Welcome back😊.
Well ...there's a bridge in that mine that makes the ravine seem like a motorway.... It's terrifying ... Once was definitely enough for me lol..
I call that the Balrog Pit.

I do hope they make it more durable.

Now that salt has been introduced into the game, I think it's time that salt can be used as a meat preservation tool.
I'd like to see the fishing shacks on Coastal Highway, for example, be used not only for fishing purposes, but also to dip seawater out of those fishing holes, the water which
then is boiled on the woodstove in the fishing shack creating sea salt as the water is boiled off. Without getting off into a tangent of water salinity, let's just say that 10 liters of water boiled off yields .25kg of salt and that would be enough salt to preserve roughly 10kg of meat.I think the process would add some immersion to the game and also provide an additional element to the game play. I imagine it would take some considerable effort and time prepping for a salt crafting experience. Firewood would have to be collected and hauled out to the shacks and then there is the time spent boiling water then scrapping the empty pot of the salt crystals. The cooking utensils themselves would take damage over time and eventually fail, so all those empty cans would now have a new use besides being fabricated into bangers.
I must have a mod that enables this (not sure which one!). Occasionally, I find Halite, to which I can use a heavy hammer to break it down into salt, which in turn gives me a "salt" option on meats (I've never actually used it).
Your idea @piddy3825 seems very reasonable, I'm just not sure how much I would use it. After all, it sounds like it would consume a LOT of wood to boil down enough water to get a small amount of salt; although, HL could "tweak" reality in that aspect. With us eating practically anything at lvl 5 cooking combined with existing cooking of meat, I just see it as a "cool, lets try this" and then never do it again mechanic. Just my opinion.

@dave1122, glad to hear re-install partially solved the problem. I'm curious, if you start a new game now, do you also experience the crashes in that new game? Trying to determine if it's something to do with your save.
Do you experience these issues with other games?

Water handling
You would also need to consider the boiling of the water to kill bacteria.

Yeah, I had to have a separate notepad to track them when I did it.

when I went thru' the ice (thankfully not with the loaded travois).
Has anyone broke through ice while pulling the travois? Do you drop it where you fell in the ice? I certainly hope not - would likely be irretrievable.

I am not sure about that. Making it harder to harvest fresh carcass without sharp tool makes sense but making it impossible doesn't imo.
Or, they could have increased the harvest time if harvesting by hand.

Have you tried a complete uninstall and reinstall of the game? After that, if it still occurs, try a new game to see if it also occurs there.

Alas, I only have access to an industrial whale processing plant.
Now all we need are some whales.

Or, migratory snow geese.

Realistically, @conanjaguar is correct - feathers are plucked by hand. I can't think of any tool which would make the process faster - unless you have access to an industrial chicken processing plant

I finally created one on a new run. Used it to haul all the loot from TWM Mountaineer's Hut (after I had looted all the cargo containers) to PV. Working great!
I can see them as a "portable collection device". I centrally locate it in an area I need to loot and make excursions, returning each time to load it up. When near full, I haul it to a "hub" such as Farmstead or TC. I'm glad they put in extra saplings - I can see me having these scattered everywhere!

If you have the DLC, all of the variant rifles always spawn, the best one IMO spawns at coastal Highway, just look up Barb's rifle so you can get the spawn points.
Curator's, all the way!

I was also somewhat surprised by the amount of time it takes to harvest a little bird - more time than a full size buck or wolf? I do understand plucking feathers takes time. Perhaps HL could have given us fewer feathers from each bird and shortened the harvest time. Then it would have taken more birds to create items. I'm sure the HL team discussed this and balanced it the way they saw fit.

Jod's Bountiful Foraging mod has this. I use it.

Players will always find ways to "abuse" mechanics in games. The creators know they're doing it. It's up to them if they believe it encroaches "enough" on their vision of the game to do something about it.

I am wandering about the map, enjoying that feeling of really having no idea where I am going, what there is to find, what resources there are... this adds something to the experience.
I'm envious of new players, for this very reason. Enjoy it

I would love to have polar bears; although, I don't know if their habitat extends to the area of Canada we assume TLD takes place in.

Crafting or recharging gas mask canisters

Have you explored other areas of GBI? Also, there are actually very few areas in which canisters are needed. You can safely run through most of them. I fully explored the mines are used maybe 3 or 4 canisters.
