  1. I don't know if the ESRB follows the same guidelines as MPAA, but I know the MPAA's new ruling (it was different for 80s/90s movies) allows one F word for PG-13. Anything more and it gets an R rating.
  2. Yeah 😛 I definitely only play the bear part (in story mode) when the kids are in bed. The amount of times that stupid uber bear ate my face made me wanna put my shoe through the TV and the unskippable nature of it. Ugh. A warning would be a decent idea. I'm wondering if they may have to implement that when the game is finalized, if only because I doubt they wanna see the rating shift to M. Also would be handy for folks to know the filter exists (because I know I completely missed it in reading the patch notes). The filter skipping is a little annoying, but it was only maybe... 5 words total that it missed (and I think it had something to do with the suffixes confusing the filter) -- Ultimately it works really well and is greatly appreciated.
  3. I really wish before folks replied they'd read the whole thread, instead of just commenting on something that's already been discussed. Again - I wasn't suggesting that I expected the prisoners to be fluffy puppy huggers. No one here has said that. But there was certainly not any indication in the previous episodes that such gratuitous amounts of swearing would be presented. I'm happy with the filters (tho as a previous poster pointed out, it does miss some of the words), but it's significantly jarring when you aren't anticipating it and there are more than 10 F words in one cutscene at the very start of the episode. I'm just glad my mother played it first and warned me, because (not anticipating it) I intended to play it when the kids were awake. The previous chapters had only a few words here and there, and the violence has always been what I'd consider relatively tame - I don't enjoy the bear-mauling (mostly because it gets irritating after a while), but I also don't see that as a comparison to the gratuitous swearing. And for the record, while my kiddos are actually homeschooled, I'm not delusional enough to think they won't eventually hear bad language. I'm well equipped to turn that into teachable moments. I don't see where you got the impression I was 'hiding from reality', but I personally find there's a big difference between reality, and a video game rated T for 'mild language' dropping in M rated language usage. If my kids hear the F word in real life, I will explain to them that it is a swear word and shouldn't be used liberally... But I'm not just going to throw on Wolf of Wallstreet and let them go nuts watching it.
  4. I actually started thinking about the usefulness of items besides their intended game purpose and kinda wish there was a way for the game to institute a sort of... open world concept for -item- usage. The thing that made me think this was the hammer, actually. Going through the steam tunnels, I came across the locked door and thought how useful it would be to just hit the padlock, break it, and go through the door that way. Would be neat for a game to award out of the box thinking, you know?
  5. Maybe he thinks he is Fibonacci? @LeeandaI greatly appreciate your attempts at civility. Takes a big person to apologize when they feel they're wrong, but I agree with Corso. It's just a waste of time apologizing to someone who thinks they're always right. At any rate - I'm actually inclined to agree with @manolitode too - This thread has devolved from the original intent and into something off topic and unnecessary and it would be silly to continue. There's an off topic section if lord wants to go post his puzzle there, but this forum is for Wintermute related content and there are plenty of other threads regarding the Steam Puzzle. Peace out, folks.
  6. Then your puzzle is as illogical as you think the steam puzzle in TLD is, because I actually (being truly intelligent) googled the answer, seeing how the best way to achieve true knowledge is to come to it from the source. Every single source site I found about the Wumpus game has said 21. But go on being the smartest guy in the room. Literally no one on the planet will ever care more than you about that.
  7. I have literally zero need or desire to prove my intelligence to you, bud. But because you obviously need to feel superior to others... For the record, it's probably 21. It appears to be the Fibonacci sequence. And the game was called Hunt the Wumpus, if I remember correctly.
  8. Just realized what it is Ep. 4 was missing for me, and wondering if it was an intentional choice or potentially oversight cause so much else was going on... But either way, I'm a little bummed we didn't run into Methuselah. I felt like there were a few places he easily could've been discovered (the random cabins or barns for instance) but he was no where to be found. Sort of a shame... Coulda used his quirky wisdom in such a dark place.really hoping his presence is explained/has a purpose at the end, cause otherwise it's a little deus ex exposition...
