  1. Yeah I was thinking it'd be an easy way to get a bigger fire going, like light a torch so you can use the torch to get a stove going.
  2. I'd wager some of the past discussions showing the ballistic capability of .303 kind of messed up the suspension of disbelief when it came to limiting the rifle in the game. .303 keeps company with the likes of 7.62x54r, .30-06, and 8mm mauser, all of which have a ton of power, especially at the ranges the game limits you to. I've at the very least done some not unsubstantial cratering to 3/8" AR550 steel target with 8mm mauser inside of 25 yards. While its technically got more muzzle energy than the .303, I doubt there's a bear out there with any forward facing bones that will be comparable to 3/8" AR550 steel plate. It can really kill the mystery if you've got a ballistics data dump for whatever caliber you identify. IMO I've posted in the past that I'd be ok with the revolver being .38 special, used as a last resort firearm, it would be enough to make a wolf think twice after being hit but not enough to turn an already charging bear.
  3. Its been a while since I've played TLD, but when the revolver was first introduced, I too dumped a considerable amount of ammo into a moose that didn't drop it. They don't mention the caliber, but with just 6 rounds in the cylinder I'd have to imagine at a minimum its a .38 special or .357 magnum, anything bigger and you'd be stuck with 5 rounds vs 6. I just pretend that the only ammo you can get is .38 special hollow point in a low powered loading to explain how woefully underpowered the revolver is against big game.
  4. The only experience I had so far with the revolver was with a moose and deer. After trying one or two individual shots, I finally emptied a whole cylinder into the moose and that finally put it down. I think the deer took maybe 1-2 shots but I did sneak up on it and took my time to line up an ideal shot.
  5. As someone who has forgotten their gloves a time or two when going to the range, yeah if it gets pretty cold it will become very hard to control a firearm when target shooting. As my hands got colder, my trigger squeeze got harder and harder to control, I think in the game that could be reflected with fliers on a normally dead on shot.
  6. The .303 only really surfaces in the discussion of C&R (Curio and Relic) collection, guys like me are collectors of old rifles and other firearms. Its only the Enfields that I ever see get chambered in .303 and ammo for it is harder than I'd like it to be to find in the US. Since it was a British rifle and Canada was a commonwealth nation, it made sense to have that commonality especially during the major conflicts like World War II.
  7. In a do or die situation, nothing should go to waste, I think maybe for the game it should be implied, but if some of you want to make it more explicit perhaps it can be its own request 😛 Its a good thing we're not in a survival scenario then eh? Has someone requested maybe a bone marrow soup in the game?
  8. This, at least on all the TV shows (like Man vs. Wild and Survivorman) they do make it a point to talk about protein poisoning as a legitimate concern. IMO it makes sense, if you are in a life or death situation your body is probably gonna utilize everything you give it, fat included. If all you really did was hike through snow, chop up wood, hunt and quarter deer, etc then I can imagine that already would put a drain on your body's fat stores. Putting it in a state of imbalance seems like it would be really easy to do if your priorities are to stay alive. FYI in Survivorman the host did mention one way to help lessen the effects of protein poisoning is to eat the bone marrow since there is fat in there. Most people would just discard them, but the bones do have fat in them.
  9. Fair enough, the other source could be from fish. Salmon for example, particularly big ones could probably throw enough fat into the mix to counter the protein poisoning.
  10. I think I proposed something like this in the past, but what I think we should add if pancakes are to be a thing, is the maple syrup.
  11. Right off the bat the fattiest thing I have in my kitchen is peanut butter according the label (YMMV) it provides 16g of fat to which it states that's 24% of your daily value. Since peanut butter is already in the game there's that, condensed milk is even higher at 27g and is considered 41% of your daily value for fat.
  12. I haven't had a chance to play it, but I'd hazard a guess that its .38 special. Its old enough to be in line with the aesthetic of the game and IMO a .38 special may be great at threatening people, but animals are a different story. You might be a legit menace to wolves, but a bear or moose would just get angry even if you emptied the whole cylinder into them.
  13. This is starting to remind me of Shadowrun, I think if done well this can add flavor to the game.
  14. I'll be in neighboring Arizona, I do have to go to higher elevations to get to the temperature range you are describing, but when I do I've been able to use the following and not feel ill prepared. Base layer shirt and pants - similar to this. Quarter zip long sleeved shirt - just like this. Field jacket (w/o liner) - like this. For pants you can use something that has a fleece liner like this. Don't forget gloves, thick socks, and some kind of hat to cover your ears, all of this stuff you can probably get at a local store if you're not comfortable ordering online. That's just walking around clothes, if you can rent formal ski gear do it, its probably far more proper and appropriate.
  15. To provide another perspective I've seen some poorly aged 40 year olds, that I thought were far older. Our society is full of sedentary work unfortunately and a lot of people who ought to be physically capable, aren't. Right now I'm in the middle of snowbird season, my condo is currently surrounded by Canadian retirees, none of them seem too fragile health wise, everyone seems physically independent. They might move a little slower, but other than that I don't observe any major hindrances from their age.
  16. I'm not vegan/vegetarian, but I do have an affinity for animals, I actually do feel a great amount of remorse anytime I catch a rabbit and snap its neck. I guess its the death squeak that gets me. As others have said though I'll do what I have to do to survive, if it means a cute animal has to do get neck snapped then so be it.
  17. Agreed, make it like a rabbit with wings, easy to get, but not that much meat. That said, unless you are all the world's best target shooters, I don't see how we're hitting them with a hunting rifle. I figure any kind of shotgun and birdshot would need to happen before Ptarmigan show up in the game.
  18. Just going off of prior experience on these boards, it seems that the feeling is that if you can get a renewable resource that can create endless fire, it would somehow detract from the game. I'm not saying I agree with it, I'm just saying a lot of people may come at you with that mentality.
  19. I'm sure this has been brought up before and don't quote me on this but I think in the previous discussions it was considered antithetical to one of the core design points. With that being said, I wouldn't have any problem with it, I'd even frame it as something you could learn from a character in story mode (say someone from the First Nations).
