  1. I got Red Dead Redemption vibes from your post, I'm imagining a panic fire where you just fan the trigger like a cowboy if you have a predator charging you.
  2. So take this experience with a grain of salt, I had to go to Montreal for work recently and despite not knowing how to read/speak French, I could still make it through that city with just English. Maybe the part I visited was more English friendly, but I never felt like I would be at a severe disadvantage. It would be interesting though to see some of that mixing of English/French in the game, that seemed like a uniquely Canadian thing to me, just like when I first moved to the US mainland and started seeing English/Spanish co-existing with a lot of signage.
  3. I figured they wouldn't, but this is coming from my revolver collecting, I've only ever typically seen 5 round revolvers in .38 being the small snub nosed type. In terms of customer use cases, I can't think of one that any manufacturer would go for, in which they'd create a revolver that is 5 rounds in the cylinder with a longer barrel, but in .38 caliber. Now its been a while since I played the game but I do know there is a reloading bench, reloaders have experimented with the parameters of the cartridge itself and can really push the performance of something mundane like a .38 into the next performance level up. If we're thinking of converting that into a game mechanic perhaps a new formulation of gunpowder that is resource intensive and requires rare components to make, but the resulting revolver ammo having much more stopping power.
  4. My thoughts on the hunting revolver would be that to maintain a 5 round cylinder, it'd likely have to a different, i.e. larger caliber than what the standard revolver uses. If we assume the standard revolver is just a .38 then bumping it up to a .44 could make sense when trying to increase power at the expense of capacity.
  5. I'd have to say I keep the revolver holstered most of the time, but that's only if the area I'm in is secured, maybe my first time through I'll have it out but I am not in explorer mode at that point.
  6. Yeah if the revolver's origin is likely that it was a law enforcement officer's sidearm, I can see that its probably not going to see as much heavy use as like a competition shooter. It's kind of like comparing the tire wear on an F1 race car after a few laps vs. your personal vehicle after a week of regular highway driving, one is definitely going to need to be changed. I've purchased some police trade in firearms before and they are usually in very nice condition, the S&W Model 64 and 65 I got clean up real nice and since they both most likely were only shot during an annual re qualification, they've likely got a relatively low round count compared to their age.
  7. I feel like the game is meant to do that though, there's a duality in everything you do in the game. For me it seems like one way to approach this game is as a series of risks, if you fail to manage your risks properly you're character will suffer some kind of negative consequence. In terms of problems I've experienced personally with revolvers, I had made the mistake of using cheap Russian steel cased ammo in a cheap Taurus revolver. A combination of the revolver's cylinder not having each chamber uniformly sized and the steel cased ammo expanding and being difficult to extract caused it fire, but left the remaining case stuck in the undersized chamber. After that round when I tried to fire again I noticed that the steel case was protruding from the chamber and that stopped the cylinder rotation. When I tried to use the extractor to remove all the rounds at once from cylinder all but the one undersized chamber extracted. I had to use a cleaning rod from my Mosin get it out, but in the process I broke the crane screw which caused the cylinder and crane assembly to fall out when I tried to reload it.
  8. I think the original poster describes something that is more of an ammunition problem as opposed to a mechanical one. I think I've discussed in the past ammunition that's found outside not having the best condition and possibly having issues like this. I've been getting into revolvers myself and even the most poorly made revolvers (looking at Taurus) are not likely to have timing issues with their action, that is unless you have literally been using it as a hammer or club. 😛 I haven't shot any surplus ammo through any of my revolvers before, but I've shot surplus ammo from my old bolt actions, I've had some with hard or possibly defective primers that required a second time through the rifle to finally fire. Then I've had some where it did ignite the primer but there was a perceptible lag before the round actually fired. Not sure if that's likely to happen with revolver ammo, but I can say it happened with old surplus Yugoslavian rifle ammo, the case that I got was supposed to be a spam can that would've been perfectly sealed but the seller did tell me that the seal was broken and the ammo had been exposed to the elements, so I just accept the risk since this particular ammo was not super common or easy to get where I live. The revolver in the game I like to think of as a Franken revolver since its not an exact 1:1 copy of any real life version, but in my mind I like to think that it was probably something that was initially Colt or Smith & Wesson quality when it was bought new, but over time and with use (and lack of maintenance) it may no longer have the rock solid action that it did when it was new. So even if you restore its condition back to 100% I think it could be feasible to incorporate some problems endemic to older designs of revolvers that while they are good condition wise, they may not have 100% perfect operation, i.e. action goes out of time.
  9. Waterfowl and other birds in that region probably would be appropriate for a double barrel shotgun, but I think if we limit it all to birdshot, that would allow you to hunt the gamebirds without making the player OP against wolves, moose, and bear.
  10. I have no problem with making the revolver a .357, but jokingly have only .38spl spawn. I haven't had the change to play the update with reloading, but as I read up on the real life activity of it, I can see an experienced reloader created a formidable .357 load. Maybe that can somehow be reflected in the game, once you are at max skill level for reloading you can create some pretty effective ammunition. In the context of self defense with firearms "stopping power" is almost synonymous with "killing power". When it comes to predator charges "stopping" their charge is only achieved by "killing" them unfortunately.
  11. What I did with the reishi I bought from the farmer's market was to just boil it in a pot and use that as my tea. From what I read you can reuse them, just dry them and store them for later. The commercial reishi tea is this stuff.
  12. I do feel a little distraught that it has come to this. The food prep I can get behind, but even though I wholeheartedly support responsible gun ownership, I do feel its an unfortunately situation we all find ourselves in if it really does come to that. People are panic buying ammo where I am at, it really is looking like life imitating art at this point, I bought one of the last boxes of .308 ammo. I haven't bought ammo in 6 months and this was just meant to do a slow and low replacement of what I had used for practice.
