  1. Yep even items left on the workbench itself and not on the ground around it can disappear. I actually didn't know it was still a problem until I read your post. Once I lost my first hammer I got in the habit of stowing tools away. Eh...or maybe Grey Mother found a way out of Milton and took your hammer.
  2. I have had items disappear below the terrain before, particularly around the workbench. The only things I will leave on the ground now are replaceable things like sticks and coal. Any tools I shove in a container. Between the locker, drawers, safe, etc. there's usually enough storage space. Anything I DO have to leave out in the open I place way up in the loft. I've never had anything go missing up there!
  3. Eh that would really only work if you could scoop the fish off the surface with a net or something. There's ice in the way, so unless you were lucky enough to have a fish float straight up into the hole you're at, all you'd do is waste a bomb and decimate the fish population.
  4. Excellent point, I hadn't considered that. This would make that challenge an actual challenge, requiring the player to probably craft waterskins in order to store the water in the first place. With 30 days it would by no means be impossible, especially if waterskins are crafted with rabbit hides which can be obtained on day zero with a handful of stones and skilled aim. As it stands I find Whiteout to be the easiest of all challenge modes, and while I know I'm certainly biased...I'm inclined to think I'm not wrong either!
  5. Stuff like that would be a prime candidate for paid DLC. And frankly I'd probably buy it just to support the team. I mean holy monkey I paid what, 15 bucks for this game 5 years ago and I have over 4000 hours of enjoyment. I'd absolutely buy any DLC sight unseen simply on principle.
  6. I'd prefer a balance myself. For instance, nix the magic water bottles that appear out of nowhere. If you don't already have water bottles in your inventory, you can't keep that water you just boiled. Either drink straight from the can/pot...or dump the water. And in return, make water bottles a super rare item on par with e-stims. But add a bow drill as a craftable firestarter, so we don't have to rely on matches or wait for sunny days. And add a waterskin as a craftable item. Basically you make the game harder in one aspect, but then add in a method to deal with the problem. Kinda like adding timberwolves and a revolver with which to shoot 'em in the face.
  7. You've answered your own question: It's a game. It inherently serves no "purpose" other than to provide enjoyment to the people that play it. And there is no one "correct" way to play this game either. This is evidenced by the fact that we have four stock experiences, and a Custom option to dial your own style. Adding cooking recipes would add enjoyment to players that choose to partake of that kind of thing. And players that don't want to....they don't have to. Just like the addition of charcoal way back when Faithful Cartographer first dropped. You aren't required to collect charcoal and draw maps, but it's something you can do if you wish. When paint cans were introduced, many long term players spurned them entirely because it didn't contribute anything to their play style. That's fine. I however chose to find a use for them. Could I mark searched buildings by placing a stick by the door? Absolutely. Now I can paint an orange X on the door instead. The point is, the more options we have, the better. Even if one particular player doesn't gain anything from it, the player base as a collective absolutely does.
  8. The two are not mutually exclusive.
  9. I would love recipes that require you to cook them, and eat them fresh. Like none of this "cook a moose and leave it in the snow for 3 weeks" nonsense. This would of course necessitate addition of more accessible renewable firestarting methods, like the oft-requested bow drill. Otherwise people like me would continue to hoard matches as if they were gold coins, waiting for sunny days to mag lens up a fire and grill that moose. I mean I audibly curse IRL when I have use a match.
  10. Eh I suppose that comes down to quantity. Buying one RCIR somewhere in the EU is probably going to be cheaper as a unit. But if you're buying quantity, buying US MRE's case A and B (24 units total) will probably be cheaper even with overseas shipping.
  11. The French RCIR (short for "Ration de Combat Individuelle Rechauffable") are absolutely higher quality, but maaaaan you will definitely pay extra buying those! Doesn't matter where you live, they're just objectively more expensive.
  12. Oh no offense was taken, but it WAS a facepalmey joke on the order of "Yo momma so stupid it took her two hours to watch 60 minutes!"
