  1. Also, some good stuff in these previous threads:
  2. The dumbest way I've died that was not (strictly speaking) "my fault:" Instant kill-walls while goating in an otherwise safe looking area (so no, I'm not talking about trying to goat down cliff faces at Raven Falls Ravine). There are at least six spots that I know of where kill-walls just "are." The dumbest location I remember finding a kill-wall was on the rock formation just behind the trailer at the Train Unloading area in Coastal Highway. As for dumb ways I've died that where absolutely my fault: When I first started playing TLD in the later part of 2014, I made all the misstates and stupid deaths that any new player makes... but I think one of the most memorable examples would be:
  3. @bysinda The Demon Bear, from Wintermute (episode 2) and The Hunted Challenge (parts 1, 2, soon part 3). It's a particularly nasty bear that seemingly cannot be killed by bullets or arrows... and seems only to be taken down with the Bear Spear. And the Demon Wolves were from the old 4DoN Halloween events.
  4. @GothSkunk You know, I'd welcome this sort of thing as a Custom Settings option. Not only just a Darkwalker "threat presence" option for custom survival, but also perhaps the same option for the Demon Bear, or even the Demon Wolves from 4DoN.
  5. @Just some guy being a dude I don't know that it would make a good poll. There are so many different ways to go about a hunt. =================== But now back to the question at hand: Under most circumstances, I like to hunt more out in the open, going more "toe-to-toe" as it were. I will usually approach until the bear spots me and starts stalking. I'll then use myself as bait and lure the bear to where it will be more convenient for me to harvest the carcass. In other words, I lure the bear to me and then I control where the skirmish takes place. When the bear is more or less in the area I want it... I'll get low and let it stalk closer. The idea is to get into "charging range," so that when I take the first shot... if that doesn't drop it, then it will charge me rather than flee. If the first shot doesn't knock it down... then I take the additional shot(s) while it's charging at me. On average (whether it's a moose or a bear) it only usually takes 1-2 shots to take down large game. That's how I hunt bear on Great Bear Island.
  6. Further explanation and demonstration of the exploit:
  7. As recently as yesterday... The match condition exploit is still in play.
  8. Early this morning, I picked up Woodwright's Bow, the two arrows I'd found, the arrow crafting stuff I'd found, refilled my storm lantern, and set out to leave Hushed River Valley... I was able to manage navigating the cave without using my lantern... I figured it would be best to try and conserve lantern fuel. I know I'll have the opportunity to pickup more supplies from my encampments I've left along the way, but still... I'd rather not use up any resources if I don't really need to. Once I arrived in Mountain Town, I decided to take the safest... and reasonably direct route between my secondary and primary encampments before heading onward to Mystery Lake. Ah, Mystery Lake... It always feels like a Homecoming whenever I come back here. However, this was not much time before nightfall... and the weather had been threatening a blizzard since I'd made it to the limbing area back in Mountain Town. I had to finish the hard push for the Camp Office. The Trapper's Homestead, always a site for sore eyes... but I'd have to visit there some other time. Hmm... two wolves prowling by the train tracks. I'll have to take the route past Dead Fall. I'm already exhausted from the climbs on the way out of Moutain Town. Wiser, I think to just give them a wide berth and walk on by. A wolf to my left (heading towards me), there ahead was the Dead Fall cabin (or at least what's left of it). It was getting darker rather quickly... but the weather was holding. The Mystery Lake Camp Office... always feels as welcoming as an old friend. I felt my way upstairs in the dark, found my familiar warm bed, ate, drank, and quickly fell into a deep sleep. I'll do a quick sort and stow in the morning. I want to leave the bow and arrows here for another time. For the journey to Bleak Inlet... I'm still determined to go without any weapons at all.
  9. Today's the day. I decided I was going to start out this morning from Hushed River Valley, and that I wouldn't rest until I reached the Camp Office back on Mystery Lake.
