i only got mauled 1 time at the cabin,

shoot when hes farther away.  use the terrain and your brain

I don't know if it's worth the trouble. After the first mauling I noticed you basically take no damage, so decided just to steamroll through it and get mauled as necessary.

you may have a point there, but that bastard wrecked my wool headwrap.

plus i enjoy creeping around trying to be as quiet as possible while hunting.  it would have been harder if the game didnt auto save when you were at the next encounter though,  it lets you know when to start being careful.

to others that have problems, look for the bear untill it autosaves, then stop.  crouch and if you see him great, but if not look for favorable terrain and proceed there.

and u can use rocks to draw him to where you want him.  its so easy this game.   stones are overpowered in this game.  best hunting tool hands down.

I've shot the bear 29 times, at a wide variety of ranges and all over his body. Never missed. Each and every time he mauled me anyway. Honestly really close to giving up the game, this is frustrating beyond all mortal comprehension

You should only have to shoot him once to get him to run on to the next area.  If I recall from the campaign, there 6 places where you need to do this.  Like others, I would use the terrain so I wouldn't get mauled.

I killed the bear the other day and now I am continuing. It took me like 7 tries from reloading a save I made right at the door. The problem I had was that I came with no band aids and I had no idea that it was gonna start the mission and that I was gonna need at least 3 or 4 O.o. So every time I reloaded the save I had to rip up some clothes and make band aids (which worked for me). I have to admit, I didn't expect the bear to be right outside the door O.o. But I like to be caught off guard - it makes for a memorable experience in gaming, in my experience.  My very last try (the successful try) was my best. As soon as I got outside and the bear stood up, I shot him in the throat and he ran away without attacking me (unlike the last 6 tries). I tracked his blood and shot him again at the bottom of the hill twice (this time he attacked me), I track his blood further, got one shot in when I found him (he attacked me), from here on I track his blood and every time he came at me, he would flee after I get one shot on him. Finally when last shot killed him, I let out a sigh of relief. It was very fulfilling when I killed him, that is what I love about this game. (you know I took ALL the meat and cooked it B|) luckily I was by the trailers in the logging area. It took multiple trips to the bear. I got the hide and all of the guts too. I play with a sort of a no-waste policy. That is just my play-style.
So my tip is try to shoot him in the throat on the first shot (it helps a lot as it gives you a good start). AND BRING MANY BAND AIDS and anti septic. I DID consider to try using the flare gun on him, but I never did. I just used the rifle the whole time.
He destroyed my wool hat on every play-through so far.

(I hope this doesn't spoil anything for people stuck on this part. I will edit out anything upon request of coarse.)

Its possible to only get mauled the first time.  Just choose the rest of your shots wisely.  It isn't any different than bears in sandbox.  There are times and places you can shoot the bear that it doesn't know you are there, and will just flee upon being shot.  The whole shooting it six times and doing it in endless fog was the most asinine part of story mode.  Short of the fact that so little of it was voiced.  I would play story mode again, but I'll pass on the killing the bear part.  Its hard to believe that was the best idea they came up with for hunting down a bear and killing it.

On my final play thru i didnt get mauled at all...went out the cabin door (crouched for better accuracy) and shot the bear in the face with the rifle then right back thru the door, equipped flare gun, then back out and shot the bear in the face with the flare gun and it ran off.   followed it and shot with the rifle from a distance and again with the flare gun as it charged and each time it then ran off.  killed it on the 5th encounter with the flare gun shot.  dunno if there's cumulative damage or a critical hit spot but i think only two of my rifle shots were to the head but all five flare shots were head shots....final shot the flare was in his forehead.

I've became quite the specialist in blasting wolves with the flare gun, I think this weird training helped. First time I exited Jerry's hut I was like "Oh crappity crap", turned tail and hid inside before Old Fluffy could get me. Then I exited the hut flare gun in hand and shot the bear. From what I've observed, the flare gun is scarier than the rifle. Even if for some reason you miss at short range the flare will scare away everything. So, as ridiculous at it sounds, I almost killed the bear by letting it near, shooting it with a flare as he was almost upon me, chasing it and repeating the process. When the bear encounter counter signalled it was the final duel I decided to use the rifle for dignity's sake, probably a long range shot and the final one as Old Fluffy was charging. And I took no mauling.

Fluffy has indeed been moved. Well, in Wintermute you can find Fluffy's body in the dam, but there's another Fluffy. I know where she is (she didn't manage to kill me the two times I've met her, but the first time was a real startle, let me tell ya), but I'm not going to tell you so it won't ruin the surprise.

:D

Flare gun at short range will automatically scare off the bear, and if it runs away shining like a comet you'll know the shot was a success. I don't remember precisely, but I think the magic supply boxes will probably appear only when you use the rifle, replacing the shots (with some extra first aid stuff) you used so the game won't doom you to fail if you sneeze while aiming. The fleeing bear will run right next to them.

Fun fact about the mauling animation: when I met the first bear I met in the Destroyed Railroad as I climbed down from the cabin I fought it a dozen times or so (reloading on and on) because my kids weren't there to see it and they love watching me playing, so I tried different ways. Sometimes it died with two shots. Sometimes it tanked enough to kill a kaiju. Once I dropped some meat and guts and hid behind a rock, it went to sniff the "bait" and for some reason got startled and fled whimpering. Once I managed to hide in the hunter's blind by the river and it kept running around, it angrily cursing my ancestors as I kept shooting it. And here's the fun part: once I shot it from a distance, it charged and I managed to reload and shoot again as it was too close. The second shot actually killed it, so the mauling animation started but without damage to Will or his stuff, and at the end of the animation the bear was dead. Sadly it's probably a once-in-a-million event, recording the clip of Will killing a bear with his hands would have been more than awesome.

I agree that the flare gun is way better than the rifle for self defense, it's easier to aim at a charging wolf or bear with it, but I've never gotten even remotely close enough to a deer to use it, apart some occasions when a running deer almost trampled me but it took me by surprise, and I was staring like a cow looking at the train instead of grabbing the gun.

Sorry about calling Old Bear "Fluffy", I didn't know the name was taken.:D
