My second entry for best WINTERMUTE cosplay- Will Mackenzie. I thought I would also do a Will cosplay to show off my amazing beard...

 

Will finds Astrid's kill and camp but she is no where to be found. He decides to rest, in hopes she will return soon and they will be reunited in The Long Dark.

I did not choose this but here i am, i guess once we care about something there is nothing we cant do for it. The days are blurry, nights are cold and dark but i will not give up until i find Astrid. I know she is out here she can handle herself so should i. Wolves and bears are one thing but it is the mother nature that never stops to get you. I met a man named Methuselah other day, i dont know if he was real or not but one thing i am sure is everything he said is true. The quit apocalypse is here and i must try my best to survive it.

My Experience: As it is mentioned before once we people care about something there is nothing we cant do. The Long Dark is a game i care about so much that i will carry it with my whole life. The choices and decisions we make are who we are and Long Dark is with me while i am making them. I tried my best in everything i hope you like it, the spear is hand-made by me i carved it. Some of the clothes are from my friends and the some of the items are from my grandpa. It was truly a unique experience. My friends and i had so much fun, i am so glad to be a part of this community.

Hi, my name is Volodymyr!

After I received the letter about this event - I remembered the whole long history with this game.
From first builds to now.
It feels warm under my skin when I finally made a campfire with completely frozen fingers in the middle of snow blizzard in Canadian mountains. It's not "just a game" to me.
I created a small game inspired by The Long Dark as a diploma work at university and used the beautiful ambient soundtracks for my wedding anniversary dance.
I had tears in my eyes when I found out that Hinterland made a Ukrainian translation for all the text in the game.

And now I happy to take a part in this cosplay contest.

 

Best WINTERMUTE Cosplay : Will Mackenzie

The only one thing which helped me to keep warm into coldest Kyiv winters since 2014 - this blue winter jacket from second-hand and I feel that it's fate.
I tried to put myself into Will shoes in his journey. 
Understand what he feel and to absorb this emotions and express this into cosplay. 
When he in front of new hindrance on his way.
His way from to get lost, be wounded and alone to become like driven beast of prey, who fight not for life, but for death.

 

 

Best Survival Cosplay : Hatchet

Hatchet has a main role in "The Long Dark" surviving story.
To hack your way as an uninvited guest in the heart of the Canadian mountains.

Chopping wood to keep warm from the fire and creatures frozen flesh to have another one day to fight for life.
I made a copy of game hatchet and found a juicy reference from "The Sequence Group" for this red photo.

P.S. I've been trying to find some sort of water tower like in Milton or a lighthouse like in Desolation Point for a more appropriate background, but they're all far from Stockholm where I'm at now. So this is what I have

Non-Core Character Cosplay : Grey Mother

Hello there, this is my contribution to this contest ! (And sorry in advance for my approximative english)

I'm doing Grey Mother. I found her very "long darkist" as a very very lonely character, left to herself in her house.
Hard to survivre if you don't know what's going on, if you can't see and subsist for our needs...
I wanted to make her mourn, in Lilith's room. She's a vailant women but also a mother with a heavy tragedy to bear.
 

For this cosplay i made the pure wool blanket from scratchs ! It is so heavy, I would not carry it in my survival bag 😅
I also made the Lilith frame ! Yes, i have it for ever in my house now !!
I used some objetcts of my family : the rifle from WWI was found by my grandfather in a river while he was diving, and the jacket below was his. Of course, the rifle doesn't work, it's just to intimidate some looters who would be tempted to enter my house... Also very heavy, maybe i can knock out a wolf if it manage to go inside 🐺
I also have shoes, necklace and rocking chair from my mum. My sister helps with the photography.
I did some photoshop just for the background and darken my pictures.

Well done to all the participants, I saw some great cosplays !

