  1. I've been looking for a wall large enough for "Donald Trump - off you fu*k" but not found one yet.
  2. Even without a complete overhaul, the current system could be improved considerably - e.g. if a 'searched' or 'storage' icon can appear on your map when you've marked a building, why can't directional arrows similarly appear when you've marked a way point on a tree or rock?
  3. I've read that it's possible to increase the time between wolf re-spawns by not harvesting the whole carcass - and that has been my experience since using that tactic in my game. But this implies that a wolf won't re-spawn until it has fully decomposed. Only I have just killed the wolf in Crystal Lake that spawns across from the Mountaineer's Hut, when the corpse of his brother that I killed a day or so back is still lying down by the jetty (3.3 kg of meat, hide and guts still on that corpse - I've not harvested this wolf at all on the assumption that the less I harvest, the longer it will take to decompose and re-spawn). If I'm right and it is the 'same' wolf, is this a bug?
  4. Turns out this was wrong. That damn bear can teleport through a closed door......🤕
  5. This has probably been done a number of times, but anyway..... About me I've been playing about 9 months and I'm still pretty rubbish. I died a lot in Voyageur (longest run ever about 80 days) so moved to custom - essentially removing sprains, increasing wildlife re-spawn times and increasing item availability and I've done a lot better. And surviving longer has, I think, also allowed me more opportunity to understand some of the game mechanics. As I happened to be in Timberwolf Mountain in my custom game when Ash Canyon was released, this prompted me to start a new Voyageur run with a Timberwolf Mountain start - and with the idea of getting myself situated and then running over to Ash Canyon to pick up the backpack and crampons...... The Idea I've started the game - I'm 9 days in. Some things have gone better than might be expected, others a lot worse. I'm now at a point where I'm in a real dilemma about my next moves - and that made me think, "Why not ask the forum members what to do? And why not make a thing of it?". So that's the idea - I'll post updates, screenshots, progress etc. and at any point where there's a significant decision to be made, forum members will tell me what choice to make - and assuming that isn't just "throw yourself off the top of Timberwolf Mountain" it will be a case of majority rule. 🤣 I'm not going to bother you with trivial stuff, like deciding whether to repair a particular piece of clothing, only the big stuff. Equally, I'd like some actual reasoning offered for the options people are going for - don't just tell me to do X as opposed to Y, tell me why that choice is the best..... The Scenario This post is already long, so I'll provide more detail if there's sufficient interest in making a thing of this. But for now..... I (that's my character Sophie Bourbon - kudos to anyone who gets that reference without having to look it up!) got lucky with my starting location and managed to make it to the summit on day 1. Got some nice kit, though the clothing needed repair and by the time I got down off the summit I was so exhausted and so close to dying of hypothermia that I couldn't carry any spare clothing to harvest for cloth to repair the decent stuff. In fact, I was in the red zone as I started to make my way across Crystal Lake to the Mountaineers Hut. It was actually fortunate that at this point a wolf started coming for me - otherwise I might not have had the sense to use an emergency stim to get to the Mountaineers Hut in time (it's not without good reason this story is named "An Idiot Abroad" 😉). A couple of days back, I went over to the Wing Section east of Crystal Lake and found enough clothing in the crates that I could harvest for repairs. Yesterday, exploring round the back of the hut, I found a moose. His hide is curing now and I've got plenty of food. But apart from a poor condition MRE and a couple of granola bars, that's about it. I've got a rifle, but only 2 rounds left. I've got 40 rounds of revolver ammo, but no revolver (I'm hoping it's somewhere in one of the unopened crates on the way up to the summit). But the biggest two issues are; - I've only got cans to cook with - this and my low level cooking skills and only the fireplace to cook on means I'm finding it difficult to find the time to build up any reserve of food and water for another journey to the summit (and I've never found any cooking pots up there anyway).... - I've not got a bed roll - there might be one on the way up to the summit, but there might not.... I really want to take another crack at the summit, but I fear it may be beyond me at this stage. A move to Ash Canyon would certainly be suicide. I could 'retreat' to Pleasant Valley - but that's not strictly speaking a retreat, given that I've not yet visited on this run. And with only 2 rounds of rifle ammo and no pry bar, that idea is only a little less daunting than trying another run to the summit of TWM.
  6. Not made it to Ash Canyon yet - too much going on with my current run. But...... .....have the devs yet given any indication as to whether the crampons are actually intended to be something which cannot be repaired? -i.e. are they actually WAD? Knowing that might help the discussion a little. I've looked in the news and updates section but can't see anything on the subject. And not having acquired the crampons yet, I think it might be a little previous for me to be the one asking the question.
