  1. The fire dynamics a well discussed elsewhere. I believe fire duration depends on the environment temps, not where the fire is, but wherever the player is. This can be exploited and is one reason I prefer fires outside. The outdoor-fire mechanics aside, do you think this building heat dynamic would affect your play?
  2. Late to the party on the stim question but @Raphael van Lierop I think they're great. Like @ajb1978 I save them, never judging a situation dire enough to warrant one. Except that is for a true Stim moment: ravaged by accidental food poisoning and exposure from consequential rieshi hunting, I low-condition-stumbled into the fire I was cooking on and burns dropped me 1 or 2%. I was sure the dark was about take me. Then I remembered the stim I'd long carried. It was salvation. Nothing else would have saved that (except the recent improvements to avoid accidentally eating uncooked meat but that's not the point). Its a moment I'll always remember. So yes, the stim is great.
  3. Z@ManicManiac it's great Raphael talks about this. While this idea is a step towards realism, as @UpUpAway95 illustrates, I suggest it for gameplay reasons. Specifically regarding fire. I never light a fire inside. I am playing Loper with a mind towards optimisation. Now that's not needed in every game mode but optimising is the stuff of survival and of decision making. So this indoor heat mechanic does a few things: makes indoor fires necessary as buildings off start colder. the heat from indoor fires goes further as it last beyond the fire. I think that adds to the decision making but not necessarily in a good way for the early game's pacing.
  4. I like the two step process and crafting requirements. But I'm with @odizzido on how long it takes - you should just do it until it works or you cancel. However., I feel it all gets quite complicated from a player experience perspective. So for gameplay I'd just fold it into the existing mechanics. The fire bow is craftable but then works like other ignition sources - use to start fire, but it with low success rate. It seems fair that it improves with fire lighting.
  5. Early game, especially on higher levels, being able to dive into a building with a temp of just a few degrees below zero is life saving. I'd just like to discuss an alternative approach to temps in these buildings: What if they reacted to the environment more? What if a fire really warmed them up and then they held their heat for some time? What if the weather affected how quickly that heat dwindled? The cosy fire is part of the games chemistry. I think this sort of dynamic could add to that. After all, if you've had the pot belly blasting out 60 degrees for 10 hours, it's not going to be cold 1 hour later... But this of course has other implications for this game which is of course an emulator, not a simulator. But what do you think? Edit: typo.
  6. @Gravos, welcome to the Loper life! As @Jimmy implies, the best struggle tool is avoidance 😀. I carry the knife because it's light and good for harvesting speed but I aim to avoid and even carry slivers of meat to bribe those would be attackers. The ML office is solid. Closer to stuff than trappers. The cave on the hill opposite can be reached safely even in blizzards (sprains happen). Cabin fever however never bothers me as I try to be out fuel hunting everyday from early afternoon until late. When the weather sucks, that's the time to craft. Any early game in Loper, you want to your the world for free calories and stuff before the weather gets colder. Right now I'm having a camping holiday at marsh ridge but I'll return to the office soon enough. Good luck!
  7. @Rexdawn I totally agree. It has much going for it on Loper but the wolves + sight lines make it terrifying. I've never stayed long term but I think the trick is to master the wolf movements. While there's sound advice and options regarding dealing with wolf encounters, I personally prefer to avoid contact altogether and Milton makes that very difficult. The outdoor crafting really appeals but I'll stick to passing through.
  8. Oh yeah, @ajb1978, I'm with you on the wind thing. In fact, I'm assuming it's a real mechanic so I now make a point of looking, when possible in the direction I want the wind to come from (i.e. not the way I'm going). Also sprains. I accept the mechanic, I really do, but still. God damn it!
  9. It seems to be another thing the TLD team got right - no one spot is quite perfect. I agree with much said above. You want to be able to have that fire out of the wind while watching the snow fall but you also want the security of a bed that's always hypothermia free. Both the look outs are a bit of a pain to venture in and out from. The Church is great but its in DP (maybe I need to cut DP some slack) and I feel just like @Pillock does about the TWM hut (but some players swear by it). The greatest feeling for me is the flight to safety before the coming storm. It might even be the moment those first few innocent flakes appear in the air.

