  1. This gotta be the most perplexing sitting dead I've encountered yet. After extensive analysis of the scene, I have concluded this poor chap died of some pre-existing condition. Heart attack is my best quess. Examining the details, plenty of fuel for the fire, both inside the cave and outside as well. As I turned out his pockets I found an unopened MRE and a candy bar. Nearby was a can of summit soda along with a Field Dressing Your Kill skill book and a general knowledge book. I also recovered a revolver in good working order loaded with 3 live rounds. Just outside the cave is a climbing rope down and from the top of ledge you can see the Camp Office down below. This fellow had all the necessities to sustain life. Perplexing, indeed. Unless of course he didn't have any matches and couldn't get his fire going and eventually succumbed to the bitter cold...
  2. Found this sad looking dude in one of the cabins out in Mystery Lake Not sure about the vibe I got here, but I think this guy might have accidentally cut himself with his hunting knife and bled out before he could administer first aide upon himself. Besides an almost brand new knife, there were a couple of bandages on the floor and bottle of antiseptic. Take this as a lesson survivors, always cut away from your body. It only takes one slip of the knife to end your own life...
  3. Congratulations! I remember that feeling too when I launched my first attempt at this challenge... The initial brutality of the mauling was indelibly etched into my mind and it took me a few tries to vanquish the bruin. But I finally did! Here's your official Bruin Buster's Award ! 🏆
  4. so if I understand you correctly, if I pick up a single book and drop it later, the cover stays the same as when I found it. So if I find a book with a fish cover and when I drop it the book still has a fish cover, correct? But if you pick up more than one book, the covers change typically to the the sunny landscape. hmmm, yeah that does pose a dilemma if you're going to be transporting literally dozens of books to a central location. Especially if as you mentioned, you'd want to keep their original covers intact for the purposes of showcasing your collection. Since you pointed it out, I'd like to mention there are also those books that kinda look like technical books, got those colored squares all over them. Reminds me of my old math and science text books. Found a few in the dam the other day and the covers seemed appropriate to what you'd expect in a technical/industrial setting like at Carter Hydro. I was also musing that when you find "stacks of paper" those seem to remind me of legal documents and such as compared to the newsprint and the rolled up newspapers.
  5. Yes, the next difficulty level being developed will be a doozy... first you spawn outside at night in a raging white out blizzard. In your inventory there is only 1 match and that's when you discover you're only wearing underpants...
  6. @Screenshot Pilgrim thank you for the kind words. I'm looking forward to seeing some creative displays if a few more survivors get into the quest! I was just wondering however if the more difficult levels of gameplay would decrease the amount of other books and newspapers in the world like it does with food items, etc? Or is the same amount present since they are non-decay items?
  7. Hey @Screenshot Pilgrim I like this idea so much that I hope Hinterland picks up on the idea and maybe creates an "event" outta the whole concept! Being a little bit of a history buff, I just wanted to share a little Library trivia with you, did you know that in the late 1950's Canada and the USA teamed up and formed the National Library Associations and eventually started a National Library Week to stimulate people to read more and become aware of the extensive knowledge base available to them for free! During the outset of the program, it was decided to hold the event in April of each year although that changed over time. From what I understand, Canada's program was a lot more successful and subsequently went to a month long promotion many years ago which are typically being held each October. The USA however hasn't changed much... still in April and still only for 1 week. I like @odium idea about skill book only and I like your idea for that title, too. dug this one outta the archives for you... part of this is my sleeping bag hoarder run... another possible challenge/quest idea for if you're really bored in the sandbox. but I think I got every copy of Wilderness Kitchen, Stay on Target, The Sewing Primer and Survive the Outdoors every printed! only found the one copy of Guns, Guns & Guns and I do believe there are always two copies spawned in each game so this collection isn't even done and now never will be. So I say onwards with screen shots of the quest for knowledge!
  8. Did you know, that if you break the crates under the stairs in the lower portion of the Carter Hydro dam, you can sometimes find a nearly full 4 liter fuel can?
  9. I think maybe we outta take this idea and start it's own discussion. Probably would get good traction and we can minimize the commentary on the sharing screenshots thread? just thinking out loud... It was your idea @Screenshot Pilgrim so you should do the honors!
  10. Wowza! No sooner do I transition from MT to ML via the cave but soon as I do, who do I come across that very same afternoon? Taking into consideration I'm almost spent from two rope climbs, I figure I can't let this opportunity pass me by. I slurp down my last cup of coffee and prepare to do battle with Bullwinkle... As he shakes his mighty head angrily I stand up and let loose and watch in amazement as he slumps into a heap. Not as good of placement as your shot, but I'll take it!
  11. Working my down to the farmhouse in Mountain Town, wary of the couple of wolves that usually patrol the area I find this guy sitting in the hay shed with a great view of the farmhouse and barn as the fog begins to clear. He must have been stumbling about blindly in a snow storm to have given up so close to shelter. His pockets were empty. He died cold and alone. utterly defeated.
  12. I've document some item repair glitches... follow the link if you wanna good laugh! https://hinterlandforums.com/forums/topic/37106-death-by-repair/
  13. no mods used. this is just the glitchy part of the item placement mechanics in the game. unless you are making a joke about the glitchy item placement mechanics in the game... are you? or is there really a "free placement mod?" I seriously looked on Nexus but nothing for TLD.
  14. ...I told you I was saving that chocolate bar for later... now prepare to die! I guess you can bring a knife to a gun fight!