  9. I got hosed... All I had were land wolves, man...
  10. "It is a wise thing to be polite; consequently, it is a stupid thing to be rude. To make enemies by unnecessary and willful incivility, is just as insane a proceeding as to set your house on fire. For politeness is like a counter--an avowedly false coin, with which it is foolish to be stingy." -- Arthur Schopenhauer
  11. Dude. IQ has absolutely nothing to do with it. This is a game. Period. You want realism in something that is intended for entertainment purposes. The fact that you can't find enjoyment in it because it doesn't meet your standards is unfortunate but insulting other people who disagree with you by calling them unintelligent, illogical or incompetent is just rude. You may think you're smarter than everyone.... But I'd rather be respectful and kind.
  12. I feel like the game is gearing up to have a sad or even dark ending (no pun intended)... and I really really hope I'm wrong, because I detest going to all the effort and energy to finish a game, just to die in the end. My HOPE is that Will and Astrid are able to reconnect and reconcile over the loss of their son, recognizing that through the trial of surviving Great Bear, they're a lot more perseverant than they first thought. I'm hoping that they can fly back to the mainland, leaving the island behind in a bittersweet montage of memories, ala the end of the first Jurassic Park movie. Also I demand that we get to shoot Mathis in his stupid face, cause screw that guy...
  13. You mean in a legit survival situation you wouldn't scoop out liters of toilet water from a dirty public restroom in a prison guard station??
  14. All fun. Zero fun is allowed.
  15. In a game where you can traipse around for days on end, despite having been given a legitimate warning not to dawdle - literally, you can take weeks of in-game time to chill, craft, hunt, build, travel, treasure hunt ... Where you can get shot or mauled by a wolf and slap on a bandage mid run and not die... Where you can spend the night in an open cave with no fire and you're totally fine... Where you can fill up an old lady's fridge with 80lbs of water and not have her smack you upside the head... and THIS is what you choose to focus on? Man... I really worry that you're a little too invested in the 'realism' of this game. It's disconcerting that you can't seem to separate reality from fiction. It's a game. Meant for entertainment purposes. It's animated drawings and voice actors in a studio. If you expect 100% realism, maybe you should just try out for the show Alone??
  16. Your fun is wrong @Leeanda! Stop it! 😉
  17. VERY SMALLISH SPOILER AHEAD || Yeah - I was a little surprised by her reveal, as well. I was expecting more of a tough, mother-bear kinda character (I actually, like a lot of folks, thought she was Molly LOL). I can't say I dislike her, but I definitely wasn't as endeared to her after her reveal, given how timid, scared and unprepared she seemed.
  18. I actually don't disagree here. It would've made sense, had the intentions been thoroughly character based. The problem I have is two fold. The first is that it wasn't just Mathis and his goon squad. The caller (don't wanna spoil) was also swearing quite frequently, which gave me the impression this was a decision to amp up the 'adult' levels, rather than a choice to make bad people sound bad. Sort of like when a show changes primetime slots to a later slot and they decide to ramp up the violence/language because the kids are in bed. There's no real reason to and it doesn't further the plot, but they can so they do. Only problem with TLD doing it, is the game's rating didn't change... But the filter does help (though it misses quite a few words haha) so there's that at least. The second issue is that this isn't the first time these types of characters were introduced. In chapter one Mack interacts at length with the same breed of creeper and while he's definitely a ruthless brute, he manages to convey that without dropping F bombs. Same with the end of episode two, when you first encounter Mathis. It all gives me the impression of a preteen first exercising their 'adultness' by throwing cuss words into their sentence structure on the playground, meanwhile knowing they'll get their mouths washed out with soap at home. It was a strange direction to take, for Devs who seemed to take great care in effective dialogue structures in the previous chapters, particularly because their writing is one of their greatest strengths. Before, the swearing was minor, but it had effect. Now it's just sprinkles on a cupcake... Useless sugar flavoring the already sweet. Glad I can filter it, but still a shame they went that route. Hoping episode 5 won't follow suit, cause it really isn't necessary for the game to be good.