The Long Distant Past

 

“Funny how little memories like these turn up. I forgot I even had these photos from when I first started trapping, I figured them lost to the ages. I spent hours making that wolfskin cloak if only I had known just how much I was going to need it. Ma insisted I have that old flint knapped spear with me in the pictures, she was so proud of the work I did. The time has come for me to move on, maybe I will bring these memories with me. “
 

I made the cloak from a wolf pelt obtained from a Canadian trapper some years ago and a large section of mink fur from an old coat. The sweater I got from a local thrift store as well as the spear. It was definitely handmade but I have no clue to it’s origins.

Character: The Old Bear

 

A bit of a strange favorite character, but the Old Bear has always spoken to me when I play! There's something tragic about it, a wild animal with nothing left to do but hunt. I had a lot of fun making this cosplay! Even if I can never make it through The Hunted challenge, haha.

Category: Survival

For me the long dark has been about getting back to the tramping (aka, hiking) that I love to do. Especially as I can have the adventures from the safety of home. Having chronic pain really hinders what I can do, and The Long Dark really helps me get out of my head and do the things I miss. It definitely  distracts from the real world. I'm incredibly grateful it exists. Thank you.

For my cosplay I'm a survival character slowly finding their way in this new landscape. Having made a "moose-hide" satchel they hope to continue their journey further, and are contemplating their next adventure. 

The Southern Alps.

While not as extreme in terms of wildlife compared to Great Bear, the Southern Alps present many weather challenges. With constant changes to the weather, only the experienced survivor can survive. However the reward may be worth it as valuable game roam these hills.

Note: The "moose-hide" satchel lacks actual moose hide as there aren't (many?) moose in NZ. Also I found that with waxed thread and a good leather setup, it took me 2.5 hrs to craft this satchel. However a determined survivor with little leather knowledge and lack of a hammer and punch, would definitely take a considerable amount of time to complete. The moose-hide satchel can definitely hold 5kgs extra and I can't wait to endeavor to make one in the game!

Also a quick fun fact! The Southern Alps are some of the fastest growing mountains in the world, however their height is often limited by the extreme weather causing erosion.

These mountain were the training ground for Sir Edmond Hillary, the first person to climb Mt Everest in 1953.

This is my first cosplay competition and I decided to go for one of the most visually striking and interesting characters in the game. I really enjoyed dressing up as Jeremiah, despite it being far too warm and sweating far too much. Creating the costume and props was incredibly fun, even if I accidentally poked myself with a needle a few times. I tried to find get as many materials from second-hand shops as possible which was an extra added challenge. 

My boyfriend helped me film this short film and edited it for me 😊

The idea behind this cosplay was an alternate imagining where Jeremiah is the one to face his old nemesis The Old Bear after finding the bear spear for himself. While setting up a snare, he notices a bear print and attempts to travel back to his cabin. However, the bear tracks him down and he prepares for an epic final battle in front of a waterfall.

Huge thanks to Hinterland for putting this together and for all their work on the game! I’ve always wanted to do a TLD cosplay especially as here in Minnesota, winter is 6 months of our lives! All the gear pictured excluding the backpack is my go-to winter hiking and hunting outfit. Even the “bedroll”(a wool blanket) comes along on extreme cold hikes as an extra layer and emergency tool. Even though it isn’t winter here yet, I tried editing them to give them that winter look with some non-edited as reference.

Survial mode day 25

It is dawn, I begin another journey at mystery lake just outside the trapper's cabin. I have spent 3 days reparing my gear and healing my injuries. The only way to survive is to keep going. I know this and yet a part of me wants to stay. However, I keeping going. I travel through the ravin and reach costal highway early the next day. As I am walking I am in aw at the "lights in the sky" ; no matter how many times they apear the northern lights never cease to amaze me. I am about to locate shelter when a blizard starts to form and I cannot see the shelter anymore. This is the long dark where death is the inevitable. I am becoming low on supplies. How much longer can I survive? 

Insperation: The northern lights. 

Item from the game: Can openner. Located in photo one hooked to the strap of my bag resting on my left shoulder. 

Item I would like to see in game: A spear. I think hunting and surviving animal attacks would be easier if we could make one at a work bench.
