  1. The old World of Darkness game system (Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Vampire: The Masquerade....any of the Something: The Activity games) would lend itself quite well to The Long Dark, if you strip out all of the supernatural elements and instead play strictly as a human. And it would be BRUTAL considering that you only have 7 health levels, and you cannot soak lethal damage unless wearing armor. So one wolf attack on an average unarmed, unprotected human pretty much would be fatal. And even if you survive it, recovering from Lethal damage can take several in-game months, depending on how badly you're injured. In fact you'd probably have to fudge the health and healing system a bit just to make it playable. Like allow you to recover a full health level every night as long as you treat the injury. Minimum of two people would be required: The Storyteller, and the Player. Although you could easily add additional players, or have someone else handy to take on the role of hostile wildlife. It would also open up the possibility of interactions not possible in the game, such as a wolf pack attacking all at once, instead of Bond Villain style. Or pack of wolves vs. Moose. Or you hide in the car, and the bear decides it's going to crack the shell to get at the nut inside, instead of immediately give up.

    More Pain!

Ehh I don't know that it's OP, because it's not like you're getting free energy. You're just getting a loan. Once the effects wear off, your original fatigue level returns, minus whatever you had spent while under the effects. Since I use it to squeeze in an extra rope climb or two, when it wears off, I typically drop directly to Exhausted. IMO that's balanced.
  3. In my opinion the best way to implement well being would be to take into account how frequently you suffer afflictions or suffer condition loss. A combination of cabin fever, and well fed. Similar to CF, if over the past 6 days, you've spent most of the time with condition loss or an affliction, your character's attitude becomes negative, and condition recovers 50% slower. If you make it 3 days without suffering condition loss or a negative affliction, your character's attitude becomes positive, and condition recovers 50% faster. Suffering an affliction or condition loss ends your positive attitude, but doesn't immediately make it negative. You just return to baseline. So there becomes an incentive to take care of your survivor, but the game is still playable if you choose to ignore it.
  4. Shower thought here. What are some of your favorite non-critical, non-essential elements of games you've played in the past? Can be TLD, or anything really. For me the thing that inspired this question was thinking about an old PS2 game RTX Red Rock. The game itself was rushed to production resulting in a buggy, borderline unplayable mess, but one part really stood out as awesome. The background music was composed of two tracks: the percussion, and synthesizer. When not in combat, the syntheser track would play constantly, giving it a kind of unsettling, desolate atmosphere (which is appropriate since it takes place on a ruined mars base). But when you started moving, the percussion track would also play, making it really feel like the music was perfectly in tune with your actions. The end result was that it came off less as background music, and more like a movie soundtrack that was perfectly paced with whatever was going on.
  5. The store bought stuff ain't bad either! Although I think we can officially put to rest anyone's wish list item that said "Can we combine coffee and tea into one super drink?" Because no... No.. Just no. I tried combining coffee, rose hip, reishi, and birch bark tea in one cup in the name of science, and it's just nasty. I feel like I've gained an affliction "Stupid: You are stupid" for attempting it.
  6. I could see that happening. Those areas look straightforward to us as players, but there's plenty of uneven terrain and obstacles in those areas that can affect pathing. I wouldn't call that normal behavior, but I wouldn't call it a bug either. It's more reliable in wide open areas, like the ice in CH, the muskeg, the fields in PV, etc.
  7. It's implied that your character is doing extra things off camera, based on their skill. It's kind of like giving instructions to someone. "Hey, go start a fire. Here's matches and a cedar log." Then they go off and handle the minutiae of gathering stones and kindling, building the ring, stacking the fuel, feathering tinder on the spot if they are level 3 or above, etc. Fire is part of the game, but it's not intended to be a campfire simulator.

    More Pain!

