  1. Technically this should go in Misc Topics but no-one ever goes there . If this looks familiar, it is, there's an archived thread like this and it seems like a good way to pass time while waiting for the next Dev Diary. I was wondering what stories are behind our choices of usernames and/or profile pictures... I'll start: mine is pretty simple. Just Conan, which is my name, and jaguar, which has been my favorite big cat since I was about five years old, and has been my email address for as long as I've had email, which is why it's lowercase . I've used it as my handle for just about everything because I'm sentimental like that.
  2. @KingFuzz You can also pull off this trick with a lantern if you're really desperate. According to the wiki it gives a +3C warmth bonus.
  3. Not specifically for ZoC, but with a bit of practice you can light a fire just about anywhere if you can find a sheltered spot. Trees, rocks, and cliffs will do quite nicely; just pour on the fuel and pray the wind doesn't shift!
  4. I agree with @UTC-10 and @Looper: if there's going to be anything like a nightclub, Perseverance Mills would be the place for it. Milton might have had a bar at one point but it probably burned down with most of the other buildings; all that booze is very flammable .
  5. That has to be the only time I've seen a death screen from @ManicManiac! You're supposed to be immortal!
  6. Vincent 13 / Day 2 / Damn the Blizzard, Full Speed Ahead! I awake rather too early in the morning for my tastes. I can hear the shingles rattling from the blizzard outside... but I'm not really worried about that. It's just a short walk to the little barn but I'm already freezing when I make it. Crossing my fingers, I traverse the planks and search the loft. SCORE!!! I find the rabbit hat! I was starting to think it was all just a dream that one time... I snooze in the hay for a little bit before peeking outside. The storm has subsided but it's still cold. I munch a 'noller bar and ponder my options. I'm good on water for now thanks to toilets but I need matches and food, food first. I decide to head to Signal Hill; it usually has pretty good loot. I take the rope-climb route because it's quicker and arrive at Signal Hill in record time. I think I hear ol' Grouchy and so I am cautious, but he never shows himself. I loot the building for some good food, a prybar, and a box of herbal tea... I think I may have found a hacksaw as well but it's hazy and might well be a dream; I've had a lot of those lately. Unfortunately I don't find any matches so I snooze for a bit, goat-sprint down the cliff, and sleep in the big red barn. I found a stim there so that's nice!
  7. The new cooking system, even though I never get around to making any of the recipes 😁. It just feels right to know that I can use it if I want to...
  8. Vincent 3 was killed by a wolf just outside of Orca Gas Station on Day 2 Vincents 4-12 started in HRV, AC, DP, and TWM and were all suicided. Then, as I teetered on the verge of insanity, Vincent 13 was born... Vincent 13 / Day 1 / For Old Time's Sake Pleasant Valley in as pleasant weather as it gets here. Finally, FINALLY, a spawn that I can survive. I'm not quite certain where I am but I soon get my bearings thanks to a bridge and make the trek over to the Farmhouse. It's mostly uneventful. Looting the Farmhouse, I find a bunch of goodies, including some food, a can opener, sewing kit, toilet water, and most importantly, a Mackinaw Jacket! SCORE!!! I tear down curtains on the spot and repair it up to 100%. State of the badass art. By this time I'm exhausted and its late, although not my preferred bedtime. I eat peaches and syrup for supper and hit the sack.
  9. I've noticed that as well but it's probably a different issue. Maybe the lifespan and spawning rates overlap each other or more possibly the stick spawn locations don't check to see if there's already a stick there...
  10. I don't think this is a bug, you just happened to be in the right place at the wrong time . I haven't dug around in the code to confirm this yea or nay but I'm fairly certain that sticks (and stones, limbs, etc) have a given "lifespan" and when that lifespan expires, they delete themselves. This was probably meant as a counter to an older bug that I've heard rumors of that caused hundreds of sticks to accumulate over time.
  11. Vincent 3 / Day 1 / I'm Back, Baby! I snap to consciousness in an instant. Forlorn Muskeg, late morning, and the weather stinks; thick snowfall and fog limit visibility. It promises to turn into a blizzard, but I know exactly what to do and where to go; I could probably find my way from this spawn point in a blizzard. Picking cattails, I make my way to the High Blind, where I take the usual firewood, scrap metal, and a can of sardines. Very welcome at this stage, if only for the "juice". The weather turns even worse; as soon as I take a bearing for the Bunkhouses and set out for them, a blizzard blows up. I panic for a bit. Not because I'm lost, but because a wolf has picked up my scent. I sprain my wrist while dashing up the slope to the welcome shelter of the bunker. At best, it's a treasure trove; at worst, it's a warm bed. For the 27th time, it is a warm bed, nothing more. Rrrrgh. I inhale my sardine juice and grab a few hours of sleep for the next leg of the journey. It's going to be a loooong day. It's evening when I poke my head out from the bunker. Despite the yellowish fog, temperatures are firmly in the "minus two" range. A wolf, presumably the same one, notices me immediately. I goat-sprint down the cliff and make it to Spence's intact, I'm getting pretty good at this. There are no matches but I take the coal and down vest before sleeping an hour to warm up. I unfortunately forget to get the dog food in my haste, but my next two stops at the burnt-out house and barrel shed are well worth it. I find a hockey jersey and a wool toque, both in good condition! Wolves pick me up once again shortly after this. I sprint to the Poacher's Camp and use the flare to light the fire barrel. Warm at last! I make and drink two cups of Reishi tea, pull some torches, and head back out. My torches are immediately extinguished, of course, but fortunately no wolves decide to capitalize on that fact and I am able to make it to Mystery Lake safely. Freezing and thirsty, I arrive at Trappers, where I sleep an hour to warm up and save. It's been a rough day but it's not over yet. I need water!
  12. I should think that 4 pieces of coal and a stick would do quite nicely .
  13. Is there a difference between activated charcoal and just plain charcoal from a campfire? Probably so...
  14. What you need: scrap metal, a heavy hammer, some cloth, and some coal for the forge. Where to find forges: FM, DP, BR, FA(?)
  15. @Pyroxene Greetings from the land of Dixie!
