  1. The birch bark tea is definitely a good thing but I cannot believe we cannot find dry rice or beans or other canned foods that can be cooked other than baked beans and peaches in the world. If I lived in the middle of nowhere with just a gas station to buy food from locally, I would make sure to have a large stockpile of dry foods that would do well for extremely long term storage and last a long time.
  2. Not vegan or even vegetarian IRL, however I do cringe at having to kill every animal in the game when it comes down to it. I also cringe at the sound of harvesting the meat, guts, and hide as well as harvesting the fish. I do wish we could find stuff like bags of dry rice and beans and be able to use them to make a more complete meal with a small bonus of some sort at the expense of more time spent to prepare them.
  3. If it was me irl, I imagine stepping onto the ice even from only a couple inches ledge could be risky for a fall.
  4. I don't think I have played nearly that many hours but less than 20 bucks for what gameplay I've managed is a steal! Oh and I actually bought it again when it came out on XBox One. That's not even taking into consideration the fact that when I first bought the game on Steam, it was still in the stage when Survival Mode was really considered just a testing ground for story mode and only stayed as a feature because so many people enjoyed it. Maybe it is just my 31 years of life and impoverished background showing but it gets under my skin when people don't realize the value they get for the price they pay for something and complain. I really ought to buy some store merch seeing as the game was so cheap but the one thing I'd really like isn't microwave safe and therefore less useful than it could be.
  5. I played half the day away yesterday and never experienced sprains in areas where realistically it would be 100 percent safe. IMHO realistically, in the situation the survivor is in, there could be a thin layer of ice on roadways or in the snow or even objects hidden by deep snow that could be dangerous and yet in game there is no danger of that. I only got 2 sprains in total and yet played 10 game days. One was from traversing an obvious risky area (Like so obvious no warning should be needed to know it was risky) while encumbered. The 2nd was from a wolf encounter gone somewhat wrong ending with a neck injury, a wrist sprain, and a wolf that got a knife wound that made it slowly bleed to its end of life. I also don't recall the warning flashing but maybe it was there... I would actually suggest an option to keep the flashing bit on. Not everybody gets as anxious over that stuff.
  6. I just want to say I really don't get how others are complaining about getting too many sprains. I'm playing a new survival mode game and in 10+ in game days, my character has only gotten a sprain twice. One being a leg sprain while encumbered and traversing an obviously risky area and the second a wrist sprain from a wolf encounter that involved a knife and a neck injury as well. I have always personally thought that areas in game that most everybody else seems to think should be 100 percent safe are potentially risky. In real life there could be rocks, holes, sticks, animal bones, or especially ice, underneath the snow on a flatish area that you cannot see that you could trip over or slip on. I love that we get a sprain warning on some parts of big ol' fallen trees that we traverse because you never know if you could potentially slip off or maybe the structural integrity of the tree in a spot might be bad. I live in Washington, USA, in a city, and yet I get how certain seemingly innocent areas could be risky, especially when encumbered. IRL you could end up with a pack full of stuff that is not only heavy but might be packed in a way that would be unevenly distributed to the point that maybe in game the camera could be a little less steady to show it.
  7. You are definitely not alone. But I try to watch carefully for movement. I also have to watch for a moment to determine if far away animals like deer are moose or not.
  8. I normally play voyager or a custom game. However I believe the same applies to stalker. No idea about interloper. I can never survive more than 20 real time minutes.
  9. Most beds or bedroll plus the single layer on hands feet head torso and legs should be enough to overcome nighttime temps as long as you use decent stuff in good condition. Even outdoor locations shielded from wind and weather as long as the layers are dry. If those single pieces are wet or you aren't wearing anything you run the risk of frostbite or freezing to death more than without a good dry layer.
  10. I have a few rules. 1. Always dress down for sleeping. (1 Hat, 1 Sweater, Gloves, 1. Long Underwear, and 1 pair socks) This reduces how often I have to repair the clothing and also minimizes the chances of freezing to death. 2. Always check inventory and clothing selections before heading out. 3. Listen to your surroundings. ( This can be hard when I'm chatting with my friends on Xbox Party Chat. I usually don't play TLD while in party chat because of this issue.)
  11. What a brilliant challenge! I might try this someday... I never survive long when I try interloper. The wolves always get me within the first 15 minutes.
