  1. I found it to be frustrating to use, but only played with it for a few minutes. Would not let me go up a slight slope with it, which likely means it is very limited in utility for how I play. I make my home on TWM so getting things to/from there means multiple climbs which means for me I don't see a lot of utility in the travois. If they added a wench you could haul the travois up/down with, that would be sweet. I guess it will come in handy when I kill moose or the rare bear that is far from my cabin (usually shoot from the porch to limit travel distance with bears). I am all for being able to haul more gear as they keep adding things like skillets and heavy clothing...
  2. Someone please post a video of the ring around the tree...intriguing! I use the safe approach because a) don't wanna die, b) don't want my clothes shredded, c) I want the meat at my camp and don't want to haul it and perhaps get mauled by wolves or bear when doing so. Even though it is relatively safe, I still get an adrenaline rush because there is still a chance of getting mauled (i.e. I am usually crouched and forget to stand to run and get caught, can't seem to open the door and get caught, or the like).
  3. I let the bear come to me. There are at least 3 places that a bear comes right to a protected dwelling or close enough that I can run and hide if my shot doesn't kill it. On TWM, I go onto the ledge to the right of the hut, shoot the bear when it turns right, towards the fishing hut, and then haul butt back to the cabin. At trapper's, I do like Chaos does, go on the ledge and when he gets in range shoot and run. Finally, in BI I step out on the Construction Worker's porch when the bear comes up off the ice and shoot him from the porch. I don't "think" the bear can come on the porch, but I usually run inside if I don't one shot drop him. I've also shot the bear from the cliff above the stream that feeds down into Crystal Lake, though that can be dangerous if you simply wound him. In that case, I take the other route down and back to the Mountaineer's Hut. Also, I have shot a bear several times on the ice, using the fishing hut as a safe haven. This can be dangerous if the hut is not stocked with wood...so try to stock any I use regularly that are in a bear area. Oh yeah, from the porch of PV Farmhouse is another safe place to take a bear.
  4. Definitely bad decision making is my number 1, bears ae #2, wolves hardly bother me after getting almost 500 days in.
  5. I've been playing TOTK lately... Caught the latest Dev Diary...not great news but also not totally unexpected. Patiently waiting for the next tale to get going again on GBI...closing in on a 500 day run but my mind is elsewhere right now...
  6. You can toss a torch or a stone at it and be able to harvest. Seems a known issue and easy to work around....I put in a ticket and have a post with about 5 animals in about 2 days that this happened with. A stone fixed all my issues...lol
  7. Ticket submitted. I linked this forum so I didn't have to upload videos again, hope that works for HL!
  8. OK this is getting ridiculous! Happened again with a Timber Wolf in BI and just now with another bear in BI. I was able to use the stone trick (FINALLY found a dang stone in BI!!) on the bear. See video for how that works. Only works for a second so get what you can or toss the stone again. Guess this just means I always keep a rock in my pocket until this bug is squashed. Thanks again @MrWolffor the workaround!! The Long Dark 2023.05.04 - 14.53.53.04.mp4 The Long Dark 2023.05.04 - 14.55.04.05.mp4
  9. Thanks. Just found the one near the fishing hut on other side of lighthouse. Can't get to the items past the chest, which I could get to due to thin ice....will check out the others! Appreciate the update!!
  10. Is there more than one area to comb the beach (ice...) on Bleak? I have been doing the area just east (?) of the cannery...wondering if there are other places I should be aware of. I normally would just explore, but I am a bit shy of walking on ice...have fallen in waaaay to many times! lol
  11. @LeeandaThat is impossible, lolz. No my total time in game is 2000+:
  12. Oooh, nice tip. Unfortunately I am several regions away from both carcasses to try this tip, but I certainly will keep it in the back of my mind next time it happens. It has only happened to me one other time, and I have almost 3000 hours (real time) in the game. Twice in an hour is definitely a sign of a new bug! Thanks for the tip!
  13. Hmmm...about an hour later, I am heading from Camp Office out onto the lake and I see two wolves patrolling in my direct route. I crouch in the cat tails, one approaches in range, and I shoot him with an arrow, dropping him instantly. I wait a few minutes and the other approaches in range, shoot, but he runs. I harvested the first wolf, drop him at the Office, and see crows near the tracks. Walk over and there is my other victim. Pick up my arrow and ... cannot interact with the wolf. Lots of wasted resources on this trip!! Wolf No Meat.mp4
  14. Oddly enough, I made it back a bit faster than above. I did not go up on the ridge, but instead (having killed the bear) went the bunny rabbit and more direct route. Time from door to door was 4:12 or 50.4 in-game minutes or about 2.52 miles. I did sprain an ankle on the way back but did not stop to heal.
  15. So I was up at the Trapper's Cabin hunting a bear after pacing off the distance from the Camp Office for another post. I shot the bear, but did not kill him. He ran at me so I went into the cabin, ate, drank, slept. Came back out, hit wait, he was suddenly very close so I ran like a sheep back into safety. Next day, I go out and do the same, he is close, but not as close, so I get a good shot at his head and down goes Mr. Bear! It is starting to get foggy so I run down, grab the pelt and as much meat as I could cut in an hour. Head back to cabin cuz it is like pea soup out. Putter around the cabin, cooking that bear and water, waiting for it to clear. After 4+ hours or so, I pop out of the cabin and it is crystal clear so run over to get that meat and guts...and cannot interact with the corpse. I took a video, which I will post, but I need to edit it as it has my desktop and stuff like that because it was the first time I have tried to capture TLD on video and was struggling a little. Anyhow, this same thing happened to me a while back in PV at the Farmhouse...need to read and review the post but I think weather also chased me off the bear for some period of time and when I returned I could not interact with it... 16. OK, I just paced this off for you. From door to door, it took me roughly 4 minutes and 27 seconds. I don't think I can beat that time just walking. I might have shaved off a little time, but the bear was in the bunny area so I definitely needed to stay on the ridge. I can't believe that would have saved more than a second or two. So that is 267 seconds, divided by 5 gives us game minutes of 53.4 in-game minutes. So that comes out to 2.67 miles, given that I was walking at 3 MPH. I was lightly loaded at 35 of a possible 45 kilos, and I was at around 25% on the tired meter, which I don't think slows you down until it gets lower than that but not sure. This does not match the map information stated above, not sure why. Could be any number of factors/assumptions made. Got a bear to kill now...will do the reverse trip and report back but gotta think the results will be consistent. Also the sun/moon dial went from about 12 o'clock to about 1 o'clock, as best I could eye ball that...
