So, the answer to your question is -- there were valid design/gameplay reasons to handle it this way, and we were also working within some technical constraints, and also also trying to make good future-looking decisions about how we would handle things as the game would grow. Which, I guess is a pretty fair description of game development in general. 😅

Thank you for that in-depth answer!

  2. I vaguely remember my first time playing TLD.  I had spawned in the Camp Office.  After looting it, and gearing up, I set off across the frozen lake.  I remember (falling through the ice?) and wolves.  I don't know how much I played or how many times I attempted the game after perma-dying LOTS but I do vaguely remember saying to myself, "I'm going to shelf this game for a bit" 😁

  3. This is great, @Raphael van Lierop!  It's like a "forum Milton Mailbag"!  I'm going to hop on and ask a question I've seen discussed.  What was your intent with having a loading screen when entering a small interior location (such as a cabin).  Speculation was that so you could not "reroll" the interior loot (by entering, loading a prior save outside and re-entering).  Is that true or was it due to other technical reasons (which we would love to hear)?

While on the topic: Try Firewatch.

Same exact artstyle as The Long Dark, it's around 4 hours long and basically a story-driven walking simulator. But it's very nice.

Loved Firewatch.  Was always hoping they would expand it or come out with FW2 :(

  5. I've also played it.  I want to continue playing it, but having to continually manually drive through the same zones to get to the farther zones is kind of putting me off.  I wish there was some sort of fast-travel to be unlocked after you've cleared a zone.  I know, I know, TLD doesn't have this but the atmosphere of the TLD makes it enjoyable to stroll through the same zone after the 1000th time ;)

  6. @Raphael van Lierop, we do appreciate your involvement in the forums!  It has brought me back to visiting more often.  I was a daily visitor for YEARS up until a few months ago.  Forum traffic seemed an all-time low and there was no news to discuss.

Regarding your response to @ajb1978: while you edited and said it was a joke, as others have said, jokes are hard to convey over this medium, and I can't help feel there was still a hint of sarcasm to it.  To alienate a long-time, active (one of the few) member, makes me sad.  If that had been said by any other member of this community, I'm sure @Leeanda, @ManicManiac and others would have spoke out.

To answer the original question:  I've been here a while so I forget my original reason for creating an account.  I do have to say, I don't create many accounts for games, so I guess that is an indication of my love for the game.

One has to be methodical I presume... I find myself half-collecting them, but suspect it's not good practice in the long run ("Have I found this one before...?") 😅

Yup, had a spreadsheet to track them.