  7. Agreed. But I agree even more with @Kranium - the current map system is next to useless for actual navigation. The single biggest improvements I can think of to the game would be a properly contoured map and the ability for players to make their own annotations to the map.
  8. And sometimes you just get lucky.... Second day of a new run I've just started in TWM and I'm trying to back away from a wolf that has me in his sights. I'm needing to back away as my only chance is putting a deer between us - so I don't see the bear until I literally bump into him. Why the hell he ran off in fright I've no idea - but he also scared Mr Wolf out of his skin. 🤣
  9. Not sure if this is still an issue for you, but...... ......the ability to place something is affected not just by whether what you are trying to place it on is flat - but also how far away you are from where you are trying to place that thing. So, it might be possible to place a bedroll or a fire when you are within (say) 1-2 metres of where you are trying to place it - but try to place the same object in the exact same place when you are 15-20 metres away and it can't be done.
  10. Speaking as someone who has had a fair few maulings and was, at least until recently, terrified of bear encounters, I'd say the following; if you actually want to hunt the bear, then try to pick the fight yourself - i.e. on your own terms. if the objective is to harvest the bear (and why wouldn't you?) then @ManicManiac's advice about luring the bear is on the money. For this, ideally you want clear sight of the bear and the bear to have clear sight of you. If you're just within scent range it will follow you endlessly without charging if you don't shoot at it. I reckon a safe distance is approximately 70 - 80 real life yards. But just experiment - get it to follow you, keep backing away and if you increase the distance too much you will know because it will stop following. Just shorten the distance and it will start again. this method doesn't just have the benefit of bringing the bear close to home so harvesting is easier, you can also use it to bring the bear to where the odds are stacked in your favour - my favourites are the porch in Pleasant Valley Farmstead where a bear will spawn in close proximity anyway (or you can lure it all the way over from PV Outbuildings) luring across the lake in Broken Rairoad and into the Maintenance Yard and from inside the Poacher's Camp or Old Spence Farmstead in Forlorn Muskeg. Those three locations give you the benefit of being able to shoot from inside so the bear cannot jump you - or from very close to inside, so you've got enough time to get inside in time to avoid being jumped. of those three, Pleasant Valley Farmstead is probably my favourite because it's relatively easy to track the bear if he bolts with minimal chance of getting jumped by a wolf whilst you're doing the tracking - which isn't to say there isn't any chance of that, but in good weather you should be able to see any wolves from some distance. Broken Railroad and Forlorn Muskeg can be a problem if you haven't cleared out the wolves in the vicinity before hunting the bear. for locations, the Climber's Hut in Timberwolf Mountain and Quonset Garage in Coastal Highway or also worth a mention. The Climber's Hut is good as it's very easy to track the bear if he runs - just remember the bear can get inside the hut and maul you if you don't shut the door, so lure the bear close to the hut, go and open the door and leave it open, then stand right next to the door and only then shoot the bear - you will not have time to shoot the bear, open the door, get inside and shut the door if he charges (found out the hard way 🤣). Quonset is great, plenty of cars to duck into (make sure you're stood right next to the door when you shoot) but it can be a bit of a pain tracking the bear if he bolts - and the number of wolves in the area makes it very likely you will become the hunted. use your stats tracker - 'rifle shots taken' and 'wildlife rifle hits' will let you know whether your shot actually hit - something which isn't always obvious whilst the bear is still on his feet (I'm thinking in particular of when you're ducking in and out of cars around Quonset). The same with the bow and arrow. the bear is a particularly good choice for practicing your archery skills on lower levels - no great mystery to this, he's just a bigger target and so easier to hit. Good luck! (first time I shot the bear next to Quonset, he bolted off up the hill and I tracked him. Found him collapsed some distance away but as I approached I realised he was still breathing. Decided I'd put him out of his misery with a revolver shot to the head, but it only woke him up!! - he danced a jig around me a couple of times then bolted off up the hill again. I nearly fell out of my chair. 🤣🤣)
  11. You can't take them off? They degrade even at rest/in your sleep? Or have I misunderstood?
  12. Bears are far worse. With rabbits it's one quick snap and they're off to that big Watership Down in the sky. With bears, however, those groans of pain, tinged with dumb confusion at the dying of the light can go on for a very long time......
