced, but the hole in the Riken can't be from hitting a rock. The metal around the edges of the hull breach bend outwards. If it had hit a rock, they'd be bent inwards. What were they hauling?
  16. I don't really know how metal that is strapped to your shoes can be wet or frozen, but on the other hand NOT letting it freeze would provide 100% protection for a satchel or ear wrap worn on the inner accessory layer. My biggest problem is I keep calling the darn things crumpets. I've done it like 20 times now.
  17. "Look... me and the McDonald's people got this little misunderstanding. See, they're McDonald's... I'm McDowell's. They got the Golden Arches, mine is the Golden Arcs. They got the Big Mac, I got the Big Mick. We both got two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions, but their buns have sesame seeds. My buns have no seeds."
  18. I deliberately tested this--it only works to restore ruined firearms. Ruined tools of any other kind--hatchet, knife, their improvised counterparts, and the hacksaw--if they hit 0 they're done for. Think I'm gonna go update the wiki myself to clear that up.
  19. Took about 2 hours, 3 beers, and 40 curse words. That's trial and error for ya. Looking forward to trying it out tomorrow.
  20. Good call, having a mostly filled in map that doesn't auto-complete would be a way for the game to go "Psst...you missed something." Preferably in conjunction WITH overall map completion, and not in lieu of. Otherwise someone could just grab the vista and any named locations that weren't included, and boom. Probably be in and out in a day, and that's no fun. Mapping a whole region should still be an undertaking, something you plan on taking several days accomplishing, otherwise it loses that sense of satisfaction. Oh absolutely, this has been a major ask for a long time now. I think the spray paint was meant to kind of address that, and it does to an extent, but the fact that I can't mark down something on my map at night is a little silly. Let the player mark a building as searched on their own map, or draw an arrow or something. If they mark the wrong location or put the arrow in the wrong direction, hey that's on them. It'd be on me if I did that to my hand-drawn map.
  21. Any tool that's below 20% has a chance to break on your next use. Something like a hatchet you might be able to keep using a hatchet until it hits 1%, or it could break at 19%. It's all random. Unfortunately, your saw is gone, but you can at least harvest it for scrap to repair another saw if you find one. The milling machine will allow you to repair damaged equipment, but the only items it can bring back from a 0% "Ruined" status are the rifle and revolver. The Wiki should be taken with a grain of salt.
  22. Just to clarify one point, meat in bags decays at the same rate meat on the carcass does, and a carcass will completely despawn after exactly 4 days from the moment it hit the ground dead. So if you quarter it, make a point to harvest those bags ASAP. There are pros and cons to quartering vs. harvesting everything in the field. Generally speaking quartering is faster up front, but takes more time overall since you have more to transport, plus you have to spend more time harvesting meat from the quarters. It's extra wear on the tools too. I would really only quarter if I couldn't afford to be outside for very long. Like if it was too cold to be out for long and it was too windy to start a fire, I'd want to quarter it, grab what I can carry, and get to someplace warm. Come back for the rest later. I try to harvest everything in the field every time I can though. It's just more efficient. Another thing to consider is starting a campfire next to your kill, cutting off a couple steaks, and start cooking them while you work on harvesting more stuff from the carcass. The fire keeps the carcass thawed, and you save a bit of time by getting some of the cooking done early.
  23. To be fair if I need rabbit hides, I will absolutely set up a trap line. It's a video game, no rabbits are actually being harmed, so it just makes sense to have the materials I need magically appear while I'm out hunting something bigger. But yeah if I were in a real survival situation, I'd try to use a humane trap, then deliver as quick a kill as I can manage, out of sight of any of the other rabbits.
  24. @Derek0311 I think the intent behind highlighting all the times something has been suggested is being done for a different reason than you seem to think. As an example for years there were dozens, if not hundreds of requests between here and Steam to upgrade the backpack, or in some way increase carry capacity, but the limit was always 30kg. Then the moosehide satchel was introduced, and the extra 5kg helped but not much so the same thing kept coming up. So Well Fed was introduced...and still the requests kept coming. Now the Technical Backpack is a thing, and stacking with a satchel and Well Fed results in 50% more carry capacity than you start with. As the saying goes, the squeaky wheel gets the oil, and after a never-ending barrage of requests for more carry capacity...we got more carry capacity. The more common the ask, the more likely it will be added to the game. So pointing out that something has been asked many times in the past isn't so much saying anything like "you're unoriginal and shouldn't have posted", it's more like "a lot of other players are in agreement, here's what they had to say".