Interestingly enough I'm the exact opposite. When painkillers were an instant sprain cure, I'd keep some handy on me, then just deal with the sprains as they occur. I'd only take the meds if I found myself needing to be able to use my hands or feet, such as immediately before sprinting over weak ice, or immediately after hearing a wolf bark at me. Now that pain doesn't really DO anything and the only thing that heals a sprain is rest or a bandage, I've been using painkillers pretty liberally. I also think it's funny that you can't treat a headache with painkillers.
  9. So...I know this is going to only apply to a very small subset of players, but I'm going to throw this out there anyway. I have a Logitech G510s gaming keyboard, and one of its features is that it has a small LCD screen on it. A few of the games I've played in the past take advantage of that, and stats are shown on the LCD screen. Neverwinter Nights 2 for instance, would show your HP , EXP, level, etc. I don't know how much of a problem an ask like this is, but I would love it if the LCD screen on this keyboard would display statistics from the TLD. For example, displaying current calorie store, temperature information, time of day, etc.
  10. If you're talking about the Logitech G510s, that's the one I'm using lol. I have never found a practical use for the G keys...although the fact that the keyboard is backlit is pretty awesome. I like to play in the dark, and being able to see the keys in the dark is pretty solid. And the screen on the keyboard...I really feel like that's something I wish more game developers would take into consideration. Actually...wish list, here I come...
  11. I figured it out When you RMB items, its weight is now added to your own. Prior to that, it was advantageous to carry a heavy object around by RMBing it, instead of picking it up, because that essentially allows you to carry it for free.
  12. There's different intensities of fear. If you strike terror into them, such as a surprise attack and a non-fatal hit with a weapon that causes bleeding, they will take off running for a minimum of about 10 seconds (I haven't timed it, that's an estimate), but that can persist for well beyond the 10 seconds as long as the wolf can see you. Essentially, if you sneak up and inflict a bleeding wound without the wolf seeing you, if you then stand up and stay within line of sight, the wolf will continue to run around in a blind panic. This also occurs if you win a wolf struggle, regardless of how you win. If the wolf first sees you, a hip-fire that inflicts damage but doesn't kill actually causes the wolf to charge you, same as if you'd aimed your weapon. Depending on distance and personal skill, it's possible to put 2 or 3 more rounds into a charging wolf before it gets to you. These additional shots, regardless of whether you hit or miss, will not inspire fear in a charging wolf. A startle is something like a surprise attack that misses and hits the snow near them, or scaring them with a rock/flare/torch. That will cause them to run away briefly, but only for like 3-5 seconds. If you are not out of sight or crouched by the time they recover from being startled, they will be right back on your tail. Regardless of whether it's mortal terror or just a startle, they will attempt to run away from you immediately. If they are near any obstacle, then they turn in a random direction. Which can cause them to basically bounce off a tree and head right back in your direction, or even come running directly at you if they were up against a wall to begin with. They won't just run around the tree and keep going more or less in the same direction, they always bounce around like a billiard ball any time they encounter an obstacle. Once the fear ends, they try to resume their normal pathing.
  13. I have nothing whatsoever to back this up, but I'm betting Part 3 is going to be something along the lines of "The Bearkiller Rifle was destroyed, but you survived the attack. The bear is now sleeping. You must sneak away, and your only hope now is to reforge Spence's old bear spear." Basically the final chapter of Episode 2, except you are playing as Jeremiah in a world where Will never showed up.
  14. How did you get them in your inventory? LMB does nothing for me, I can only reposition with RMB.
  15. They don't come with tiny bottles anymore I'm afraid Most of them don't include hot sauce, and the ones that do have a little foil packet of Bulliards of Louisiana. Not the authentic, real Tabasco.
  16. It's in the accessory pack of every MRE
  17. Get the struggle meter about 3/4 full, and the "Take Shot" option appears for RMB. Or you can keep banging on the pooch with the butt of your gun until the meter is maxed, and win the struggle that way. Like if you don't want to use ammo. Although frankly that seems a little unrealistic if you ask me. I wouldn't lead in with hammering it in the noodle for a while, then shoot. I'd lead off with shooting, and bang on it if I ran out of ammo.
  18. Actually I have a new one that just developed on my recent save. Since I'm hunting all the buffer memories, and am well situated in every region, I've taken to breaking down everything I can find instead of idly passing time. Took me about a week to saw up everything in Hibernia. Carter's not looking much better either.
  19. I think the overall system of raw / cooked / burnt is fine. However, I would like to see some sort of recipes added to the game, that confer benefits above and beyond what the ingredients alone would do. Random example, a stew made from half a kg of venison, rose hips, and cat tails that when consumed hot and fresh gives you 600 calories, 30% thirst, the Warming Up benefit, and completely cures all Pain. But only when consumed hot and freshly cooked, to give you a reason to fire up the stove more often. Y'know...as opposed to having a file cabinet packed with mugs of cooked coffee ready to go...which is a little weird but c'mon we all do it.
  20. I think it'd be interesting if the car batteries were used as a sort of key item. Like you encounter a maglocked door that can only be opened during an aurora...but the problem is there's live wires all over the place so you can't get to it. The solution: Bring a car battery when there isn't an aurora, to power the lock and safely open the door.
  21. Compulsive extremes. Like I can't do anything in moderation, I have to do it to the extreme, to get the most out of my equipment. For example, chip a hole in the ice, fish for 100 hours straight without stopping, until I am nearly dead from exhaustion damage. Then sleep it off with some tea, and proceed to haul like 200kg worth of fish back home, systematically cook it all... All to make that 2% wear on my prybar worth it.
  22. That's not entirely accurate. It is true that many fruits and vegetables produced today--especially massive agri-business--are less rich in micronutrients today compared to say 50 years ago. However GMO's and MSG are not to blame. A GMO, or Genetically Modified Organism, is simply an organism that has been altered from its original state, to better suit our needs. Larger yields, natural pest resistance, that sort of thing. Corn is a perfect example of a GMO, as are eggplants. MSG (E621) is a naturally-occurring chemical that is used as a flavor enhancer in many processed foods. When consumed normally, it has no adverse effects on the human body whatsoever, mainly because the body normally produces MSG on its own. It's a simple non-essential amino acid, nothing more. If you were to eat a whole jar of it, well yeah you'd get sick. Same as if you ate a whole jar of just about any seasoning. Regardless of its effects (or lack thereof) on the human body, MSG has nothing to do with the micronutrient content in produce. The reason fruits and vegetables are overall less nutritious today is due largely to soil depletion, and being picked before they're ripe. Which, unfortunately, are core components of large-scale factory farms. In order to get them looking fresh and healthy on store shelves, they are picked early, and allowed to ripen in transit or on store shelves. If you make a point to skip Wal-Mart and instead shop locally, at a farmer's market, or get a CSA share, your vegetables are going to be just fine. Something like a family farm that doesn't over-work the soil, it doesn't get depleted of nutrients. And since it's picked when ripe and sold locally, it has the maximum amount of time to properly develop.
  23. Speaking generally this is true, although dietary requirements and other health conditions can throw a wrench into things. For example I take an iron supplement once a week on the advice of my doctor.
  24. Lol that's a non-answer if I ever heard one! Thanks for reading my question though
  25. How would that have been possible without using a mod or save editor? We can only RMB the batteries around. It's not possible to take them into your inventory, in order to carry them through an area transition.