  10. Well, the lore in Wintermute suggests that it's at least sometime well beyond September 2012: Beyond this I don't think we get any specified dates that are more current... because that note on the door of the Milton Credit Union is clearly pretty old. If the note and Grey Mother are to be believed... then we might be looking at the "present" in Wintermute being maybe sometime as recently as 2022... and we know that Survival takes place sometime after Wintermute. Other lore references: So, even though we don't have a good idea of exactly "when" we are. We know that Great Bear Island has been "falling apart" since 2012, and even before that the island was pretty remote and cut off even at the best of times. Lots of old stuff around, and the occasional early 2000's plasma/LCD (even the occasional laptop) would be present but relatively uncommon... while CRT TVs and monitors abound, along with other analog devices and equipment. Also, reasonable given the poor/unreliable power grid after the loss of the Carter Dam operation... and the probable reliance on personal Generators in parts outside of maybe Milton, Perseverance Mills, and Blackrock Pen - thought we know Blackrock did also have its own electrical plant.
  11. No, it doesn't ever hurt to ask for feedback. Even if they had no plans on implementing a thing (wishlist or otherwise), they've had no qualms about saying so in the past. On this topic they'd already mentioned that the team was considering it (and looking at similar types of accessibly options) @Leeanda was just asking if there were any updates on the topic at all from their end.
  12. @DIA Welcome to the wilderness.
  13. @Admin Has there by chance been any indication from the team on whether this is something that's in the works? Has the team given any indication as to the list of possible Accessibility Options they are working on or considering?
  14. It is possible. A long time ago, the Deer would always run "away" from us, but I think that was changed to be a bit more random because folks would push deer and rabbits and use them as a wolf shield (forcing them to "scout" ahead and sacrificed to any wolf skulking nearby). While that still can be done... it's a bit more difficult these days because it seems like the deer just sort of pick a random direction to flee in when they get spooked (we can't as reliably push them in a particular direction as easily as we used to). Also, the same thing happens to wolves when they flee... which is terrifying! It's very unnerving when I hit a wolf with a stone, it starts fleeing in fear... but it looks like it's charging right for my face... only to have it bolt right past me instead. (more to OPs point) So while it's certainly possible for Hinterland to change or update the behavior, but given that we have Wolves, Timberwolves, Bears, Moose, and now a Cougar on the way... I feel like we have enough unreasonably hostile wildlife on our hands without having to worry about whether deer are going to start goring us next.
  15. There are generally just a couple of games that I have in rotation at a time from my admittedly rather extensive library (very much dependent on mood and what hits right at the time), but TLD is by far the anchor.
  16. I love that detail... also good science, thank you.
  17. Someone mentioned this belonged here as well. Conventional Wisdom: My response:
  18. After careful consideration, I decided I would challenge the meme... I intend to take on and explore Bleak Inlet in its entirety. However, I will not bring any weapons at all with me for defense against the Timberwolves. I know I can evade an avoid all the Timberwolf packs except for in the cannery itself. The cannery compound will be the biggest hurdle... and escaping that area will likely be the deadliest risk. Looking forward to it.
  19. The next region on the list for going down Memory Lane: Bleak Inlet. ... 🤔 ... I have a plan...
  20. I ended up having to spend the night at my primary encampment, but early the next morning went to finish exploring the Ice Caves. The weather was feeling a bit rough and threatening a blizzard, so I went back to take another two-hour nap. Thankfully, the weather cleared. Seems that Scruffy wasn't home today... Which I'm thankful for. This would have been a really tricky space to try and evade and avoid in. I did head back to check on the Memento Cache (some useful materials but not really notable for my purposes on this run). Headed back down to my primary encampment at the cave near Stairsteps Lake to a final sort and stow. Now, it's just time to get ready to head out of the region tomorrow.
  21. @Leeanda We're on a lore tangent... so it's only natural to want to theorize.
  22. Absolutely... so even though we don't have a good idea of when we are.
