  1. It’s ambitious for sure. Nice suggestion. I like the variety of animals. Some people say that such variety will clutter the game. I think it can work if you limited the spawn to animal types. Today you see few caribou; come back later and and the caribou are gone but a moose is there, or maybe nothing. Give me a reason to look around. The next concern is crafting clothing. Under the current system it would be tough but I had a hide crafting idea that can be found on the wishlist. If clothing was crafted based on surface area instead of animal then this becomes more doable. @Admin Any chance of providing a latitude of GBI? This way player suggestions can be based around specific flora and fauna.
  2. I’d like to see Hinterland be more active with surveys. Maybe have a survey where the results are public. This way players know how the community feels about a subject in general. Also, do quarterly (maybe) surveys about specific mechanics. Or how about a monthly question for Hinterland. “Players what do you think about the current system that is used to control the weather? What would you add or take away?” Again, it’s difficult for players to not only see what has been suggested, but what has not. There could be more space for nuanced conversation if we knew from the start it was a serious consideration rather then the current forum system. I like the wishlist, I don’t want that taken away. That captures every idea. I’m suggesting a place to discuss specifics. So instead of a market place of ideas, an auditorium. If nothing comes of a subject one month, fine we’ll talk about it again in a year.
  3. I like the idea and would love to see it in game. But I also thinks it’s funny to think about the damn thing flashing 12:00 every time the aurora kicked off.
  4. Years ago I attended the AIARE (American Institute of Avalanche Research and Education) level 2 coarse. Avalanches are going to be hard to do well. I’m not saying it can’t be done, but, it might be difficult.
  5. I totally see what you’re trying to do. You’re right, some mechanic will have to be in place to stop an accidental snow feast. I wouldn’t do it the way you suggested but that fine. We can let Hinterland figure it out, after all, it’s literally their job. Overall, great ideas, let’s keep them coming. These are just ideas and if we don’t hear them all, we run the risk of missing out on some real gems.

    Season

I think seasons will be part of TLD2. If you search TLD2, you will find an article with the owner. If you read it and read between the lines, seasons are coming, just not to TLD. Many people will say,”It’s just a game.” I think every who plays this game knows it’s just a game. That doesn’t mean it gets a pass for not being realistic. It depends on what experience the player is looking for. A flight simulator is after all just a game. However, it can’t ignore physics. Nobody says,”Do we really need a cross wind, it’s too realistic, that’s not what this flight simulator is all about.” Players asking for realism are the same. The Harry Potter universe asks its viewers to believe everything. The Long Dark is different. It only asks us to believe in a magnetic storm. After that it’s a survival game. Then we might hear “That’s not The Long Dark”. Only the owner of Hinterland or someone that’s paid by him can say that. Anyway, I’m done with the soapbox if anyone else wants it.
  7. @LoneWolf5841. I think you are right, we should be able to eat snow. Like so many ideas here this addition on it’s own could be difficult, but, with some additional mechanics, it could work out well. Eating snow is all about short term gains and long term loss. It will hydrate you but at a greater hit to body temperature. If a body heat mechanic where introduced that had a greater heat output then it could work. I know Les Stroud advocates eating snow if you are traveling, so it could work. I also don’t think a container is required in order to do it either, but Hinterland can figure that out, we don’t have to. @UpUpAway95 Everything you are saying about eating snow is true. Eating snow is not a long term strategy to hydration. On the other hand, I don’t mind the player being able to screw themselves in the long term.
  8. Netflix had a documentary called “Happy People”. It’s a little slow at times but they show how traditional skis are made. Check it out if you get the chance.
  9. @UpUpAway95 I agree, they aren’t that detailed. But if I could have my wish, I’d want to rip the hide off an animal, mix a braining solution in a pot, and scrape the hide. I’m working on an idea for the fire system as well; stay tuned. If the ideas don’t get implemented for whatever reason, that’s fine. If a another game does it better than TLD I’ll play that instead. However, at the minute, TLD does it best. And it has a wishlist forum, where ever dream that I wish could come true (sorry Walt)...so long as I say it. Sorry, @DarKube we’re way off topic.
  10. @UpUpAway95 I take your point. My point is the mixing of volume and mass as interchangeable in the game. They are not. I do not want to see it take more time to produce water, only the use of more snow to get the same effect. I would like to see the character have to collect it like an item. The game does a good job at considering the specific heat capacity of water, and snow as well as the latent heat of fusion. I just want the magic water container wand to go away. I get there are other opinions; not everyone will agree. I’m approaching this from a mountaineering and engineering perspective. It seems we looking to get a different experience out of the game. That’s fine, we disagree.
  11. 1 liter of snow = 1 liter of water yet snow is on average 15% water.
