  1. Not just you on at least one point....when outside wet clothes do not dry and frozen clothes do not thaw if near a fire and protected from wind. Same applies for stoves in CH fishing huts. Only by removing clothes and placing them within a fire's warming radius did they dry/thaw. Within cabins the clothes do dry and thaw. I have found one burdock in CH but I have not wandered much from the shore since the update.
  2. I certainly agree with your choice of the Fishing Camp at Coastal Highway. This location is my main base. When returning after journeying elsewhere the first order of business is always "kill the bear" followed by 15 days of peace provided I keep an eye on the wolf that frequents the dock area. With a little work that wolf can be lured towards the fishing hut with stones for an easy bow shot. The long stretch of coast is mostly wolf free for purposes of beach combing. Presently I have piles of meat waiting to be cooked - cooking 5 helps.
  3. I will modify my earlier post that I thought CH is most least stressful region. In terms of an area where I least need to look over my shoulder, I will nominate Trappers Cabin basin. I have never had the bear spawn in this area during my Voyageur runs. Wolves just don't appear in the area in front of the cabin even when I am carrying around some meat from the deer that spawn in the Trapper's basin.
  4. Thinking in terms of a whole region, it would be Coastal Highway. Travelling on the ice provides for good sight distance. Once I stock fuel and food at each fishing hut I can vastly expand my potential bases. Presently in game I am returning to CH with a pile of loot to just chill out with some beach combing.
  5. hozz1235, that is a nice haul in one CH beach combing location. To date I have found plenty of flare shells but never a flare gun. My experience within CH is that there are two sorts of beach combing loot: (1) persistent items that appear independent of blizzards and proceed to reappear every 7 days or so after they are collected and (2) boats, canoes, corpses, deer, wolf, pallets, boards, backpacks, suitcases and filing cabinets that show up only after a blizzard and remain available about 2-3 days.
  6. My approach as well UTC-10. I still have five regions to explore on my first post update run - base building and hoarding at its best. Most likely I will have all the transmitters up and running before I ever set foot into the Far Territories.
  7. My usual routine once I get to BI is to lure the bear close to the fishing hut for a bow shot. Once killed I have 15 days (at least on Voyageur) of beach combing without bear concerns. The area from the bridge to beyond the lighthouse island is not frequented by wolves. So far I have not tried my luck on beach combing in the area beyond the bridge past the cannery.
  8. Binge beach combing has been good to me. Presently playing on Voyageur in HRV but back in CH I have stashed away 43 birch saplings, 14 maple saplings, 25 arrows and 31 arrowheads. Apart from 12 birch saplings found throughout the region, beach combing has added 31 of those birch saplings.
  9. The last sixteenth of an inch of the mending progress meter seemed to take forever to advance. Once I was sure one more mending would propel me to level 5. Instead it would five or so mending episodes to get me to level 5. At times it seems that the progress meter doesn't advance when it is just advancing glacially.
  10. The bear that usually visits Crystal Lake in TWM sometimes just stops visiting the Lake for stretches of 50 to 100 days. Instead of luring him towards the Fishing Hut I will perch on the rocky promontory on the way to the Wing and lure him into arrow range from that location. In a similar fashion the bear that visits the CH Fishing cabins usually approaches using the roadway from the bridge at the mouth of Bear Creek to the cabins. After hunting the approaching bear from the rocks overlooking the roadway for 100+ days, the bear stops visiting the cabins for long stretches. After weeks of absence he will resume his old route. It seems that the game has some built in variability for bear routing.
  11. In my estimation beach combing loot got dialed back in the last day or so. The fishing boat, canoe and row boat have not re-appeared after the last four blizzards on my Voyageur run. Arrows (both broken and with 3 shots left) are still appearing along with cloth, leather and firewood. I accumulated roughly another 100 cloth, 40 leather, 30 flare shells, 30 birch saplings, 30 arrows, 25 arrow heads, 20 flares, 8 stims and sundry other items plus uncounted hatchets and hacksaws while the pickings were good.
  12. I can delete two items on my list above of items that do not wash up on the beach: - sewing kits - 1 so far; and - metal - 2 pieces so far.
  13. Perhaps marginally less common but I have not explored all regions post update to form a firm opinion. Birch saplings are substantially more common when beach combing. I have found 24 saplings along the Coastal Highway shoreline post the March 30th changes to the beach combing mechanic. In comparison I had found 12 birch saplings within all of Coastal Highway when checking traditional birch sapling locations.
