  1. I think it's a balance. HL caters to the majority, not the minority that can bust out thousands of days on interloper. By catering to the majority, it makes sense that the hostile wildlife would be dialed back, as the environmental hazards are dialed up.
  2. Random spawn, popped up in Milton. Goody! I'm on day 12 right now, I've looted the whole region and I'm currently on the fence as to whether I should grab the satchel in HRV, or move on. The colder temps strikes me as "Interloper Light". It's a bit of a problem day 1, but after that, no big deal. The low wolf population is amazing.
  3. When I found and drank my first bottle of Maple Syrup, all I could think of was this:
  4. A fun trick with the Mountaineer's Hut is to get a nice hot fire going, then sleep outside directly behind the hut. The heat from the fire keeps you warm even through the wall, making this a good way to handle cabin fever.

Who can drink 4 liters of lamp oil? Jerry can!
  6. The last two years it's the Halloween event. Four real-life days in a row the sun never rises, and each night has a specific theme to it. You have to start a new save to play it, so you won't have to risk an existing survival game. Day 1: Get ready. There are no wolves, and the weather is mild. Do your exploration and get ready for what comes next. Day 2 introduces demon wolves (wolves with glowing red eyes) but is otherwise comparable to Voyageur. Day 3 is All Aurora All The Time, and those demon wolves become demon aurora wolves. Day 4 is All Blizzard All The Time, and interior locations are like -20C so you can't rely solely on bed bonuses to stay warm. But at least the wildlife is gone. There are candy bars set out in candy dishes outside cabins, the camp office, houses, etc. that are worth 2500 calories each. Also pumpkin pies can be found, that are worth 2000 calories, and also have the capacity to fully restore your warmth. A full pie is a full warmth meter, so Esc-canceling halfway will leave you with half the meter restored. Also for a short time after eating a pie, wolves run from you instead of attack. And there are jack-o-lanterns scattered throughout the world, usually in some out of the way place deep in the forest. There are caches of goodies out there, like rifles, ammo, and "supercharged flashlights" which have 4 times the battery power. Oh, and occasionally you'll find human skulls just sitting around. They don't do anything, it's just for the spook factor. But the only reason they did the same thing two years in a row is 2019 it was basically all hands on deck getting Episode 3 launched, so they just reused the 2018 event. Not sure if they'll recycle it again for 2020 or if they'll change it up. Edit: They did it prior to 2018 as well, but it was just 4 days of darkness, the pies, candy bars, and red-eyed wolves. No special themes for each day.
  7. Poutine?! I know that's mostly a Quebecois thing but I can hope.
  8. Actually you can have multiple moose spawning in at once. It's just rare that you'll find yourself passing through two spawn points on a single day. Especially since the urge to hunt the rare beast when you see it is pretty strong! But as an example, I've recently seen a moose in Bleak Inlet near the FM transition cave (I let him live since I was on my way out), and a second at Milton Basin. Similarly I've found one at the Milton Basin on the same day I found one by the Hunting Lodge. And another time, one outside Carter dam (by the river) and another near the birch forest in PV. Some locations do seem to be more likely to produce a moose though. In particular I've had very good luck with that spot in PV I mentioned, halfway between the Engine and Mountaineer's Hut, outside the Hunting Lodge, Milton Basin, and Marsh Overlook.
  9. To be precise, 50% of your base carry capacity, so 15kg. If you have a moosehide satchel and Well Fed buff, your weight limit while exhausted is 25kg.
  10. Make sure you poke around a lot. I found quite a few hidden goodies, like some revolver ammo behind a cabinet door that had to be broken down, or a revolver that was hidden under a pallet that also had to be broken down first.
  11. That's Buffy the Survivor Slayer, the distant cousin to Fluffy and Scruffy.
  12. This honestly is the reason why I back Hinterland 200%. As in, not only am I completely in their corner, I will actively argue in their defense against anyone that has a complaint. Raph has kept his eye on the prize, but has not forgotten the players who ultimately keep this dream alive. And also, kudos to the support team. I've reported bugs that initially received what amounted to a "this is user error, please try again" response, but when I provided solid evidence and documentation of the issue, they took it seriously, and the problem was patched. I've worked tech support, I get both sides. Usually it IS user error, but the fact that they acknowledged the issue after reviewing that evidence, and passed it along to the development team to patch the issue speaks very highly of their commitment to providing a solid user experience. Ultimately we're all in this together. Players, devs, critics....all of us. And if you ever find yourself in the vicinity of the Paradise Meadows Farmstead, I've got a moose meat steak with your name on it.
