  1. Obviously it wasn't or I wouldn't be replying but Geomagnetic Storms strong enough to cause the events to occur as they did in the long dark are rare the last one that big occurred on September 2, 1859 it was good that it happened then as electricity wasn't so wide spread making it fairly easy to recover from. It really only effected the telagram making it work when disconnected as it was powered from what they called "Auroral Current" if it happens today then we might see the events of the long dark as irl electrical infrastructure would be completely ruined around the world with only simple electronics being powered by the so called Auroral Current. computers and smart phones (and other sensitive electronics) probably wouldn't work as they have sensitive components and I'm sure they would just be completely fried not to mention the internet would be destroyed. Still it takes a powerful geomagnetic storm to cause any worry and those aren't common we really only get small ones that may slightly interfere with communication but nothing major.
  2. Lol I wonder how we are sticking that cloth to the bedroll hmm this seems like an oversight on hinterlands part I don't think you're supposed to be able to repair the bedroll without a sewing kit (or fishing tackle).
  3. Wait you're telling me I don't need a sewing kit to repair bedrolls? Oh my how many sewing kits did I waste.
  4. Oh this would be fantastic maybe your survivor passively warns you by saying "looks like a storm is coming I better prepare" then the build up of gathering enough food, water and wood to ride out this great storm and the satisfaction after making it through would be so fun. It reminds me of the Whiteout challenge which is probably my favorite challenge just the build up for the storm was so fun as I had a set goal to accomplish. I'm with this 100%
  5. Haha our survivors are going to be so time disoriented
  6. I agree this is a big reason I'm against it it's a big heavy item for a task I don't see doing much with I would rather deal with the decrease in warmth than lug a heavy chainsaw it's the reason I suggested a lighter option, the Carpenters hammer. As for fuel like I said before that already appear to be planned as you can open gas caps on some cars. (considering you could remove car batteries long before the addition of ammo crafting) If they hold true to the past it means that they have something planned for the gas in cars even if it's just for a source of accelerant for fire. More in likely though and my current belief is it will be used for something in wintermute maybe we will create something that requires fuel?
  7. Well I assume there is gas in some plus I remember Will asking why everyone left on foot and didn't drive out in wintermute and grey mother said that the cars just stopped working this would imply that some cars still have gas though it has been a while since I played Episode 1 of wintermute so I could be mistaken but I remember hearing this.
  8. I like this but question, does it really need the battery? I say this because the car lights and radios work even after you remove the car battery. As long as there is an Aurora active then power works with or without a battery. Everything can be unplugged during an Aurora and it will still be powered, kinda like how the massive geomagnetic storm that occurred in real life on September 2, 1859 (the Aurora could be seen as far south as the equator during this storm). There wasn't much electrical items back then but the telegraph existed and it worked during that Storm, even after being unplugged (it did cause the telegram poles to short and spark so they had to disconnect them to save the equipment) During this storm they were able to send a telegram across continents. The air itself pretty much became the cable and the suns energized particles ionized the air and powered the telegraph while disconnected. This was called "Auroral Current''. If you don't know, the telegraph wasn't wireless. Each one had to be connected through a network of cables and these cables didn't cross the ocean. These cables is how the information traveled to the various telegraph offices in a specific country.
  9. If hinterland added a chainsaw then they would add gas as an item. Though chainsaw or not gas does appear planned to be added eventually as the gas tank cap for cars can be opened and if we all remembered you could remove batteries from some cars way before the ability to scrape them for lead was added. So my guess is gas as an item is coming what it will be used for though is the question.
  10. I wouldn't be inclined to get them if they aren't repairableb as it's just extra weight, so I'll probably end up leaving them behind till patched.
  11. I assumed the animation would last as long as the eating circle does also I don't eat all the time I only eat before going to bed. It's wasteful to try to keep well fed, the lost of condition from starving is easily restored if you go to bed with just enough calories for the duration slept. I only try to keep my temp, fatigue and water from hitting red during day as for food it's not important.
  12. Yes there is though he gives survival tips every now and then this was just one of those survival tips just to show that it is an option he did say if you don't have access to water. I've also seen Les eat snow in colder environments. Edit- though if I remember correctly he didn't eat the snow for hydration he ate it to keep his body temperature down to prevent sweating while he worked cause as he always say in cold environments is "you sweat, you die" Here is the official video it basically the same as what I showed earlier but from the official channel
  13. He may have stopped playing but new players still may find this thread so it's still relevant and will always be relevant.
  14. Okay so I decided to probably poorly explain a few of the basic mostly the menus and how to get there slash navigate them there is controls that you can refer to in game but here they are if you want to see them nowif on ps4 If on Xbox If on PC I play ps4 only so I had to look up Xbox and PC so it may be outdated As for the menus I made them into pictures with explanations as it was a lot to type without physically showing so prepare for a long list of images. Hopefully it's easy to read as some text gets small. Edit just noticed the above screenshot says "press L1/LB or L1/LB" ignore that second L1/LB. status and the map can be accessed through the radial menu and the drop decoy option can be done outside of the radial menu on console you press down on the D-Pad on PC you press 4. Done hopefully this helps with the menus I didn't show all the menu for example the fire, forge, or workbench menus mostly because my fingers are hurting due to typing and sharefactory on ps4 being not so easy to use but also because I believe the other menus are relatively self explanatory. like I said before I exclusively play PS4 so the controls for PC may be off (Xbox should be similar to ps4 other than the difference names for buttons) I used the PC controls image I showed early as a reference. I'm also generally bad at explaining things so it still may be confusing. Either way I highly recommend to give the game not just 2 chances but multiple chances once you get the hang of the controls it is really a fantastic survival game that can give you a ton of enjoyment if you like survival games.
  15. I actually like this though it's purely visual it would increase immersion. The question is how hard would it be to implement as the animations would have to look natural or it could hurt immersion instead of improve it. I'm definitely not against it though if hinterland can do it I'm all for it.
  16. Oh definitely hinterland probably could find a better way my container suggestion was just the solution I thought of first
  17. I mean I'm for buildings slowly degrading over time making them ultimately colder than the beginning this would increase challenge I'm just not for the addition of the chainsaw maybe instead of a chainsaw the tool would be a Carpenters hammer and instead of planks you just use nails that are made at a forge.