  14. Agreed. In the meantime I will make hay looting while the blizzards fly.
  15. So far I have binge beach combed CH after 20 or so blizzards over a 50 day period - playing Voyageur. Some locations repopulate with loot even without blizzards. The boat has appeared three times. First time loaded with loot. Second and third times contained just fish and a can of sardines. Loot item variety is extensive. Below is a list of items that DID NOT appear, subject to change as they may yet appear: - Weapons - NO bows, revolvers, rifles or flare guns; - Clothing - NO expedition parkas, gauntlets, wool ear wraps, cowichan sweaters, fishermans sweaters, combat pants, snow pants or balaclavas; - Materials - NO metal, lead pieces, dusting sulfur, stump remover, gun cleaning kits, bedrolls, mag lens, lanterns, pots, gunpowder, acclerants or car barreries, - Equipment - NO heavy hammers, can openers, sewing kits, prybars or ropes, - Food - NO coffee or tea One conclusion is that broken arrows are so common via beach combing that I won't need to go forging to make them on Voyageur.
  16. The loot cycling continues for me at CH (Voyageur run). The last few blizzards have produced 50 or more matches - 10, 12 or 20 at a time - found usually within backpacks. Toques and Quality Tools too numerous to mention. Best clothing lately has been climbing socks in repairable condition and a Military Coat. Lets hope the clothes cycling eventually tosses an Expedition Parka or Gauntlets onto the shore.
  17. I believe you may be correct about cycling. After searching the entire CH coast over a period of 8 blizzards I found hatchets next to an overturned canoe but no other tools. The last 2-3 blizzards have produced hunting knives and hacksaws - if I recall 3 of each - when none were found before. Over that same 8 blizzard period red and blue flares were common - now they are unusual as if they have been replaced by other others that themselves become temporarily common. One constant item is intact and broken arrows. I am piling up so many arrowheads I won't ever need to forge any on this run. So far I have found two Frozen Angler books. As I am at Fishing 5 I would like to see the reading material cycle to Gunsmithing and Advanced Guns-Guns-Guns.
  18. Playing Voyageur, returned to CH from PV on Day 620 to try out the new and improved beach combing. Now I am on Day 647 with a bounty of extra loot. I have taken to using the two fishing huts to the east and west of Jackrabbit Island as mini bases just waiting for more blizzards. Each hut is stocked with wood/sticks, water and food. Washed up sticks, cedar logs, boards and pallets provide fuel. Washed up salmon and bass provide sufficient food. Deer and wolf carcasses found on the beach add to my stock of hides and guts. After each blizzard - maybe 8 so far - I walk the entire waterfront to find what washed up. I encountered the ship once so far: 1 Hacksaw, 3 Flare Shells, 2 Marine Flares, 1 Piece Cloth and 2 Fish onboard. I tried using the bedroll both on the deck and in the enclosed cabin - cannot be done. The cabin might provide some shelter during a blizzard but I would not want to put it to the test. Other notable items - apart from those noted on ship - include the following: 2 quality tools, 5 rifle casings, 1 rifle round, 1 Whetstone, 1 Stim, 1 Flashlight, 7 broken arrows, 6 intact arrows, 6 birch saplings, 3 maple saplings, 2 more flare shells, 3 red flares, 1 more marine flare, 3 hatchets, 1 spray paint, ketchup chips, beef jerky, Old Mans Beard lichen, birch bark, pain pills, antibiotic pills and cattails. Clothes have included climbing socks in repairable condition and shoes/boots too numerous to mention. Broken down these have netted at least 35 pieces of cloth and 25 pieces of leather. I have seen no degradation in loot quality over time. Prior to the change in beach combing I viewed the CH Fishing Camp, PV Farmhouse and TWM Mountaineers Hut as all equally good long term bases. Now the CH Fishing Camp/Jackrabbit Island area is by far my preferred area for a 5,000 day plus run.
  19. On my Voyageur run I had been exploring TWM and AC when the the improved beach combing mechanics took effect. Returning to CH I found one overturned canoe/row boat my first day back with some ruined fish, hatchet and oar. Otherwise, apart from the usual sticks, cloth, wood, I found a first ever used rifle cartridge. In a usual spot I search at the end of Jackrabbit island (closest to Misanthrope) I found yet another broken arrow. On this run I have found so many arrows (deer carcasses, beach combing, prepper caches and memento caches) - 32 in all - that I have not bothered to visit a forge to make arrowheads.
  20. Mountaineer's Hut in TWM. Few places offer such ease for finding food (rabbits, deer, wolf, bear and fishing) and fuel. Predators are very manageable.
  21. Is it possible to use the ship as a shelter? I see the ship cabin has a door and seemingly enough room for a bedroll.
  22. Three bases, any one of which I could survive upwards of 5,000 days. They are CH Fishing Village, PV Farmhouse and TWM Mountaineers Hut.
  23. Admin, thanks for your suggestion of suggesting the Player Log. Problem has since been solved. After trying various means of changing settings I changed the "Quality" setting to "Ultra". This would seemingly make no sense as Ultra should exacerbate a memory issue. As it turns out the game hanging up when leaving certain buildings or moving between regions ceased.
  24. Any news on the hotfix? I ask as the game is currently unplayable trying to move between regions. Windows - Upcoming Hotfix We continue to work toward resolving a number of issues on Windows, including: A couple of issues causing an infinite loading screen or failure to progress past the disclaimer screen after launching the game.