  13. My brain hurts lol But seriously though, US MRE's are probably the easiest to acquire and most affordable for what you get, and in general you really can't go wrong buying US military surplus. And I'm not saying that because I'm in the US or because I work for the defense department myself. It's genuinely good stuff. We wouldn't spend billions on total crap. It's not the best of the best, but definitely high quality and worth keeping a stash of.
  14. Oh like I said the modern ones are pretty decent. But if you want actually awesome MRE's, buy from the French. Those guys know good grub. The US stuff will keep you alive and be palatable, but French MRE's are delicious.
  15. "Veggie Omelet" which was....well... let's just say when you open the packet, it looked like someone else already ate it.
  16. Oh I've been doing the MRE thing for about a decade now. They don't have an indefinite shelf life, so as their expiration comes up I order a new set then eat the old ones. Some are better than others, but on the whole they aren't bad. I wouldn't want to forego fresh-cooked meals in favor of an MRE mind you, but they are definitely way better than they were 20 years ago. Vomelet...*shudder* I miss the mini tabasco bottles though...now it's just a foil packet of some generic hot sauce.
  17. I just got these on Amazon, still totally legal to buy military surplus! It has to do with when you buy them. MRE's are manufactured by private companies, who then sell the majority to the military. But they don't know how many the military will want, so they intentionally overproduce. The military buys what they need, then the companies sell the surplus off to whoever will buy it. It's illegal to take an MRE that the military bought and re-sell it, but perfectly legal to buy the surplus from the manufacturer. Which is where Amazon comes in.
  18. Today I realized, this game has turned me into something of a prepper. Not a doomsday prepper because who the heck wants to live past that? But an emergency prepper. Today I found out the water to the building is being shut off...while I was in the middle of washing my hands. And because this game has me thinking of worst case scenarios, I have 5 gallons of water sitting on a shelf in the closet, next to two cases of MRE's. Now 4 gallons, because I cracked one open to finish rinsing my hands.
  19. The storm lanterns don't match up with anything in reality. I've seen mantle lanterns that have a built-in ignition source, but the in-game lanterns clearly don't have a mantle. I've seen hurricane lanterns that have an open flame like the ones seen in the game, but they require a match or something to light. Edit: Also the lanterns in the game SOUND like a mantle lantern. But mantles are suspended at the top and emit a steady light. The one in the game has a flickering flame at the bottom like a traditional Dietz lamp. I've never seen a storm lantern with an open flame that contains a built-in striker. And believe me, I've looked.
  20. There's a jerry can in the snow in Thomson's Crossing too. Cross the bridge to the eastern half of town, check the snow in front of the house south of the road, with the truck and all the junk in the front yard. Never compared how much lamp oil it holds from one game to another, but my most recent run it had like 3.6L of oil in it. Or yeah, Joplin's Bunker Raid is a great way to get lamp oil.
  21. I was replaying Wintermute on Hardened Survivor, and while it remained Hardened Survivor when I progressed to episode 2, suddenly Episode 3 is Capable Survivor. Anyone else have this happen to them? I haven't progressed too far so I have no problem starting Episode 3 over, but it seems a little odd that the game's difficulty changed on me. I don't know if this has always been like that or what.
  22. Make it DLC. I'd pay 5 bucks to make sausage, sure. I mean long-term endgame scenarios, the more stuff we have tt do, the better. Who cares if it's unnecessary if it's fun? Collect seawater and intentionally boil it dry to gather salt. Crafting recipe at the meat grinder, 1kg meat, 1 fresh gut, and a salt pile = 1kg cured sausage. Doesn't have to be hyper-realistic, I mean we can craft bullets without primers after all. Just require the player to jump through a few hoops that are at least marginally sensible.
  23. I'm pretty sure there's some sort of significance to the Omega symbol on his shirt. Like alpha and omega, beginning and end. And Methuselah is here to witness "the passing of an age". Back when Milton Mailbags were a thing I asked if there was anything Raph could reveal about the symbol and he straight up said he couldn't reveal anything. Maybe I'm reading too much into that, but to me I took that as "yes there is something but I can't spoil it."
  24. @Admin Can we please get this locked? This is going nowhere positive.
