  1. Thank you for the kind words. I actually just got the achievement for wrapped in furs last night. It amazes me how this game can calm me and be so peaceful and within a second have me on the edge of my seat. I think the permadeath is one of the greatest things ever added to games.
  2. It depends, sometimes they are ripped and sometimes no damage at all. Admittedly I am fairly new to the game and dont know how all the different weapons affect the wolf struggle outcome. I just use the knife because it's one less wolf to deal with after.
  3. Finally got back to the muskeg with enough coal to fire that furnace and crafted 8 arrowheads. I have all the feathers and shafts back at my main base. Excited to get back there and craft some more arrows so I can raise my archery skill. Looking forward to using the bow more. Also while really heavy the bearskin bed roll really does help out with the cold. I have not woken up cold once since crafting that bad boy. I received my first badge this morning as well. It was for running a certain distance in game I believe. Wondering how these work in game? I assume some type of permanent bonus?
  4. I try to keep both my hatchet and knife above 80%. I use my hatchet mostly for wood. I use the knife for harvesting as well most wolf struggle. Tried using the pistol for struggles after getting to level 4 handguns but found I lose as many struggles as I win. With the knife I have never lost and the wolf always dies. Admittedly right now my hatchet is at 48% because I've been traversing the muskeg chopping the shit out of wood along the way.
  5. Caught this today. Largest I have landed. Got me to thinking, would a fish of that size fit though the hole in the ice?
  6. I do know about throwing rocks, I just suck at it. I am day 145 and have had 110 close calls with wolves. I have 39 killed and 1 distracted by decoys. That's a solid 1 though. The look off I did not know you could do. I will try it later tonight when I get a chance to play. Thanks.
  7. I am going to go with the bed roll for sure. You guys brought up some valid points against the coat. Although (imho) it is bad ass looking, its upkeep would be really tough due to the general lack of bears and the ridiculous long curing time for a hide. Thanks again to all for the advice.
  8. I usually do save by sleeping. That's my preferred method but passing time does say that it saved and shows the icon.
  9. This morning I loaded my game and went about harvesting a few wolf hides and a deer hide from the previous day. Put them down to cure in my cave base. Took care of my hunger and thirst to head back out. IRL was out of coffee so had to run to the store quickly. Created a save thru the deck of cards icon in the radial quick wheel menu. When I returned (now with that morning cup of coffee in hand) and loaded the game I was back to my morning save. Lost all progress from the in game day. I know I saw the hatchet icon when I passed time. I was able to harvest everything again fairly quickly so no big deal. Just wondering what happened.
  10. Are they safe to set up as a temp base for a few days? Or even a more permanent base? Can bears shelter in any cave? Can wolves enter or follow you into a cave? This is my temp camp in Pleasant Valley right now. I dont want to wake up to a bear at the foot of the bed roll. For reference it is located by Three Strikes Farmstead.
  11. I currently have the Wolfskin jacket in the outer slot and the military jacket in the inner slot. I dont mind the wolf, deer and rabbit clothes because I have hides cured just about everywhere I have been now. So it is pretty easy to keep them in great shape. I have not come across the expedition parka yet. That said I have not explored every region yet. When I head back through ML I will stop off at the trappers cabin and craft the bed roll most likely. I may craft a second wolfskin jacket as well.
  12. The Pleasant Valley farmstead has a fairly safe bear shooting location. There is a bear that will walk right by the main house. You can wait on the enclosed porch on the backside of the house. When it walks by you have a great shot. Just open the door and shoot. You can lure it closer with a rock as well for a dead center head shot. If it charges just close the door.