  11. @ThePancakeLady I was agreeing with the OP specifically on the painkiller point. You do know that if you take pain killers for your sprain that your head ache will feel better too right? Equally, if all your toes hurt, you really shouldn't take 10 doses of pain killers. I'm pretty sure there's stuff about that on the box. 😉
  12. We should be able to make mistakes but the OP is right about nonsensical waste - if you take painkillers they kill pain. That can't really go wrong. And sprains... The system is ok. The indicator helps. And I say that even though I recently walked 2 yards up a steep slope (while fresh and travelling light) and got a sprain. Walked 2 more yards up. A 2nd sprain. Decided to abort. Walked 2 yards back. Sprain 3. Day was a write off. But more often than not, sprains don't happen.
  13. "Looking forward to a few cold situations.." ! You shouldn't have to wait long... On Loper I look forward to a few not cold situations. Coal is gold as @Jolan says. It's also the most weight efficient fuel, I believe.
  14. @DaveMcD The largest outdoor only connected area stretches from CH to MT but I need to check a few locations for what counts as indoor. Caves do! Go figure... The bedroll and especially mag glass issue can really shut you down . However, the proof of this challenge is the time spent indoors stat. Now that will stay at 0hrs if you dash in and out of a building or two. So if you use that to hit a few key spots in search of those items then I reckon it's fair game. It's not like your using the interiors to survive, your just grabbing gear that happens to only spawn in doors. If you enjoy Outerloper, maybe give it a try 😁
  15. As you undoubtedly know, Outloper proves that if you've got fire and a bunch of sticks you can handle any temps. Clothing then is a mechanism that determines how long you can stay away from the fire. It also makes the game's lack of natural fire starting annoying as once matches are gone you need sunshine - if you're lucky enough to find a may glass outside. Anyway, I was wondering if you've ever played Outloper with zero indoor time - keeping the game's indoor time counter to zero? I think this procludes caves but still leaves the odd shelter viable..
  16. Deer parking: you of course know that you can startle a deer sending them in the direction you want. But note that when it stops running, it will tend to turn to face you and slowly wander back toward you. This means you can fine tune deer positioning for a head shot in a more convenient place. Such as your camp (office): Good Trip hazard
  17. While attempting to play without ever going in a building or mine I spawned at the Waterfall, FM, found matches by the tower and got a wolf to down a deer in a sheltered nook - food, water and warmth sorted before I'd walked 1km! That was good.
  18. Thanks for the research @TheEldritchGod! I'm really pleased tea is here as not being able to drink a hot drink unless it was medicinal just felt wrong. I'm looking forward to the temp bonus in travel but if the supply is so limited (Loper) I may be disappointed. I'd rather seem more tea for warmth than the recovery bonus. But still! Better some than none.
  19. Aye! I'd like a placeable, wind proof structure you can have a fire in. I think something like a small skinned dom tent would be great. Building on the snow shelter we already have, you could upgrade using large pieces of wood, cured skins and guts. You could go to a small basic windproof dome then onto a well insulated, wolf proof dome. The finished product could require a large number of skins and hours work. Now it doesn't fit with the game's focus which is survival, not settling. However, once you're crafting sets of bear skin equipment you are pretty much settled. So I'd love something like that to give the game more late game activity.

  21. I agree - ready to eat from frozen isn't realistic. I don't think cooking from frozen is too hard. It would make sense that, something thawed, stays thawed while carried. But a big game changer, connected to this I think, would be changes to the thermal dynamics of buildings, specifically, that they should warm up when you heat them and stay warm for a while. Its probably worth a separate thread but, for example, after having an 8 hour fire in the camp office stove, the air temp should be above freezing and stuff in there should thaw. The place should then stay warm for a while, keeping your soup liquid for a bit longer. How this all works is definitely another thread...
  22. Hang on, no hammer, no party! So you're trying to survive the Keg on Interloper with whatever random clothes turn up and not much else. Even if you can stablise some warm sleeping arrangment, the worsening weather and clothing condition will soon make things untenable. So much is down to the chance of weather - get one blizzard when your due to collect wood and you're probably done for. Still. Challenge. Good luck!
  23. Unlucky! In hindsight, it seems like your determination to get home killed you. If you'd stopped in that cave to warm up, you might have made it. I believe cold kills twice as quick as tiredness. It's a great challenge though and thanks for sharing! The Keg at least has coal around but if you don't get a bedroll I don't see you making it long enough to make your own. But that's the challenge! Good luck!

  25. @DaveMcD not sure how I missed this till now but thanks for sharing that! A great adventure and a successful run with some memorable moments early on. You must have been buzzing after that first summit! The bedroll find on winding river though seems like the real make or break moment. Without a portable bed, early Outerloper is a game of desperate strategy. I've yet to make a go of living out of the mountaineer's but I'll have to give it a shot. I think if Outerloper needs anything it's for firewood to be a wee bit more available and, for personal interest, allowing a visit to one building every 50 days would give a nice goal / bonus to aim for. Your point about the wind wanting to blow if you're face is something I've noticed just this week myself! If havesting a carcass by a fire with protection on one side, I always look towards the protection.. so far the wind always picked up in my face and the fire stayed. Still, the wind will switch but it's a great observation. Well. Thanks for sharing! GG, WP