  13. While Pleasant Valley is not my preferred choice of places to live, I would like to draw your attention to Thompson's Crossing. The part of town west of the bridge is not patrolled by wolves, it has a moose spawn point to the north, and there are a whopping 12 cooking surfaces in close proximity. Community center, 6 on the stove, 2 more on the fireplace. 2 on the grill out behind the rural store, and 2 more on the grill in the park with the swing set. It's not an efficient use of fuel to get all those fires going at once, but it is a very quick way to grill that moose you just shot.
  14. Well now I feel like a jerk lol. That was not my intent behind my choice of words, it was just reminiscing about the past. I still have the fateful screenshot--pure luck that the hide cured where it did--that set me on the path. Serendipity is a powerful force!
  15. I've been using the cure in place glitch ever since I discovered it back in alpha to wallpaper my house with animal hides. This serves a twofold purpose: One, it's friggen awesome, and Two: it gets the stuff up off the floor, which helps with organization. I'll have my wolf wall, my bear wall, my rabbit wall, my deer wall, and my moose wall. I don't bother with gut. On that subject, the best way to use this glitch is to wait until it hits 99%, then drop it on the floor and pass time for 12 hours. Keep an eye on the hide while you do this, but also keep an eye on the hours you've passed. If you see it change color somewhere between 3 and 4 hours passed...Esc-cancel, reload your last save, and pass 3 hours. Then position it with RMB, and you've just shaved 15 minutes off your real-world wait time. I normally don't condone save scumming, but this is already using an exploit for the fun of it so it gets a pass IMO. If you make a point of selecting more wait hours than you actually intend to wait, you can Esc-cancel early once you see the hide change color, and avoid triggering a save. Then you know approximately how many hours you have remaining before it hits 100% cured, and can plan your real life activities around that time table accordingly.
  16. Describing food is hard... Raw it's like a combination of a potato with the woodiness of a broccoli stalk. The starches chew out pretty easily, but then you're left with fibers in your mouth that don't break down so well. And like an onion, usually the outer layers are inedible. You have to get at the softer stuff inside. Cooked it softens up and becomes more easily chewable, and it helps mitigate that moldy cucumber taste. And on top of all that there's like a million varieties of cat tail, so your mileage may vary. Greatly.
  17. You could probably improvise a slow cooker using a pot, something to cover it, tomato soup, and a cut of raw meat. You wouldn't want to put it directly on the cook surface, it would need to be a little off to the side so it gets hot but not TOO hot. You want to cook it low and slow all day long. Then immediately prior to serving, sautee some chopped cattail shoots in fish oil. Serve a chunk of pot roast, the cat tails, drizzle some of that tomato soup/meat juice on top, and add a side of beans.
  18. And now you know why there are prybars by the toilets sometimes. All you need a little leverage.
  19. This happened to me once, but quitting and reloading the save cleared it up. Since the game saves when you enter an interior location I lost zero progress.
  20. Yup, any outdoor container counts. Cars, lockers, plastic or metal containers on the ground, backpacks, rock caches. Hell, even dead bodies.

    Ep2 bugs??

That locker you're referring to is placed for your personal storage. You can't loot it because it's intentionally empty, and you don't need a prybar to open it.
  22. That is actually the single most efficient cook surface in the entire game. It's got 6 burners AND the duration bonus from being outdoors.
  23. Convenience and organization mostly. If you have a big pile of bear meat on the ground, you can't easily count how much you have without picking it all up first. But if it's in a trunk, you can tell how much you have at a glance. 31kg remaining? Cool.
  24. If you play long enough, there will come a time you don't even want to use maps anymore, because it takes too long. Eventually you'll be wired up to build your own 3D map of the region in your head, and relying on that is faster than switching back and forth between windows trying to figure out if you're looking at the right pile of rocks. I remember having trouble navigating Mystery Lake way back when there were only 3 regions, and now I can navigate Forlorn Muskeg in the dark of night during a blizzard.
  25. Pretty much. Once you get that moosehide cloak, you can maintain it with bunny guts and fishing tackle by harvesting and re-crafting it.