  13. Just a quick update, made it to the forge in FM and realized I didn't have enough coal to get it to temp(will not make that mistake again). Left my hammer there for when I return. I finally got around to crafting a bow and have four arrows. Was hoping to make a few more arrowheads. When I get back to the Muskeg I plan to do just that. I am now on day 130 and have Harvesting, Cooking and Firestarting at level 5. Rifle, Revolver and Mending are at 4. Archery and Gunsmith are at 2. The rest are at 1 still. Wow what a difference a level 5 skill makes! I now have 2 cured bear pelts and guts for days. I am hoping some of the vet players can give some guidance here. Is it more beneficial for me to craft a bearskin jacket or the bed roll. What benefit does the bed roll give? I assume a warmth bonus of some sort? Any advice greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
  14. I to just made the jump from Voyager to Stalker and I am at day 128 I think. A few things I have learned along the way. 1 The weather changes quickly. Really think before leaving your base, you may not make it back that day. 2 Things can go from great to I am screwed real quick. Always have a flare or two on hand. They will save your life. 3 Try to get your fire starting and cooking skills up as quickly as possible. At 5 cooking you can eat any cooked meat without risk of parasites. You can also eat any condition (even zero condition) packaged food or soda with no consequences. 4 Try to leave stashes as you leave an area, they may be needed later on if/ when you return. 5 If you have less than half stamina try to avoid a wolf struggle. (see flare tip above)No shame in running away and taking them out tomorrow when you are rested. 6 The ravine between Mistery lake and Coastal highway is a godsend, always a great place to relax and harvest a deer or two. Some rabbits as well. There is enough there to be able to craft rabbit gloves and hat (I THINK) as well deerskin boots or pants. 7 You can never have to many matches! 8 Pleasant Valley is not so pleasant. Hope this helps in some way.
  15. Just passed 100 days and the game just keeps getting better. Milton/Mountain town was a blast, saw the sights, shot some wolves. You know the usual stuff. Now we are off to FM. Then hopefully to a forge to craft some ammunition.
  16. I dont think it would be good as a reusable item. However as a one time use item I think it could work. You know caught out in a blizzard, disoriented and can not find shelter. You can not start a fire due to the wind. Curl up in the emergency blanket and ride it out. It would have to be one time use otherwise it would become a crutch for the player.
  17. That is some serious calories right there.
  18. I have only used it for protection from wolves and protection from the cold. I do like the idea of having a few steaks ready when I am done harvesting. I am going to try this.
  19. I just passed my 50th day on this run and have to say that I really do enjoy this game. Dont think I have played more than an hr or so of other games this past week. I do like the fact that Stalker still has gun play. I absolutely love the fact that said gun play is not the focus though. Have I mentioned that I hate wolves.... Was harvesting a deer this morning, started my fire to keep the wolves at bay. I usually keep a flare in hand when I start to harvest so it will be ready when I'm done (if needed). Coming out of the harvest animation I hear the bear growling at me. After quickly soiling myself I realise I can't run away and decide to run down a few rocks. This is good the bear has to go around. Allows me to get a clean line, pull out the trusty Mosin Nagant drop to a knee and clean hit but the bear is still coming. I reload hoping I will have time to get off the second shot, ready my weapon and fire. The bear drops right before me. I had to pause the game because my hands were shaking. After I could hear the wolves howling so I ducked out inside of a nearby house after dropping my much needed venison in the snow out front. The game just keeps getting better. Oh yeah did I mention I hate wolves.
  20. I have decent clothes, but still wouldn't say I could ignore the weather. Am I missing something?
  21. I am not even close to ready for interloper. I dont have the map knowledge yet. I am good in mystery lake, coastal highway and pleasant valley. The other areas not so much. Another big thing is the tools, I still need to find my axe in a stump and knife on the floor. Can't say that I've been able to ignore the weather either. Has been exactly the opposite actually. I am at 28 days on my first stalker playthrough. I am good with that for now. LOL.....
  22. It is quite possible I will end up wolf food. Hopefully it will not be on day 7 of my journey. However, avoiding wolves is the thing I struggle with the most. Either way I can't see myself going back to Voyager.
  23. Hello all, I bought this game back in November. Started playing in Voyager and was able to get to about 50 or so days after a few runs in the sandbox. Figured it was time to step up to stalker. I have played quite a few said survival games and this is by far now my favorite. All I can say is WOW. The weather is just punishing and wildlife are unrelenting. It really makes every decision matter. I am about 6 days into this character (Shady Steve) and just made it to Pleasant Valley from Mystery Lake. Hoping I can make it to the Farmhouse and then we will go from there...... Thank you Hinterland for this amazing game.
  24. I usually do it about 70 ish percent. Mainly because I am so used to repairing my clothes at that point. Was also wondering if the tool condition had anything to do with harvest times or say breakdown times? You know like harvesting a deer or breaking down a crate.