  13. You've not broken them already? 🤣
  14. Out of interest, exactly how much extra does the backpack allow you to carry? And can you use it in addition to the moose hide satchel, or is it either/or?
  15. @TiffTastic - I think this is a design feature, at least in some locations - the porch of Pleasant Valley Farmhouse, the annex to the Maintenance Shed in Broken Railroad and Old Spence Homestead and the Poachers Camp in Muskeg are all designed to operate this way. And I think to an extent that is to compensate for the number of predators in the surrounding area. Didn't know about the Pleasant Valley sheds though - I've been luring my bears all the way back to the Farmhouse before killing them (which I'll probably continue to do - saves lugging the meat about 🤣).
  16. Did you know: You can use the light thrown by the sparks of a storm lantern when you ignite it to either get your bearings or light your way? - i.e. just use the process of igniting rather than the lantern itself and deliberately stop short of igniting. You can do this indefinitely without using any lantern fuel. Useful for getting your bearings in places with a lot of obstacles (e.g. say you were cooking in BR maintenance shed after dark and want to get back to the one of the beds) or even finding your way in tunnels if you have the time and patience.
  17. I'd say that's an unfortunate shift in the use of the word 'discriminate' - i.e using it twice as if it has the same meaning in both cases. It clearly doesn't here; in the first instance it's being used in the sense of 'to treat unfairly' and in the second, it's being used in the sense of 'to make a choice'. And whilst I don't disagree that the game is Hinterland's 'property' that argument has its limits - it's a property, or commodity, that it is trying to sell to gamers (or more accurately, the use of which it is trying to sell to gamers). Its success in doing that, will, to a not insignificant extent, be influenced by the number of first person recommendations it gets (e.g. I know of at least three friends who have bought the game on my recommendation). Moreover, what is also missing from your argument is a recognition of what Hinterland sold and we bought - an unfinished game. That isn't a criticism of Hinterland - they were open about that fact. But that means that not only were those who bought the game taking a bit of a punt (i.e. on the game ever being finished) but also argue that it is more reasonable than it otherwise would be for those who have bought the game to (politely and respectfully) tell Hinterland when they think they've got it wrong. And whilst I recognise that I could be mistaken here, I assume that continued sales has some bearing on whether the game does get finished? If that's not true any longer (i.e. because Hinterland have already made enough money to finish the game) then I am pretty sure it must have been true at some stage?
  18. With respect, if someone writes "97.5%" or "69.3%" they are making a very specific claim - and if the facts don't tally with that claim, or if they haven't conducted any polling, they are indeed, "making up stats". But when someone writes " 9999 out of 10,000" this is clearly interchangeable with writing something like "99.9999999%". No-one but a pedant would understand that to be a factual claim - it's simply another way of saying "the overwhelming majority". And given the views expressed in this thread and others, even the dogs in the street know the views of the overwhelming majority of the game's customers on this issue.
  19. .....that I heard a wolf prowling around camp. But when I woke, I knew it was just a dream because I'd only just killed the one that had been hanging around. 🤣 New video.mp4
  20. @MartinSand92 - my testing isn't extensive. But if I'm right and it wasn't just a glitch in my game, I suspect it's because it wasn't intended that you'd be at ground level in the Cannery without having first disposed of the timber wolves. I think you're supposed to access the area via the high wire route and - if you decide to dispose of the wolves - do it from that elevated position. And it was also the case that they weren't able to enter those specific rooms where you can shut yourself in and are supposed to find some safety. But the outbuildings, which have permanently open sides and doors, they certainly were able to come straight through the walls (not that it mattered on Pilgrim, of course, it just looked very odd).
  21. You could speed up defrosting time during an aurora by sticking it in the microwave. 😉
  22. Out of curiosity, I recently tried to see what would happen with the timber wolves in the Last Resort Cannery on Pilgrim mode - they can certainly run through walls.
  23. Yes - definitely a problem. I tend to disagree in as much as I think there is an issue with single items - the cursor tends to highlight when it is off to one side of the item rather than directly over it. But at least it does highlight reliably. Hovering over a stack of items (sticks, reclaimed wood, books etc*) and the cursor hardly ever highlights where it ought to - you have to move it off to one side and it's quite random whether it will highlight. Which in turn is quite frustrating because it can be quite time consuming - and time is a very real resource in the game. (* sticks, reclaimed wood and books are the things I am sure most often get dumped in a pile on the ground - but I suspect it is "dumped in a pile on the ground" which is the key factor here, not the specific items).
