  1. Why is it better to lie a bedroll down by a fire and hit pass time and canceling better than swapping out an ear wrap or satchel for an emergency blanket. I swap out the ear wrap for the crampons all the time if I walk up to a rope. In the game you are always trading meters whether it is encumbered / cold / sure footing. So for a small temperature uptick (could be like warm up bonus) you may lose on the fatigue slightly (encumbered) If I'm walking around and I'm freezing cold in the wilderness the last thing I'm going to do is put a bed down on the cold ground. I would however wrap a blanket around myself and try to build a fire. I also think anyone that goes to the local hardware store and plays The Long Dark sees things in the camping aisle that would be cool in the game.
  2. Well the bedroll is only good if you pass time you lay it by the fire and hit pass time which is an hour. I guess if you hit cancel right away it's only a few minutes. I think most of the suggestions on here would make life easier for the player.
  3. My original suggestion was not a big heavy blanket but these silver blankets. They are not heavy or anything just a small blanket that one could wrap around themselves when huddling by the fire. It could use one of the accessary slots like the crampons. Just give you a very small boost of warmth. Good for those times when you have only a few sticks for a fire and not a warm enough fire to gain temperature. Have it so it can only be deployed when not moving. They would not require cloth but would degrade pretty fast so would be for a few uses then they would be ruined. https://lcpshop.net/product/emergency-blanket-survival-thermal-protection/
  4. The screenshot might have timed out on upload , I have crappy internet. Yes I did moved the rope from the one side of the bridge to the other and climbed down to the area around Climbers Cave. Like you said other than the deer carcus spawn there is only rabbits to snare. What really is too bad that there is no rope climb down to Anglers Den. Instead you have to goat down there and then take the long way back around by the Miners Retreat --> High Meadow. I stayed a total of 63 days on Ash Canyon the most of any region for this survivor run. I think I could have stayed a lot longer but started to get bored so time to move on.
  5. @Gun Tech. You pretty much hit the nail on the head. Boredom and letting your guard down are the biggest dangers once you are late in a run. Once a base is established it doesn't take long and you soon have a big pile of raw meat (usually rabbits) more gut and rabbit hide than you would ever need. I find myself repairing my rabbit hat / mitts when they reach 98%.
  6. So I made it up to the Summit and back at Mountaineers Hut for a 50 day stay on Timberwolf Mountain. Left a fair amount of loot in Ash Canyon though so a small loot run might be in the works once I get settled in here. I explored Ash Canyon completely and find the map very nice overall. I would say on Interloper it has a lot of 4 wolf packs blocking key exits to the upper regions but by eliminating the small 2 wolf patrols between Anglers Den and Miners Retreat one can manage rather safely on the map overall. I find the map a little less confusing than Hushed River Valley once I got to know it and it terms of size it takes a fair amount of time to cross from Miners Folley to the Deer Clearing Cave. I ate the last couple chunks of bear meat and the old bear had respawned again so without a doubt one could spend a very long time on this map. Every time my cabin fever warning was over 50% I just went to the water fall cave or the burnt fishing hut to deal with it.
  7. That's the exact plan I'm going to the cave that leads to deer clearing then make my way up to the summit. Loot then goat down from there to the Mountaineers Hut. Will stick around Timberwolf Mountain then work my way back to Mystery Lake. Not going to get ahead of myself this time. Want to spend 50 days in each region on this run but always mess it up before I complete it.
  8. Just hit 50 days on Ash Canyon plan is to get the moose hide satchel then make a bid for the Summit of Timberwolf Mountain .
  9. Well @Dr. S.I did make it over to Stone Shelf Cave got myself a deer right away then a moose soon after. It is a pretty good spot just not sure my route back out to a work bench with my moose hide. Would like to get the satchel before heading back to Timberwolf mountain as I want to make a bid for the Summit when I get back out.
  10. Have to admit I always start a trip 5kg under my limit but pick sticks constantly and break down branches on mild days and always end up with 5 kilos of sticks.
