  1. I did report it last night, but if you're getting it as well by all means feel free to enter your own report. As the old proverb goes, "the squeaky wheel gets the oil."
  2. I think the game has enough guns to be honest. Leave it to The Long Dark to make a 6-shot revolver feel like a friggen Doom BFG. We've got our rapid-shooter, and our heavy-hitter. I'm good with that. I'd prefer to see some alternative weapons, like the bear spray for one. A crossbow for two...preferably the crossbow if I'm honest (hip-fire arrows!) but this thread is about bear spray, so... Bear spray.
  3. After having spent about two months straight in Milton, collecting all 13 buffer memories, I have to say I've now developed a particular fondness for the Paradise Meadows farmstead. I have to move on to collect memories elsewhere, but I kinda don't want to leave. The region itself lacks extreme long-term viability, on account of lack of beachcombing or fishing. But in terms of places I simply enjoy staying at, I gotta admit, I love that house. It's the kind of place I'd literally consider buying and living in, for real. I mean...in a real world setting. Not one where the house is falling apart and there are murderous wolves everywhere. Just imagine the Paradise Meadows farmhouse, but in a market-ready condition.
  4. Fun story about bear spray. (I wasn't here for this, this is all third party storytelling.) Back in '95 my friend and his family went on a vacation to Alaska. They were each given some basic stuff on a hiking trip. The important part is they each had a can of bear spray. Well I'll just cut right to the chase. My friend's brother thought the bear spray worked like mosquito spray, and the moment they had set up camp, sprayed himself all over with it. I guess nobody bothered to explain what bear spray was to him. Yeah. That first day was a bit rough for him.
  5. I'm getting conflicting information. Some reports are saying whaling stopped in the 60's, others say it continues to this day. I don't really want to make a full research project over it so I'm just going to concede the point with this: It's a video game. Sure. Whaling exists. lol
  6. Not gonna bother fact checking it because it'd be unfalsifiable anyway--we can't rule out whale poachers in an old beaten up steam ship. You get some earthquakes rocking Great Bear, which create some wicked nasty waves, causing the Riken to be pulled inland and beached on a crag. It could happen. That said, it does seem to be a glaring plot hole that official Canadian whaling ended in the 60's, and yet well into the at least 90's the plant was operational. With 90's-modern computers. And still having whale bones all over the place. You'd think either the entire facility would be decommissioned, which would explain the whale bones. Or the facility would be repurposed, in which case someone would clean out the old bones and bring modern equipment in. The fact that we have semi-modern computers PLUS whale bones .... My money is on plot hole.
  7. And computers with emails still in the memory buffer.
  8. Was there like a ground-below-the-ground or something that you impacted? Because I've fallen through the map on CH before and I just end up teleported to the Ravine transition after falling for maybe 5 seconds into the undersky.
  9. If bear spray becomes a thing, I hope wind speed and direction affects it. Spray it into a strong headwind, it blows back in your face and you suffer the effects.
  10. So I stopped and took the time to check out the gravestones outside the church, and I noticed that all of the named graves were for people who had died very young. The oldest was just 25, two were 17, and Lily was just 16. Is there some plot significance to the fact that all the graves are of people who died young?
  11. I would say the only time you should be at risk of a sprain in ski boots is if you suffer a literal fall (Edit: Or get thrashed by wildlife). Not walking-on-a-slope kind of fall, I'm talking an actual fall where you suffer clothing damage, which would explain why that hard fixed ski boot ankle joint didn't protect you.
  12. Caves in the Muskeg itself.
  13. This. Have your hand gear affect your wrist sprain chance, and foot gear affect ankle sprains. The heavier the item, the less chance of a sprain. And those 4kg ski boots, have those make you straight up immune to ankle sprains. That would make them worth wearing.
  14. I've never fired a rifle to the point of failure but it would be interesting if squib loads were a thing. Imagine that...you get a muffled misfire, your target is not struck. You clear the cartridge and if you don't clean it, the next time you pull the trigger the rifle violently explodes in your face dealing both a burn and a bleeding wound, and leaving nothing behind to salvage for parts.
  15. I've walked over lit torches before no problem (I wanted to see if I'd get burnt). Was it at night or nearly so? I'm wondering if you were standing too close to some wires, an aurora started up while you were in accelerated time, and those live wires are what got you. Unless maybe lit torches DO burn you now...I don't really want to find out.
  16. I kind of feel bad saying this because it's such a great addition already but I wish it were a little quicker to respond. The revolver comes up on the screen fast, but then there's a delay of about a second before you can actually pull the trigger. I'd really love to be able to Indiana Jones that mother. Just drawBANGholster in one smooth motion.
  17. I'm absolutely loving the revolver. Ammo is plentiful enough that I don't feel like I have to ration it, so I can actually USE this thing. That said, I don't shoot everything that moves. I still opt for evasion/distraction, and only shoot wolves that end up in my back yard, to get a few days of peace.
  18. Yeah I think a lot of people are a little confused by that behavior. I saw a question in the mailbag section asking if HL had any plans to do something with the abandoned lost cairns. It'll be interesting to see what the response to that is, if one comes.

    Aurora

I think the game rolls the dice every couple seconds or something, since sometimes it takes longer than others. It's probably similar to throwing a torch or stone or something. Sometimes the wolf ignores it, sometimes they are scared off immediately.
  20. Happened to me a couple times on PC as well. Then mysteriously the model would be back after a while, only to disappear again. And the hidden cairns are a reward for certain kickstarter backers. They could get a line of text or something added to the game in exchange for supporting the kickstarter, and the ones "It's story is not yet written" are apparently from backers that never actually sent in the message they want included.

    Aurora

The flashlight is useful to search buildings for loot without using lamp oil or lighting a torch. Also, the aurora lights up interior locations, so you can craft or break things down without a separate light source. The radios become operable, if you want to listen to music. And if I'm just going from one place to another, such as moving to a new region to stay for a few months, I prefer to travel during an aurora. The flashlight on high power repels wolves. Also, don't forget the collectible buffer memories. You can only acquire those during an aurora.
