  1. Chicory was added to coffee during hard times as filler, since it does taste a bit like coffee - but it does not contain caffeine at all. Also I think the developers have stayed away from any plant root items because of the frozen ground. For a short term energy boost maybe hot chocolate packets?
  2. I was thinking that when you harvest certain small, brightly colored clothing items like the Wool Scarf or the Fleece Mittens you could could have a choice to either get the standard cloth OR get "tags" (maybe 2x as many tags as you would have gotten cloth). These tags could be combined - via the camp craft menu - with either 1 stick or 3 rocks to make a small vertical marker that would be more prominent than simply dropping an item flat on the ground. They would degrade, but slowly. You could NOT use tags for anything else - not mending or bandages, so you would have to make judicious choices. Bonus thought: if you mapped an area AFTER you dropped a tag it would show up on the map, but only after a fresh mapping event, it would not show up automatically.
  3. Maybe a one-shot on December 21/22 the night of the Winter Solstice?
  4. Folks have been asking for some sort of meat preservation mechanic so consistently that I'd bet that it will happen eventually, though probably only in survival mode. I'm sure Hinterland is taking all due time and care to make sure it fits into the game properly in terms of both balance and tone. Look how long it took to be able to break down campfires (and that is a purely aesthetic fix), but enough people asked, so it happened.
  5. At this point I think it would be fair if Hinterland put out a "last call" to the initial Kickstarter backers with a set deadline. Any cairns unclaimed after the deadline could be opened up to current players. Maybe a mini-game/quest within the next 4DON to earn a cairn? Are there any cairns in Bleak Inlet?
  6. I really like the idea of location-specific species. Large as it is Great Bear is an island so species that need more specialized environments would be more localized. Beaver don't hibernate so they would be around (just more active at night). A medium sized protein source and a highly water-resistant pelt would be a nice addition. Plus what is more Canadian than a Beaver? Neat article: https://www.pri.org/stories/2016-06-03/vancouvers-former-olympic-village-now-home-urban-beavers
  7. This bit of added complexity is what I'm hoping for in the future for the cooking mechanic. Being able to combine food items into simple recipes would add a nice bit of verisimilitude to the game.
  8. I think this is a great topic, please post more!
  9. Jamaica! Then I moved to Wisconsin and I love it. My family thinks I'm crazy.
  10. Good thing I searched before making a new topic Here are my thoughts on the porcupine: Porcupines - more common in deepest wilderness areas. Primarily nocturnal, stay close to dens in winter. What makes them interesting? They pose more danger to your equipment than your body. They will reduce condition of leather and wood items left outside. Also could be a source of an animal-unique condition “quill-riddled”: Very painful and time consuming to heal, BUT no infection risk (Porcupines actually have antibiotics in skin and quills to protect themselves from self-inflicted jabs!). This could be a very rare animal that is a relatively easy kill but provides a safe, high calorie meat. Quills could be collected, for strictly decorative purposes. From Alaska Dept of Fish and Game website “The porcupine can be easily approached and killed with a club because of its plodding gait. This trait has saved the lives of hungry Natives, trappers, and miners in times past. For this reason, although the hunting season is open all year with no bag limit, many people do not kill porcupines without cause. Some people find the meat too strong, but in some areas of the state, porcupines with their heavy layer of fat are considered a delicacy.”

    Map Markers

That is a great idea! I was thinking of something similar - instead of numbers a small set of icons so you could "stamp" a spot on the map.

    Seeds

Not possible to grow a plant to maturity, but it could be possible to sprout seeds in a jar for a small dose of greens. If the jar was properly positioned in one of the cabins that stays warm without a fire and had glass windows and there was a 2-3 day stretch of clear weather. I doubt it would be worth implementing unless the devs do decide to go with a longer-term "nutrition mechanic" i.e. scurvy, which they have said they have no plans for at the moment.
  13. One additional sleep option I would like to see is the ability to harvest fir branches to create sleeping pads inside caves or mines. These already exist in the plane crash cave and I've found at least one other one. Being able to craft those would be a nice option without going overboard.
  14. I started out as (and still am) a tabletop RPG player and came to video games relatively late in life. The Long Dark is on a very short list of video games I play over and over again. Have you ever considered working with a tabletop company to make a Long Dark pen-and-paper game? If you were going to pick an existing tabletop system to use as a starting point for a Long Dark pen-and-paper game which one would you pick? Thanks for crafting such a unique experience!
  15. Does not have to be a successful ski resort. A schlocky resort that leaned in hard to all the "up north" stereotypes and failed miserably would be alternatively amusing and exasperating and be an interesting footnote in the history of Great Bear.