    Season

Just did some research here is the article I found https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.gamesindustry.biz/amp/2019-10-31-hinterlands-future-plans-include-movies-publishing-and-the-long-dark-2 Interesting this would ultimately ruin my explanation of why the long dark is forever winter but shoot if they add seasons to TLD2 I'm all for the increased realism.
  19. Now that you mention it I remember an episode where Les eats snow, for those who doesn't know, Les Stroud is an expert survivalist that had a show called survivorman for the ones interested here is one clip where he talks about eating snow. The container is more so you don't accidentally click on the snow and accidentally eat it.
  20. The snow must be a drug to our survivor they are obviously addicted to it 🤣 on a more serious note I agree that would be a nice source as well and would ultimately increase immersion. I always use them if I have them on me but it's rare. I usually just ignore them as I would much rather just multitask while boiling water. If these extra sources of water was added I would definitely be more inclined to use them as I wouldn't want to make a fire if I don't have to.

    Season

No it isn't realistic but the point isn't to be realistic the point is to survive. Like I said previously with the way the game is now it would have to be rebuilt from the ground up in order to have seasons, it won't happen in the long dark the only way I see this in in another game hinterland makes but in this game seasons wouldn't work and in my opinion would ruin the feel of the long dark, try to do what I do come up with a reason why it's forever Winter. My reasoning is the same geomagnetic storm that messes up the power has also screwed up the seasons somehow this reasoning has helped me overlook the fact that seasons never change maybe it'll help you as well?
  22. Yes it would still be boilable but ultimately I would use the water purification tablets just so I can use them, always leave them behind like why did they add them there is no way to get nonpotable water without a fire they're pointless. For the toilet suggestion yes I agree I actually made a thread on this I'll quote what I said there
  23. It isn't lore friendly, you can tell by playing the whole no power thing is the issue. the spark plug can't produce a spark as somehow the geomagnetic storm disrupts power only for it to partly be restored during the Aurora so if it's added it would behave like the flashlight useless most of the time only to function during the Aurora, which only occurs at night. Also even if it was lore friendly it would still be kinda useless as there isn't a reason to repair your cabin for warmth as most interior structures are already above freezing at the start of the game.
  24. Hmm now that's a whole other conversation why can't we do that in game it's effectively another source of water that skips the need of a fire and gives water purification tablets a better use.
  25. I will agree yes it's best to stay on topic. I mean no offense but your reply already went off topic a bit as you was talking about how hinterland handled custom mode the original topic was about 4DON only which has nothing to do with survival mode or custom mode really. The whole quote section below is off topic already. Nonetheless I agree that this shouldn't go off topic more than it already has.
