  1. @xanna Agreed, I almost never listen to anything when playing a session other than the imbedded soundtrack, but these are all songs that remind me of TLD in some way or music that I think would pair well with it (either thematically or in general vibe). Granted some of them are just there because they happened to be something I put on via YouTube while I was making a long trek on a well-known route (but again that's rare for me to actually do). Naturally, I think that the original soundtracks (both from Sascha Dikiciyan and Cris Velasco) are perfect fits and frankly unreplaceable. But it's still fun to splice together and curate "TLD playlists" I'm glad you joined in... that was a wonderful selection.
  2. @xanna A wonderful pick. Queen - Who Wants to Live Forever
  3. Sometime midmorning, I was ready try and finish exploring around the lake/creek and on up to the Lodge. However, it wasn't until far too late into the day, that I realized that I didn't bring much water with me. Which had the potential to be a problem (since I didn't pick up any sticks along the way today). Weather was looking clear... if I could get up to and fully explore the lodge before dark; it'll be a good day. Hmm... at least four, or perhaps even five wolves prowling around the bridge... 🤔 ...which was all well and good... because my intention was to get underneath it. 🤭 I don't remember if I've ever managed to goat up that fallen tree before. Nice out of the way place... but not much to find here. 🤭 Since I'd already gotten by the wolves by slipping past under the bridge... I could then access it from the other side. I just had to keep low and listen for the one who wanders closest to the bridge to sound like it was moving farther away. Which worked just fine... failing that I could have tossed a stone to draw them off, but it didn't come to that. As I made my way further up the slope, I spotted a likely spot to goat a little beyond the beaten path... found a nice vista. Neat. This is now only the third accessible battery that I've found on Great Bear Island... still that number seems low considering the number of vehicles I've searched. 🤔 Hmm... the region really seems to want me to have a revolver. I'd already found one... and now this one sitting in the back seat of this car. Oh! I think this is the first time in literal years that I've actually found a rifle in a rifle rack. This place is eerie already... but the basement, more so. Horseshoes are supposed to be lucky... with my luck lately, I'm not sure I believe it. Which I suppose is just as well... it seems I can't pick it up, even if I wanted to. On to the second floor... I had to use my lantern just to make sure I didn't miss anything tucked away in corners and under furniture. After getting that done, crawled into a nearby bed for the night. While I'm running a bit heavy... a goodly portion of that is the rope that I'd found in the basement, and I get that deployed in the morning. Excluding the rope then, the pack is about 37kg. I may just try to haul that the long way around to the Rickety Food Bridge tomorrow. However, I'll have to think about that some more.
  4. I missed this bit before, so I'll come back to it now... I'm not convinced that the "First Flare" flipped the earth's magnetic polls... I would be more inclined to think it was essentially something akin to the Carrington Event... but possibly many orders of magnitude more severe, and with lasting impacts. That's my headcanon at least. 🤭
  5. In a situation where polarity is reversed... then sure... but what I'm referring to is the possible impacts of the "First Flare," including the lasting effects which presumably are causing the frequent "Aurora" events that fallow afterwards. In this case, I mean the apparent wild fluctuations implicit in being hit with a succession of probable coronal mass ejections. 🤭 Also... just trying to have fun with applying a very little bit of low-level science/physics to what we see and experience in game. From my end it's all just fanciful hypothesizing. In the end, it's just a fictional world, with fantastical things happening in it... and also just a videogame.🤭
  6. @xanna My apologies, I wasn't trying to criticize or anything like that at all... I was only trying to clarify/be more specific for what I was trying to convey. I was also just highlighting that piece just as a refence for which post(s) I was responding to as a context for my contribution to the conversation. I wasn't trying to "correct" anyone... those two quotes where just what I started building my thoughts on. Again, it was not meant as a criticism in any way, just a jumping off point for the ideas I was trying to describe; along with my interpretation of the lore and what it may imply.
  7. On those rare mornings when the sun is shining bright and it's relatively "warm" outside... you don't see any wolves skulking around and you're just ready to go exploring: Lost Woods - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  8. Precisely correct. As for the main topic of the compass... it's implied by the lore that the earth's electromagnetic field has been impacted (perhaps unstable/fluctuating) by/due to the First Flare and subsequent events causing the aurora phenomenon. Fluctuating magnetic fields mess with things that are magnetically sensitive. 😋 Here's a short example of what happens to a compass when magnetic fields are fluctuating: point is... even when it's not visibly apparent (like when there is an Aurora Event happening) unstable/fluctuating magnetic fields are still a problem for things like compasses.
  9. not really destroying/stopping electricity per se... more so damaging and breaking the components that generate current or are needed for the electronics on the user to be able to "work"... (I mean we can't really break electrons - at least not in the context of this conversation) So... while the stronger electromagnetic fluctuations are causing current to "flow" during the aurora... the equipment in the power plants that used to create that current is broken down (due to the first flare and its lasting effects). And again, it's not so much that electricity doesn't work... the equipment that we would use to generate current is just fried / broken by the wildly erratic surges the events produce (damaging/frying electrical components and wires that can't handle the voltage spikes and troughs). ...so then why do the radios still work?... because arbitrary design choice by Hinterland. Sometimes a videogame just has to video game. Hense we "have power" during the auroras... and that goes away when those auroras end. The aurora is effectively creating current via induction.

  15. It just seemed like a place that needed a name but didn't have one... so just started referring to it as the Lonely Meadow. It's by no means official in any way at all... but it's at least my headcanon. I'd love for the name to be adopted by the community if not by Hinterland too. 🤭