    Salt & Jerky

We already have a coding template for the smoker in the snow shelter. You would need three or four saplings, either cured gut or line and two or three deer pelts to construct. Pelts and guts are pretty common mid-late game, but the saplings would be the limiting factor. (If you want to be really harsh require a fishhook and line to suspend over the smoke.) Then cut cedar wood and spend time processing it into chips for smoking. The smoker would last longer than a snow shelter but still degrade with time and use.
  17. Boot liners made out of rabbit felt would be a good "DIY" option for the sock clothing slots. For crafting you wouldn't need a workbench, but would need a knife and a cooking pot +fuel and water, and long, long processing time.

    Blue Jays

I don't think these little guys have been suggested before. Blue Jays - They are foragers who search for seeds, berries and insects around the trees. They spend the late summer and fall months caching food around their habitat, often covering it up with leaves or brush, for retrieval during the winter months when resources are scarce. They have an incredible memory for remembering the locations of their caches In addition to addicting a tiny flash of color on the landscape they could be another source of plan'-based food - but the player has to decide if the calories expended tracking the bird is more or less than the potential calories gained. Also, is the Jay heading towards a cache, or away from it?? Follow Jay to find cache containing 1-4 “seed clumps” each worth ~1 granola bar’s worth of calories. May collect fallen feathers like crows (maybe slightly better for arrows? that would be reasonable??)
  19. I've been playing since Episode 1 first came out and I really enjoy seeing how the game has developed. I think having a few more plant-based food items would add some more variety, especially since they expanded the cooking system. Mostly I'm thinking of more ways to really "live off the land" in more remote areas, instead of relying on scavenged food from towns. I tried to keep it simple - no full on recipes (though I hope we get to that point someday). Maple Seeds - Visual should be a dried bunch on a branch to indicate you have gathered a lot at once. Long processing time (shelling). Boil in 0.5L or more H20 (warmth bonus) OR roast on campfire rocks or stovetop (no H2O, faster cooking time, no warmth bonus). Those maple saplings have to be coming from somewhere! Eaten raw = Indigestion. Calories ~ Candy or Granola Bar Lingonberry (or other member of cranberry family) - Berries in this family stay on the shrub all year (shrub is evergreen, lower to ground than roses) and the flavor actually improves from being frozen. Can be eaten raw or cooked (warmth bonus) in container to increase quality. Calories ~ Can of Peaches. Golden Chantrelle Mushroom - Found on trunks of fallen trees. Must be cooked in container with 0.5L or more H2O (warmth bonus). Eaten raw = Indigestion. Calories ~ Candy or Granola Bar Dulse Seaweed - Only found on seashore. Must be cooked in container with 0.5L or more H2O (warmth bonus). Eaten raw = Indigestion. Calories ~ Cattail Stalk (may cook up to 4 in cooking pot with 0.5L per unit) Watercress - Only found by waterfalls. Deteriorates very rapidly. At 20% or more quality can be used as deer/rabbit bait. Eaten raw, no processing. ~50kcal. Parsnips and Leeks - found in root cellars of remote houses. Heavy for the amount of calories gained. Must be processed (peel and/or chop) with knife. Must be cooked: either roasted on rock/grill or in container with 0.5L or more H2O per veg (warmth bonus). Eaten raw = Indigestion. Calories ~200kcal. New Ailment: Indigestion Primarily caused by eating plant food raw that needs to be cooked, also low quality plant food or plant-based food. Low quality plant-based scavenged food such as crackers and granola bars also have chance to cause indigestion. Symptoms: pain and nausea, slows movement, affects aim. Cured by rest or Fir Needle tea. On par with pain from sprains, not deadly like food poisoning. Fir Needle Tea - Processed. Warming bonus (as other teas). Also cures Indigestion.