  13. I picked up some dried reishi from a farmer's market last year, it was quite bitter. Its still drinkable but I definitely prefer the more commercial preparation that I stumbled upon recently. Its probably more processed and less effective than the real stuff, but its quicker to make and easier to drink.
  14. This could be because I've been playing a lot of Red Dead Redemption 2 lately, but something like the Remington Rolling Block rifle could fit the bill here. Its not a bolt action and it doesn't have an internal magazine so you're limited to loading one round at a time. Those rate of fire and reloading limitations could be offset by making it a little more accurate and a little more powerful than the standard rifles. I'd say it'd make you more deliberate about your shots, you miss against a bear and it should maul you before you even get it reloaded.
  15. Yeah don't get me wrong a .38 special revolver is probably not an ideal field revolver if you're hunting IRL, while hunting is not to my taste, if I were to do it, I'd at a minimum use an L-frame revolver with the hottest .357 magnum I could find. It'll get bumped up to a .44 magnum if polar/grizzly bears are to be expected. Just tried to do some research on revolvers in Canada and all I could find was a wikipedia entry on what their military used. In World War II they used a S&W M&P in .38 special in addition to that they used revolvers chambered in .455 Webley. Looking at the ballistic data the .455 Webley reminds me of .44 special with its large diameter and low muzzle velocity.
  16. I'm dealing with a wound right now and according to a lot of first aid instructions, any wound that has the propensity to bleed through the bandage should be changed at least a few times a day. Like I'd imagine a pretty bad wolf bite would necessitate this, of course I would keep bandages still be craftable via cloth, but I think the justification here is to make sure you feel more of a resource drain when you screw up and try to fight a wolf, then lose.
  17. Yeah I'm not down with the failures down to that level, not just because it would not be in line with what the expected audience wants, but because again TLD picked firearms that tend to have a low instance of failure down to that level. I get the impression that the revolvers in this game will show far more carry wear as opposed to internal wear. The only way I can think of to even force internal wear is to fire several thousand rounds of the hottest +p ammo or .38-44 level ammo in a short period of time. The ammo spawn rates wouldn't be in the thousands so its really hard to come up with reasons to explain why a revolver, which has the reputation for minimal issues and maximum longevity, would start to have problems from just firing one or two cylinders worth of ammo.
  18. Just to share some personal experience the only time I found that I had a bolt action malfunction that I couldn't deal without in the field was a stuck case (I've got one of those 7mm to 7.62 conversion Spanish Mauser rifles). Other than that, TLD's choice in firearms are ones that tend not to have problems if they were already fine to begin with. That Spanish Mauser I mentioned is well over a 100 years old now, if something were to break it would've done so by now. That's the beauty of these old surplus military rifles, they were built well and having no wars to fight they just sit unused not being abused so they remain as strong as ever.
  19. Yeah I'd say make it difficult to craft candles but give them a decent enough burn time. Those scented candles at least seem to give a good 8 hours of burn time. I've seen some ones crafted in a mason jar last for near 24 hours straight, so maybe we can just sacrifice a tin can to make one but make it very resource heavy to make.
  20. Exactly, you'd get the benefit of an instant caffeine boost, but without the benefit of the warm up that comes with the work of boiling regular coffee.
  21. I mean to say keep a candle going so that you can just get near it with the torch and light it without sacrificing a match.
  22. I think I needed to clarify my point, I elaborated on all the .303 and its contemporaries because when you realize what it can do IRL, it doesn't jive with what you see in the game. Inside of 25 yards you'll probably easily penetrate the entire length of all the animals that you run into the game, but if the game were like that, you'd wonder where the challenge was after getting well established resources wise. I wouldn't say I am a .38 special fan, just someone who is getting into revolvers. I like that you mentioned the Buffalo Bore/Underwood loads, I actually just ordered some of these, when I read up on the ballistics, they seemed to exceed the capability of lower end .357 magnum ammo like this Winchester white box stuff. The WWB is coming in at 410 ft/lbs for muzzle energy and the Buffalo Bore is doing 505 ft/lbs of energy. So the reason I chose .38 special for the game is mostly to reflect the very austere background of the game environment itself. I get the impression from what civilization is present in the game, that everything is a few decades behind as far as standards. I'd imagine that their law enforcement for example would probably still be using revolvers even if their counterparts in mainland Canada have moved onto semi-automatics. The sensibilities and aesthetics overall of the game scream rustic and old fashioned to me, so why not their firearms? I know in the past the community has shown a desire to curate what gets into the game and I agree with the old fashioned sensibility/aesthetic it currently has. As far as firearms I'd try to keep it in line with that, so I'd be more excited to see a pump action shotgun with wood furniture being added as opposed to a box fed semi-auto rifle being added.
  23. Yeah that is the impression I get as well, you'd be "alive" but you might be one bad situation away from death. I've been reading about a "vegan" strongman and while he might be stronger than the average person who lives a sedentary lifestyle, he doesn't seem to peer well with his behemoth meat eating brethren. Anyway back on topic, I have an affinity for animals and I do feel a bit sad for every rabbit that I harvest in the game. I probably wouldn't have the guts to do it IRL even if it was life or death.
  24. How about iced coffee in a can instead? You'd have similar benefits to the regular coffee without having to either brew it or find the cup just randomly in the world. It seems that you have quite a few choices in can and bottle form in Canada.
  25. I think I've suggested at leas the boar in the past, they seem to be quite the invasive species in the southeastern United States. I think even posted an article stating that they are making their way into Canada as well.
