Cairns, who's counted them all?

Nope, I haven't.

 

  I just happened to find the actual 165 of 165 as I was transitioning from PV to ML via Carter Hydro and Environs.  I only know of a couple of players who have actually found them all.  I was very surprised however, to have run into so many cairns in mine tunnels and some of the interior cell caves if memory serves.  I would have never thought to go look for them in those locations if I were actively trying to attain the achievement.  But I do click on them when I do find them, in most cases disappointingly so,  as the greatest majority still remain unwritten stories.  From what I understand, it's not the Dev Team's fault that so many are unwritten but more so the lack of content from the Backer's themselves.  I can certainly appreciate their generous support but in hindsight, would it have been that hard to say a few words?

So can anyone tell me where is #1 located?  I'd just like to know without having to go looking for it.  Also, how many of these do actually have messages in them?  I do rather enjoy finding the rare message inspired Cairn as I am trekking across Great Bear Island. But not enough to make it a point to try to find them all... 

 I think its been a few years since the cairns were introduced.  With the updates have they been repositioned into the new areas as the world has expanded?  I honestly cannot recall if I've seen them in the newer regions like Broken Railroad or Bleak Inslet.  

My hat's off to anyone who has found them all.  Would certainly love to hear from anyone who's managed to "Count Cairn!"

I have everything.  All cairns, buffer memories, and collectible notes.  Cairn #1 was unobtainable for a very long time, like over a year, but it was restored to its original location with one of the recent updates.

The #1 cairn is in Pleasant Valley.  If you want something more specific, read the next line.

Somewhere between Thompson's crossing and the Birch Forest.  If you hit the Barn you're too far west, if you hit the Derelict Cabins you're too far east.  If you want to know the exact location, check the next line.

Head due North from Tompson's Crossing until you reach the river.  It's found on one of the rocky outcroppings that line the river's Southern bank.

I wish that the colour of the tag on the cairn changed once you discovered it.  I suspect that I often pass cairns, especially in caves, that I assume I have previous checked, that I might not have checked.

 

When players try to check-off all the cairns do they use a table of cairns and their position?  No, I don't want a table of the cairns and their position, it is that  stumbling across all of them, without a cheat sheet, seems a very difficult task.  Even in a game of over 1250 days in which I think that I have completely mapped everywhere, I have only checked-off 98/165 cairns.

The saddest one was the Geri the Cat one, kind of halfway between the carter cave transition and farmhouse.  Something like "I didn't appreciate you while you were here, and now you're gone".

I agree something to indicate you've already checked it would be useful.  Aside from that, I would however just like to know how many cairns are in each region if any.  At least that way I'd have an idea of how many I need to be looking for.  Might actually count them all for a change.

I know this might be a lot to ask, but were you able to screenshot the ones with messages?  I would love to read them, even if I didn't know where they were located.

I didn't screenshot them, sorry.  And unfortunately they don't have the cairn message in the journal.  I might go back and do that though.  It's my 900+ day run that I haven't touched in a month since I don't have anything left to do.  This counts as something to do alright!

First off, Kudos for having seen them all.  I've logged many hours over the past few years playing and probably still walk right by some of the more obvious locations.  I'll have to check out this Travel Guide, thanks for the tip!

That must have been a heluva challenge finding all of them without any form of cheat sheet/map. Congratulations.

I think it might have been better if you had not given the locations to Gecko, although it must still be a major task to check them all off even using a map showing where they all are.

You would think so wouldn't you?  But from what I understand, those cairns were fixed into location and placed in the regions that existed at the time.  Way back during the early access days if I'm not mistaken.    Since it sounds like only a third of the batch are even worth going after to check out for a message, it's probably not worth the programming time to do so.   I guess if they really wanted to it might be possible for the dev team to write some kind of code that would reposition and or randomly spawn some of the 165 cairns into the new locations, but I think the sheer magnitude of that sort of undertaking probably isnt even a consideration given the current plans for game.
