  1. "The more you know, the less you have to carry." - Mors Kochanski One thing i always do before going into a difficult region is repair all my clothes up to 100%. Squeezing out every degree of warmth will let you explore longer and take less damage. Try it out if you don't I've realized that you don't need to go into new regions with lots of equipment. Prepare the basics (a full lantern, ammo for your weapon, matches, etc) and a few items that could save your life in a bad situation (flares, stim, coal, cloth for a snow shelter, coffee, pills), and that's it. You'll find what you need to survive once you get there. There is almost always cloth, there is always fuel, and there is always food. . . . The only unique item i might bring is a loaded rifle with 10 spare shots to make life easier. Even then, not sure. Mountain Pass is likely to have lots of ropes, so you don't wanna be encumbered I usually carry a bow around since it's ridiculously good as a weapon overall, but rifles are pretty sweet too.
  2. Extremely. they dont decay, they are super lightweight, and they dont make you sick. Salty crackers are one of the best foods you can find. Save them for a rough day, eat when fully dehydrated to remove that downside if the situation allows it.
  3. Here's some ideas We could make soap out of potash and animal fat We could make bombs / firecrackers by doing hydrolysis with water making H2 + O2 (explosive mixture of gas) during auroras Could make chlorine gas by doing hydrolysis on salt water, maybe to make cleaning equipment (dunno if actually possible) Make charcloth from cloth and an active fire (charcloth is amazing tinder that catches sparks very well) Maybe woodgas by burning fire in specialized ovens. woodgas is like natural gas. could be used in lanterns (in game, not irl) Making fertilizer from the air, useful for making explosives (possible cuz air is 80% N2) Making stump remover from potash and salt water There's also ways to repurpose human pee into usable chemicals, but this is hilariously time consuming and ineffective. also the process is unbearably rancid and stinky not sure what else could be made from stuff laying around. many of the things listed above aren't easy. realistically we would be extremely limited and stuck making soap
  4. ..wha? The game being or not being perfect has nothing to do with anything i said I'm just saying that TLD doesn't warrant a sequel
  5. It's just done to show that the prisoners are very bad people. They had no reason to do it. They just did it cuz they thought it was funny, i guess. You question a prisoner about this and he just goes "yeah i wasn't put in that bus cuz of my good behavior", lol . . . This premise is just hilarious to me. A bus with like 20 prisoners in Tshirts with zero equipment or weapons crashes into a town of people and the prisoners just win and burn it all down? Like, we're in the northern canadian wilderness, in a remote town. Everyone is gonna have a gun stashed in their home to defend against wildlife or criminals. There's no police around to protect you, rural communities have guns. Especially in such an environment. The Prisoners by all accounts should have just been killed right then and there. They were outnumbered, outgunned, with zero weapons or equipment, in tshirts during winter. The town could have even used Hatchets, knives or prybars to defend themselves, or just lock their doors and let them all freeze to death, or whatever else. The people who settle in such places are no pushovers, they're tough. But the prisoners kinda just win against the town somehow.
  6. Just excited to see what i can make with the pelt. The rifle doesn't care about what's on the other end of the barrel. It'll fall just like any other animal
  7. The Long Dark doesn't need a sequel, it's perfect as a standalone game. Not every great title needs to have a sequel When people ask for GameTitleHere 2s, they usually picture a game that's bigger, better, prettier, and everything is working exactly as they envision it... ...which is never what happens. TLD is already a massive game with tons of features and more is yet to come. We got additional content with the tales DLC as well. What this game needs is more improvement and polish. Make some features interconnect with each other better, flesh out some systems, squash some bugs here and there.
  8. Hey about part 5 Now that you chose to separate wintermute from survival, isn't it coming back to bite you? Wintermute is stuck on 2.08 or something, but the game has improved drastically since then. It has no first person coverings, no harvesting animations, many textures are older, etc. Isn't this gonna harm the experience of story mode for episode 5? Feels quite bizzare to hop into story mode right now and see everything being different
  9. Naaah, people are overestimating the cougar i think. There's no way the cougar has a worse mauling than a bear. Even if it does, hauling around 6kg and destroying your stamina will get you in trouble quite a bit
  10. Another game that has survival in the brutal cold as a theme: Frostpunk It is admittedly a V E R Y different game from The Long Dark, but it could be worth a shot for you. I liked it a lot and I'm impatiently waiting for the sequel It's a dark, depressing and brutal city-building game about the last city on earth after an unexpected ice age hits the world. You are the captain of these last few souls, and you are expected to manage resources, balance pragmatism with morality, and somehow try to keep your people alive through the plummeting temperature. You will have to make hard decisions every day. The city must survive. It is insane how quickly Frostpunk will turn you into a monster to keep the city alive. If you want to play a game that will challenge your morality, go for it. Oh also: Incredible soundtrack. Even if you don't care for the game, give the soundtrack a listen on youtube. It's really good.
  11. Embrace the art of ALT F4 friends unless you weren't on pc. Then that sucks even more
  12. Beachcombing only run Vegetarian run Only crafted clothes run Basically just pick something that you're not allowed to do anymore. Bam, that's your challenge run
  13. @Lone Walker The cougar is DLC exclusive content, if you don't have Tales you also don't have the cougar
  14. Yeah this is just another speculation. Maybe i should have named myself SpeculationEnthusiast If it's extra scary, it's probably a new mauling animation that's separate from the wolf's, because if it was familiar it wouldn't be terrifying And since it's extra scary, the player probably won't be able to fight back, because taking control away from a player is one of the pillars of making something scary in games spooky games often make you hide instead of run to take power away from you to make you feel scared for example It's a common way to do it
  15. Idk how close is very close, I'd be willing to bet like 3 weeks from the dev diary or so It feels like Hinterland is trying to buy time because they're juggling like 10 different things at once right now They're working on: Mountain Pass Mountain Pass Tale (Probably? Since ZOC released with its respective tale) Wintermute pt 5 and all the stuff that thing's gonna have (probably a new region, but this is speculation and not confirmed) Hunted pt. 3 Nintendo switch shenanigans The cougar Trader or Safehouse Customization (hopefully) Minor new stuff like new clothes, tools, etc. Bugfixes here and there And any other potential set of unannounced features this update might have in store just like past updates So they're probably working on like 2 (speculation) regions and many different features across more than one platform Even the dev diary the announcement feels strange. Saying "The week of May 13th" is an odd way to word it. They're probably going to release the diary at the end of the work week on the 17th or sum
  16. yaaayyy new animations also I think this means that we won't be able to fight back during the struggle
  17. I've also noticed this. I thought that animals just despawned completely when you entered and exited a building, like with the ptarmigans next to ML's camp office very interesting to hear that arrows remain attached to the bear
  18. Patiently waiting in the snow for the update to hit, so i can suddenly wake up once again and start another brutal journey through the snow
  19. It's a singleplayer game, do whatever makes you happy. I think the 0.1kg thing was patched out with the new harvesting animations btw, since you can't cancel midway anymore and still get meat When it comes to lighting a bunch of fires, i feel it's totally fine. You are quite literally spending time making fires and thus practicing and improving your fire making. No different from reading a skill book
  20. Yeah i was making a very subtle remark towards the helmet because that's pretty much the whole point of it But hinterland just kinda forgot to make its protection better than the bunny hat or aviator cap. i think.
