I speculated in another thread about the unusual dead-end ravine at Broken Bridge. There is a rope down. Human body(s) are also found there. All HL would have to do is add a rope up from the ravine at the bridge.
You can crank up the custom settings to make the weather pretty unforgivable. That, combined with other settings, should give you the challenge you want.
If they are still there with the loot refresh! Likely they are since they're unique but you never know. I would actually like it HL mixed everything up. Make it more like a new game.
I think I'm going for a hybrid of #1 & 3. I'm not heading to the airfield naked, but I'm also not going to get top-notch gear before heading there. My excitement will push me towards the airfield. Once I fully explore it, I will then return to the vanilla zones and begin re-exploring them while I wait for other new zones to be released.
Yeah, as @Leeanda said, animals can "reset" sometimes when you transition to an interior location. This has been around for quite some time (always? can't remember a time when this didn't happen).
Best bet, if you cause an animal to bleed, pass time/sleep outdoors for a couple hours then go look/listen for crows. A non-transition cave works really well for this waiting.
I'm doing B. Seems like kind of a waste of my time to start a game and have to throw it away. I've been playing other games (Days Gone currently) to fill in.
Oh, that reminds me, I need to load the game and ensure I have all the event badges. I seem to vaguely recall I missed one of the 4DON events. @mfuegemann put together some great documentation on how to re-play these.
I would be interested in just how much usage the Time Capsule gets. @Admin, are those stats available somewhere? Personally, I've spent a couple hours total in there.
I can certainly respect other's viewpoints and decisions. I also enjoy being able to openly share our thoughts on this forum.
To respond to the issue of hard-drive space - the save files are incredibly small compared to the game files, so unless you are playing on a Commodore64, you shouldn't have to worry about TLD save files using up your HDD space.
Perhaps the root will be found in some sort sheltered area, where the ground isn't as frozen?
"It occurs along roadsides and ditch banks, and in pastures and waste areas. The plant generally prefers moist, nitrogen-rich soils, but will grow in a variety of soils."
Or, maybe we won't dig up the root at all, but instead find it preserved/dried in some way.