  11. Ruined tower on Coastal Highway ??
  12. I'd go hang out there but so many wolves blocking the way to that part of the map. Just have to go the long way around by Climbers Cave. I take so much cold damage though just to get there
  13. Carry cooked meat when moving regions. Save cat tails, canned food and other food that don't add scent. Even one chunk of cooked deer might get you in trouble with a keen sniffing wolf. Fill up on meat before leaving though. When the weather looks like it's going to be a blizzard on the way. This is not the time to go across the swamp on Forlorn Muskeg. Fall asleep on your bedroll out in the open in bear country. Got mauled by a bear in TM when I took a short nap on a rock face on the creek north of the Mountaineers Hut. Leave your bedroll in the building while you go out exploring. You never know when bad weather will force you to go to a cave or shelter with no bed. Eat cooked bear or wolf meat without level 5 cooking in interloper. It's not worth getting intestinal parasites.
  14. Behind the work bench in that little room is a warm area , I didn't need to go to the cave. But remember I have good cloths so maybe with starter cloths it might be too cold.
  15. You know that feeling you get to a rope and here you picked a whole bunch of sticks but you are encumbered. But you are climbing down so wouldn't it be nice if you could just throw all the sticks you just picked down the mountain and pick them back up after you climb down.
  16. Well I have a new interloper run on the go and 33 days so far on Ash Canyon. This survivor not as upgraded as last one and no Bearskin bedroll. Anyway some more observations from the run. I did try to spend a good night fishing on Bitter Marsh. I took all the coal from the coal mine and stuck in the box at the fishing hut. The plan is to use 1 coal and then sticks in each fire I plan to build. This run I lucked out and got two boxes of matches at the Anglers Den. The fishing is not as good as other places I must say as I was catching all small white fish and only small bass (just caught the one). I have been cleaning up the wolves utilizing a couple trees for safe shooting with the bow (not level 5). I have done ok but I have avoided the narrow ravine with the 4 wolves . I would like to make it down there as there is some resources to be had so may have to goat down to a perch somewhere to deal with the wolves. I have been getting the cabin fever warning a lot so it's forced me back to Miners Folley for some crafting outdoors and sleeping in the barn. The one day I killed a couple wolves from the log near the falls and went to get the arrow from the second one. I had to walk all the back to Bitter Marsh where it died. I was exhausted pretty much on the way back to the Anglers Den and was walking into a head wind when I got hypothermia just near safety.
  17. The Polaroid spawned for me near the gold mine in a plastic container. Sent me to the vista by the High Meadow. I tried to get up top there in my Pilgrim run , you can get close but not quite unfortunately so I made no better progress than anyone else.
  18. Lost a 700 plus day interloper run over my laptop shutting just as the game was trying to save. It's frustrating no doubt and you feel sick for a minute due to all the progress lost. But that 700 day character sat untouched for a year when it reached the 500 day point because all the skills were maxed out and I could have survived forever quite easily. I only revived the save to try to tough it out on the most formidable regions. So in the end the game is most fun when you have the crappy cloths , poor fire making skills, and are barely getting by. When you reach the point when it's easy boredom quickly sets in and it's time to start a new run. Each run though you learn something that you bring to the next run. The challenge for the developers is to continue to mix it up a bit to challenge the gamer with a new set of obstacles.
  19. This is not an issue with the game though , the game is trying to save at the moment the lap top shuts off. For now I just back up my saves and limit my Long Dark sessions so the laptop doesn't get too warm.
  20. A common item in any camping section are those emergency blankets. Could give you a small warming bonus while sleeping or huddling by the fire.
  21. So today I had my 700 day Ash Canyon player just waking up after a sleep and was getting ready to go out and check some snares and as I was waking up my laptop just shuts off. When I load the game up the save is GONE! Just so frustrating.