  12. @UpUpAway95 Not what I had in mind, but thanks for bringing it up since it will allow me to clarify. The time to boil water wouldn’t have to change. Since, you have less water it would boil much faster. The player could either add more snow or boil what they have.
  13. I’ve been thinking about how snow and water is used and presented in TLD. It has been said before but I’ll say it again; where do all the water bottles come from? Also, why does 2 liters of snow produce 2 liters of water? Since snow is typically 5-25% water shouldn’t I get about .3 liters of water when melting snow in a pot? So, the suggestion is this: add liquid carrying containers to the game and make water and tea more like fuel for the lantern. This is nothing new but hang on, there is more. Add a canteen, a thermos, and a tea kettle. The tea kettle benefit would be to bring non-potable water to a boil in half the time. Since you can’t store water in a dresser drawer remove that ability. A canteen can go in the drawer with water in it, but not just water. However, allow snow and water to be kept in containers like plastic bins and trash cans. If the container is inside and it’s over 0C then I should be able to look inside and see snow changing to non-potable water. No stove required. It’s going to take time obviously but thinking ahead now will pay off. Canteens could also freeze while full damaging them. A half full canteen that freezes will not get damaged but you can’t drink ice... So while this makes water making easier in some ways, it could add difficulty in others. Overall, I think it adds to immersion.
  14. I completely agree. This isn’t a situation where we are competing against an opponent and balance is required. In fact asymmetric advantages are the reason so people live and some people die in a survival situation.
  15. In my opinion, same goes for spears. Sharp stick spear, improvised (crap sharp metal) spear head, primitive (flint) spear head, forged spear head. Treat spears, knives, hatchets, and arrowheads all the same way.
  16. If I could pull out my crystal ball... I think, TLD2 will be a continuation of the story after CH5 of TLD is all wrapped up. Since, I’m on it and have no real or official information, allow me speculate wildly! I’m thinking most of the ideas in this wish list aren’t actually being looked at to implement into TLD; they are primarily for THL2. Based on nothing but hope, I think seasons and a more complex survival game will be coming next. And why not? A deep, complex, non-zombie, non-cannibal survival game would unique and awesome! If I’m completely wrong, I’ll be hanging out till it’s obvious it is not coming, and play a more immersive, more realistic survival if and when someone else makes it. Either way, I can’t lose.
  17. I agree with you. I’d like to see a body heat mechanic rather then the current “feels like” mechanic. The current system is based on adding heat from clothing, where as, clothing only traps heat that a person is making. But you are right on I think, a “too hot” mechanic should be added.
  18. @Sir Loin1557 OK, I can see that. When you said resort I got a different picture in my mind, but a run down small scale type of thing...why not?
  19. I like the idea for what it is. I’m not sure how to add it to Great Bear without it feeling “off”. What I mean is, the resort would be huge, but Great Bear is supposed to be in decline, with no real economic opportunities for the denizens. Do you have any ideas for how to square the two? Unfortunately, I’ve got nothing.
  20. Wolverines, Marten, Ptarmigan, Geese.
  21. (IRL) Before I head out, I’ll make myself “chaos candles”, cotton balls slathered in Vaseline. Waterproof outside, dry on the inside, and burns well after you tear them open. Great for ferro rods because, like you said, they aren’t easy. Probably too much to ask for in TLD, but hey, worth a shot.
  22. Sounds like an oversight to me. How does a firestriker give you a better chance of starting a fire over an open flame?
  23. Thanks for your thoughts. I know it’s just a game but I’m in favor of realism at every decision point. I wonder how much of the community is the same way? You’re right, IRL you would be able to make clothing from any cloth. So, I think it should be in game. I would also be in favor of braining the hides rather then just leaving them inside. There could even be a mini-game where you mix your braining solution like the cake baking games my kids play; I’m all for it. The game wouldn’t qualify you to be a primitive skills instructor any more then my kids are able to bake a cake. But like I said, realism at every turn. I know I’m not going to get everything I want, for a variety of reasons, but even a few of them would be awesome for players like me. In the end Hinterland gets to decide what should go in the game. I’d rather throw and idea out there that I’m not even in love with then have never let it be considered.
  24. @Avril Sounds good. I’m going to try it this winter but I’ll keep my goggles with me just in case. My wife will have to guide me around if this all goes wrong😄. I think it is probably true for emergencies but for a permanent solution...; I won’t know till I try.
  25. @UpUpAway95 I think we agree and I thought that’s how I wrote it. For an in-game solution maybe that is a way to implement it. Also snow blindness is only a problem during the day. At night there is no risk. So, it only shifts when the player would choose to be outside, provided the don’t have eye protection.
