twitchy 040
wiuld like to se them add felling dead standing trees for wood. i figure 1.5 hr total to chop and cut up/split for a med tree. and in that they would have to add a larger axe and bow saw. would have to make a fire near the tree to stay warm

There are thousands of trees in the game - limbs are not always so easy to find (particularly in a bind like bad weather or at night). The OP is suggesting the ability to knock down a dead or small tree and chop that up (tho it would certainly take a few hours to fully harvest the entire thing) for an increase in firewood. That's far more wood and far more availability than fallen limbs, which don't always spawn . Not a duplicative suggestion at all. 2

You have to limit resources or game is way too easy. It’s by design.

Personally, I don't think it's that bad of an idea, though I can understand why you aren't a fan of it.
Sprinter
While I think that being able to chop trees would add some realism, imo what you suggest is absolutely unrealistic. Assuming that the trees in the game have a diameter of half of a meter you would look at 10 hours+ net time to chip through the stem with that little hatchet. Introducing a 4kg lumberjack axe, which can be swung with a momentum that makes a difference, an untrained person would still need 2 or 3 hours, be extremely fatigued even before having finished and have their hands full of blisters for weeks. The lumberjacks of the old days didn't get their physique by playing cards. Sprinter
There is one insteresting aspect to this: Limbs fall from existing trees during blizzards. Thus no trees -> no limbs. The player can chose to chop the trees around the camp for ensured firewood but 0 sustainability or chose to search for limbs in a wider area, which will respawn infinitely. In technical terms though it's not the trees that produce the limbs, it's a defined area on the ground. They've simply placed trees in these regions--if you deleted the tree objects from the map the fuel would still spawn in those regions. So it would be necessary to further define a mechanic that tunes the respawn rate for that region based on how many trees remain, and that can get dicey. Plus seeing as how most of the trees aren't dead standing, they're alive and dormant so they wouldn't produce very good firewood anyway. Live dormant trees still have a lot of moisture in them.
k0s0ff
Oh... I imagined a mysterious lake without trees. Sad wolves wander among the stumps, Pensive bears look around, Rabbits alone feel good, they do not obscure the sun....
Kranium
I have always been annoyed that I can chop up large limbs, but not the same-to-smaller sized limbs from dead logs on the ground.