  22. I'm 16 days into my Ash Canyon stay and it's been interesting so far after settling in at the Anglers Hut I started thinking about making it to Gold Mine and I had played the map on Pilgrim so I knew a route going along the west of the map. But what I remember was a rope climb up to Climbers Cave area and that route was blocked by wolves. So I took a route a little to the north and more direct in the end. I crawled past the moose at the rope area and made my way up. There was a snow shelter up there so I rested inside lucky I packed the Bearskin bedroll as it would ultimately be my saving grace. For the second climb I built a fire and had a small nap and then drank some coffee before making it up. The third I did the same built a fire with a piece of coal rested and made the climb. So I was pretty much spent then I took the rope off and tied it to the one going down to the mine. Staggered into the cave and the next day got the backpack and crampons. Big mistake though as I didn't bring my hacksaw so couldn't harvest all the saplings that were everywhere on this route. I decided to make for Miners Folly and made it to the cabin there I could hear the bear but I didn't look for him I just ran for the door. The next day I slipped up to the Formans house and when I went to leave the bear was coming up the hill so I shot him with the bow and he ran off. So I harvested the bear then I went back to the hut by Bitter Marsh and back to Anglers and grabbed my hacksaw and came right back. This time I really took a huge hit on health but I got all the saplings I missed. I'm just recovering here and would like to explore Climbers Cave area a bit. I need to snare some rabbits to fix my mitts and hat. This map is no Mystery Lake and my survivor is being put to the test pretty good.
  23. You are correct I noticed the one warm up cave you mentioned on the way back from the gold mine . I had spent the night in the other cave with a fire going all night. I plan on crossing the other rope bridge near the Miners Folley to get into the Climbers Cave area and do some rabbit snaring at some point. Miners Folley is a nice area but is kind of far away from everything. I can hunt deer here but if I want to snare rabbits I have to cross rope bridges to go check them. I found an extra rope so I think there is a rope I can deploy to bring me closer to the Anglers Hut so I can avoid wolf central.
  24. So I took my best survivor to Ash Canyon on day 700ish and I know it's late in the run but I wanted to make some observations about the region since I have not played on anything other than Pilgrim previously. Weather: My survivor has good clothes maybe not the best but Deer skin pants (2 layers) deerskin boots, rabbit mitts and hat , wolf and bear coat and toque , just one set of underwear and ear wrap. But she is getting her health given a severe beating nothing close say for maybe Bleak Inlet. The wind is pretty crazy here as well as blizzards keep hitting every other day. So I almost died going to get some saplings at the mine (forgot my hacksaw the first trip) Wolves: None up in the highlands but Anglers Hut area is crawling with them. Haven't tried fishing overnight at Bitter Marsh but I think I have to do a wolf cull in the area before I consider it. Killed 6 wolves near the Anglers Hut and had 4 more blocking the way to the rope climb towards Climbers Cave. Food: Lots of food actually , the bear at Miners Folly and a couple moose hanging around. Lots of cat tails, mushrooms and rose hips everywhere and the odd birch bark areas. Firewood: Anglers Hut is good for this though plenty scattered around the area and fir and cedar logs to cut close to the cabin. Loot / Other goodies: Lots of saplings , and 2 arrow heads in the drawer. Still need to forge knife or axe to think about getting a bow though. Conclusion: For a starting region not the greatest , well unless they plop you near the gold mine but like my character it's not walk in the park no matter your skills and gear.
  25. I made a very short stay at the Mountaineers Hut and packed up in the morning and made for Ash Canyon . I had spent a couple days at the Hut I had shot the wolf on Crystal Lake the first day from the dock and ate him up. I also shot a deer at the lake as well so I have some meat in front of the hut when I make my return in 50 or more days. I had to build a fire on Bitter Marsh and drank some Mushroom tea . When I went past the falls I didn't realize I had a piece of deer meat still on me and a wolf was heading straight for me. But I shot it with the arrow and it ran off . Then I seen it's friend and I dropped my deer meat and still crouched I lured it into the open and I shot it with the bow and it ran off as well with my arrow. So I raced up the river to the Anglers Hut and unpacked all my stuff. Next morning I found both wolves and my arrows so I cooked them up. I found 2 arrow heads inside the hut which is great news for new survivors on interloper on this map. Still need a knife or hatchet to craft the bow and arrow shafts however. The plan is to slowly work my way around this map the next 50 days and loot everything. I will need to kill the bear up on the mountain so I can repair my bear coat which is only at 79%. Going to be an interesting 50 days here