  17. Agree with all, however I don't think I can do that walk in under an hour game time. Could be wrong, but feels like that is going to take a couple of hours. I use cat tails, wood plugs, and ruined sewing kits to mark the trail. Will also use sticks and water bottles from time to time. Usually a unique item, like the sewing kit, to show the trail head, and then periodically drop tails or sticks in the direction I need to go. Has saved my bacon on a couple of occasions when I got caught in a sudden blizzard in a place I was less familiar with. Also saves times in places I am not in often as I get lost less often. Getting lost could mean the end of a run... Other consideration on that particular route is there are a number of ways to get there. I go from Camp Office to the rail, down to the Deadfall Area, cross over to the hill going up with the rocks and fallen tree, up to the top of the ridge, then follow the ridge over to the other side of the barn, down the hill and into the cabin. This avoids bears and I rarely get attacked by wolves on this route. Could also go down the tracks toward FM, hang a right at the tunnel, and around along the mountain side. I have run into a bear and wolves on this route, so I tend to go with the less dangerous route. Could also head the opposite way up the tracks, take a left at the bunny area, and then you have a number of ways there. The route I go seems shortest and less dangerous, so that is the way I would pace off next time I am in the area...
  18. For a healthy younger adult male, the average walking speed is about 3 miles per hour. So if the distance as calculated above is correct, it should take about 20 minutes in game time to go from point a to point b. I am guessing this is not possible, but am not in that area to pace it off...
  19. @hozz1235This happens to me from time to time with this game. I will put it down for weeks or months and not think about it, then decide to give it a quick go and end up playing for months. I kind of lost interest before they announced the DLC and probably didn't play for 4-6 months. But once I heard they were adding new stuff, I started playing. When the save game change occurred, I started my current run and am around 450 days in (game time, not IRL). I savored the challenge of the update, and once it was over I started finding it hard to motivate myself to get to 500 days, which is a goal of this run. I have been able to do a lot of things this run I have never done before, so it has been a blast, but like you I am feeling a little blah about the game the last few days. What is different about TLD is I will come back to it, which I rarely do with other games. Played Hogwarts for few weeks, got bored, and have not gone back. Started playing Assassin's Creed and didn't make it very far at all before deciding to keep looking for something else to do in my game time. Not sure what the roadmap for the next update is, but hoping that happens sooner than later to get me back in the saddle...
  20. It is also possible to climb up without ropes. I tried but after the 8th or 9th sprain I gave up. Might try again someday...
  21. Nope. Using to shoot wolves all day. I usually reload after 3-4 shots and never have seen anything but the right number of shells in the snow for me to recover. Might just have been the spot there has the snow higher than the ground or something? Like when a wolf dies and is partially buried in the snow?
  22. Back to Forlorn Muskeg: I think it is trying to kill me! The last TWO times I went through FM, I walked up on a bear. First time, I just shot and killed a wolf, suddenly hear a bear to my right, spin and grab my rifle...pop..pop..got two shots off the second of which put him in flight and saved my bacon. About 30 minutes ago, I am heading back to TWM from FA after finishing the challenge, feeling good about all the new stuff I got. Get to the end of the train wreck in FM (first one coming from FA direction, not second one) and am in autowalk mode cuz never saw anything in that area but a wolf and had a pistol out. I suddenly see a bear about 20 feet in front of me as I pop over that little hill of snow. SMASH keyboard trying to stop, luckily hit some key that stopped me, hit crouch. Wait for attack...somehow the bear didn't see me, which I don't think IRL would be possible as we were almost face to face. Sneak back to the fallen tree and crouch under there, wait 20 minutes game time, and continue as he is over to the right at a safe-ish distance. Then I walk up on 4 wolves! I am really tired so I grab Vaughn's and fire twice, missing once and nailing one of them on the second shot, dispatching another with the pistol a bit later, but so tired I miss it, but it ran scared. WHEW! I am on day 430, trying to get that 500 day achievement. Almost got killed by FM again!
  23. Wondering what the next challenge will be and noticed a few things: After finishing the challenge, you get a badge. You also keep the handheld shortwave radio in your inventory. Could there be more transmitters to find in the next challenge? Or could it be used to find something else? Or did HL just not get around to removing from inventory yet? Also after finishing, I had about 10-12 each of the wires and fuses left (about 4-5 kilos of weight I happily dropped in Omega). Perhaps I will be making a return trip to retrieve them, or did HL just sprinkle many more than needed around Great Bear? Challenge felt like it wasn't completed based on the logs and notes you read along the way...seems like there is more to this story OR it ties into Wintermute? There was a prepper called Omega, and Omega is usually paired with Alpha...wonder if there is another set of preppers in the works for the next challenge? Thoughts?