  15. That actually sounds like it could be an entertaining quest. Just curious, but where would you suggest the Library be located? I'm think we need some some space? I suppose the quonset hut on CH would be ideal. Lots of counter space to accommodate all those texts in addition to have a special section just for skill books.
  16. Following the caw caw caw of a murder of crows in the mist, I stumble upon this poor fellow. Tucked into a little alcove between the rocks with only a few branches and sticks nearby and not much anything else for fuel, it doesn't appear that he made a good choice. Now just outside this little clearing is the road and just a scant bit away sits an abandoned car. I think our victim here was driving when of course suddenly his vehicle broke down. Armed with only his lukewarm cup of gas station coffee and as it was already snowing heavily he thought to himself if he can just hoof it down to the church, he can get outta the cold. but no sooner had he started when the weather turns into a full on raging blizzard a practical white out. Disoriented he blindly stumbles into the alcove. Realizing the wind was no longer so savage in this little protected space, desperately he gathers some sticks and tinder and with his last match starts a fire! apparently not enough. I took the coffee... and although I don't wish to admit it, I took his worn thermal underwear... ...they were still frozen when I put them on...
  17. Morning in the ole mansion up in Mountain Town I slowly stoke the fire back to life and soon am rewarded with a nice cracklin blaze bring the warmth back into my hands and fingers. I re-heat a cup coffee as I prepare my to break my fast with some freshly cooked venison steaks. As I listening to the increasing frenzy of the blowing wind whistling thru the old house, I'm thankful the old owner never threw away all those old Encyclopedia Britanica's...
  18. No sooner had I finished looting the credit union, I head across the street to the postal office, urged on by the snarl of one of the patrolling wolves. I secure the door behind me and start to scan the room and find this guy huddled in a corner, hunkered down clutching two cans of orange spray paint. I search his bag and it's empty. The sun streaming thru the windows make it difficult to see, so I crouch down for a closer look. Couple of bottles of pain killers sitting on the floor... as I riffle thru his pockets, I find a stale crunchy bar. I'd hate to speculate about his demise, but I think he killed himself with an overdose of pain killers and perhaps even was huffing the contents of these paint cans. Upon closer examination, one of the cans was full, the other was half empty. Well at least he departed this world feeling no pain.
  19. Came across this guy today when I entered the credit union up in Mountain Town First thing I noticed was the nearly brand new pry bar sitting on the floor at his side. His backpack, just out of frame had a chocolate bar in it but was otherwise empty. Then I saw the note taped to the atm... "NO CASH" I immediately thought of Reddit's dumb criminals thread and this guy was a prime candidate for membership! I'm thinking this guy broke into the credit union which is why the door is already open when you get there. As he is working the door over outside, he is thinking about all the stuff he's gonna do with money as soon as he gets back to the mainland. Gin, Girls, Gambling and Guns, the works! He's already intoxicated by his fantasy that when the door pops open he casually saunters on over to the machine on the left, puts his bag down and gets ready to some serious business with atm on the right. As he prepares to plunge the prybar into credit card slot, he sees the note, reads it and with a sobering realization slumps to the ground in complete despair. He loses his will to live as he slowly comprehends the finality of his predicament. maybe shoulda stayed on the bus?!? I'd like to ask you to please add your screenshot(s) and story if you come across any sitting dead in your gameplay. I'd be fun to see how much we could grow this!
  20. Morning at the Hunting Lodge in Broken Railroad It's nice coming down the stairs early in the morning and seeing and feeling the warmth radiate from the fireplace and stove The glow from the stove emits a warm reddish hue on the worn floor boards The smell of fresh hot tea and hot peaches permeates the lodge and along with the freshly cooked thick slabs of venison adorning the plates on my busy breakfast table. I step back as I pull a torch from the fire, realizing full on that I'll be spending another day snuggled before the fire.
  21. They all bring some excitement to the game that you don't get from just playing in the sandbox since they are kinda mission based or driven if you will. Been a while since I've played any of them but if memory serves, the are all basically voyager level wildlife and weather. Except for some of the more advanced challenges, like As the Dead Sleep which is more stalker like as I remember it. If you haven't had your full share of being mauled by the bear, the Hunted part 1 and 2 will probably get you ready for Darkwalker as you gotta evade that damn bruin from tracking you all over the map. Satisfying though to finally be able to pop a bullet in ass when you eventually make it to Trapper's Cabin. I liked the Nomad challenge cause it helps you focus on route selection and resource management as you do so much walking. Gear load out and selection, the choices you make trying to stay close to carry capacity without being overly encumbered. Good training run for learning the map, imho. Same goes for the archivist where travel from region to region downloading the old memory buffers in the computers. All during auroras and the wildlife is going apeshit crazy all around you. Feels somewhat familiar at times. Flare gun challenge is good to for learning the regions, for route planning and traveling quick, as you have time constraints in place as well as aggressive wildlife. Nothing like climbing up to the summit to get the flare gun and then leaving most everything else behind. Totally messed with my head having to leave those 10 lanterns behind... If I was gonna pick one as my most favorite, I'd say it was the Nomad.
  22. Yeah, I'm pretty sure you've gotta deploy the rope from the lookout. It's usually hanging up outside the lookout on the back wall. If it's not deployed there's no way up so that's a big factor in planning a route in or out... yeah, this ain't gonna be no syrup run...
  23. It's been a while since I've been to BI, but last I remember you rope down from the ravine, but if you accessed BI via the cave from FM that's your only way out too as there's no rope leading up from the bottom unless it was previously deployed from the lookout. I could be mistaken, but if memory serves, am I right?