  12. The calm quiet. So many games are so busy and chaotic that I have a hard time focusing on the task at hand. I've also discovered that I love the sound of a winter storm in the wilderness because of this game.
  13. OP, I beg to differ. There are tons of additions to the game including several added challenges and story mode. I still haven't explored every part of any of the maps. I still haven't explored at least one and from what I understand as the episodes come out there may be more.. I consider the game a very high value for the price I paid. You're complaining about spending the equivalent of less than 10 US dollars on a game that was and is still in development as it was explicitly stated when you bought it in Early Access. In fact, we get more communication on how things are progressing on these forums for the game from Hinterland than you would probably get from any big developer. There are also many games offering far less for a much higher price. For pespective, a 1.5 hour movie costs more than that to watch in theaters these days and then it is over. No more entertainment. And you'd spend even more if you wanted snacks. That being said I haven't been playing much but I am one of those gamers who play a game for weeks and weeks all the time and then stop and start playing a different game for many weeks, then stop in favor of binge watching a TV show or movie series, or reading books, and then go back to playing games after weeks of not doing so. I actually played for about an hour when I got home. Then I ended up binge watching a show. Still fun though... Maybe if you are so tired of the game, go play another for a while or read a book about surviving the wilderness and come back to it later on.
  14. For a custom game maybe that would be a good idea. That being said, who is to say the in game characters are the same level of fitness. And IRL would you be traversing such steep slopes in snow?
  15. Just a couple questions for clarification: Are you paying attention to the sprain risk warning icon? Is your character encumbered? The sprain risk icon comes up when you are moving on an area that could potentially cause a sprain, however it does not seem to come up just from being encumbered. I'm still figuring out how that part works. Whether being encumbered means you run the risk of getting a sprain no matter whether the area you're moving on is a risk, or if it just means the chances are higher when moving in a sprain risk area. In the past I usually avoided sprains on really steep terrain by moving whilst crouched. Also, I've pointed out in threads about sprains before, that the cold and walking in snow, on uneven terrain (Because you can't know what is under that snow) that all of those conditions combined make sprains a risk... I think there should be an improvised splint or something that would slow you down but make it less likely to aggravate a sprain.
  16. Will this have the ability to regain condition lost due to frostbite?
  17. I left my xbox on when I left for work in anticipation of the update. I wish we had a change log to see now because I want to know ahead of time what all is changed. I'll be starting a new survival run when I get home.
  18. I keep getting to the spear myself but the moment I spot him getting ready too charge it's already too late to get in position to take him out... I know I can do it if I really focus but its one of those things... Getting to the spear alone makes me super nervous and me plus nervousness is a disaster waiting to happen.
  19. Something to do with the main objective involving a certain furry monster or so I read elsewhere... I can't figure out how to do the hidden text or else I'd have used it.
  20. I honestly had to consult this thread before I could make a decision as to whether to pull or push the knife. I'm not sure either action would have ended Hobbs' suffering from a medical point of view or killed him quickly. The fact he said he couldn't feel his legs, and looking at the fact there was evidence of him dragging himself inside in the way the blood smears were, I decided to do as he asked. There wouldn't be an immediate reward either way, and he'd be unlikely to hurt Grey Mother in the condition I left him in. I did however spend a few days at the farm as just afterward... Ended up with food poisoning and needed time to recover and get into a safe enough condition that would allow survival in the offchance that there was an unavoidable wolf encounter on the way back to the credit union and to Grey Mother. He didn't appear to be dead when I left, just passed out. If the knife had been a potential reward dependent on the decision made, that would have been useful as in total I had two wolf encounters later on and the shard became useless upon ending the second encounter. On the other hand, if the knife had been made useful, I think it should have required some serious cleaning before it could be safely used. After all, who knows if Hobbs was a carrier for any potential pathogens...
  21. I meant to say, natural whetstones. Clearly we can find some man made ones in game...
  22. I know that long term survival was never the goal for the game and that the sandbox was originally meant to be just a testing ground for the story mode, but is there any chance we might see the ability to find and/or create whetstones? I do love playing survival whilst I await story mode to be adjusted.
  23. Except for one major issue with that... The last bear I bagged, I read books while I waited for it to die...
  24. I had this happen with a wolf, except I didn't go into an interior loading area. I just decided to harvest a dear corpse that was nearby... All the bears I've shot in the most recent sandbox mode game have been kills and I've followed or stayed near while waiting for it to die.