  19. Why do you feel the need to be so condescending? Do you really need to have the power trip here? I acknowledged in the very first paragraph of my post that this wasn't a game for kids. If you took ten seconds to read it thoroughly instead of deciding what I said didn't meet your criteria of acceptance, you'd recognize that. My issue with the language stems from the fact that it wasn't utilized in previous episodes and was therefore an unexpected issue which, had I known it was going to be a thing, would have effected my purchase. Thankfully there is a filter, which I have put to use and I'm able to continue. Which I also acknowledged in this thread. The game isn't rated M, it's rated T. There are specific guidelines to how the ESRB rates a game and I'm careful with what I play because I don't care for the language in M rated games. That is my personal preference. Sorry if my personal preference offends your sensibilities enough that you felt the need to be rude to strangers on the internet? I guess everyone needs to think like you for the world to function. Again. Disagree all you want. Maybe next time learn to do so with a little common courtesy. I expect you'll respond obnoxiously again. You may have the last word if you need it that badly. I've said my piece.
  20. First of all, my son doesn't know that word and he's 8 because we don't swear in front of him. Regardless of if/when he hears it, we plan to teach him to be respectful about swearing, as it isn't a necessary nor intellectual way of going about life dropping cusses everywhich way. That being said, there was very little reason for it to be added into a T rated game and I'm well within my right to offer feedback. If someone's opinion is different from your own that doesn't make them wrong, and it doesn't equate to whining. Might wanna consider having some respect when you disagree, instead of being condescending and rude about it.
  21. Ah! I had no idea that was a thing! Thank you so much!
  22. Soooo... I'm gonna just preface this by saying I completely understand the Long Dark isn't meant to be a game for kids and also that I wholly recognize language was already a thing in earlier chapters... But I have to be honest... I'm a little disappointed that the dialogue devolved so intensely from the first three chapters. I know the setting is prison and these people are more hardcore... But hearing the 'f' word so prevalently when (as far as I recall) there was maybe one use in chapter 3 and none in 1 and 2 was more than a bit jarring and frustrating. I counted at least 10 uses from the first three cutscenes. I realize I sound like a prudish Karen. I'm not really sorry for that. This game is fantastic and so fun to play, and one of the things I enjoyed most was that it wasn't like other survival games (disturbingly violent and filled with swearing). Eventually, when he was a little older, I intended to let my son play.. I definitely can't do that now. Hoping this foray into the pervasive cussing was just a Chapter 4 thing and not how the dialogue will be written from here on out. Holding out hope Hinterland realizes they can make a good, quality game without all that. Or at least that they'll consider a swear filter setting for us prudes lol EDIT : Also... REALLY curious how this much language was even permitted considering the ESRB rating is T?
  23. Please explain to me where I said anything about torturing animals? If that's where your brain went that's on you, dude. Also this isn't REAL survival, bud. It's a GAME. Fun is the point. If you don't grasp that I'm not sure that you should be playing because the disclaimer literally says not to treat TLD as if it's a training manual.
  24. Settle down there, Nil... This is an interesting idea (taming), but a little unrealistic. Most animals need incentive to be 'tamed' -- generally this involves food. The animals in TLD hardly seem to be starving (there's deer and rabbits to kill, everywhere). You could introduce the idea of cubs/young, but that would be mechanically challenging, particularly in survival mode (if, for instance, you culled too many young, you would see a drop in production and eventually would run out of meat to hunt). Not to mention that auroras seem to directly result in the animals going loco, and that wouldn't bode well for a 'tamed' pet (or you)...
  25. I would absolutely love to see more food items than just processed goods. I realize that the notion of survivability makes processed goods more beneficial but I find it a little strange that of the hundreds of houses you come across, not one person left behind things like... baking goods (flour, salt, sugar, yeast, etc.) or pasta, or dried/cured meats, or veggies. It seems rather unrealistic and silly that everyone on Great Bear buys exactly the same 10 ingredients LOL.
