ajb1978
Huh...could be an opportunity for a Long Dark fanfic survivor story. The guy who is committed to keeping the world going. Collects and consolidates supplies, still has access to some regular electricity and so maintains a beacon, welcomes newcomers, ensures everyone is well-equipped before heading out into the new world. Maybe the briefly teased "barter system". You can rob it once, then you're blacklisted forever. Or you can cooperate, and thrive.

ajb1978
What I wanna know is what the hell does a Breyerhouse Pie even taste like. I'm in the upper midwest US we don't have those birds here, so right away I'd have to improvise with probably chicken. OK see THIS is a great business opportunity! The foods in this game are getting increasingly specific, and as the player base is not getting any smaller, that creates a potential source of revenue! Or maybe I'm an idiot I dunno. ManicManiac
I don't know about how feasible it might be for the Hinterland store to carry actual food items, per se... but there is absolutely a chance for a Great Bear Island Cookbook. I don't know too much about ptarmigan other than they're a kind of grouse. I think there might be a couple of cousins in the Midwest... so there might be a closer substitute. ajb1978
Actually Skyrim, yeah they did come out with some cookbooks. Star Trek too. Just some real-life versions of stuff that appeared in the fictional universe. I remember eating some kind of Klingon Blood Worm deal, that was really based on I think udon noodles. I could totally get on board with that, but I would definitely prefer recipes I can make by hitting up the local grocery. I love the exotic aesthetic, but yeah. If you can get what you need inside of 30 minutes, that's the real gold standard. Edited July 15, 2023 by ajb1978 don't even wanna explain the clustercuss, just refresh and read it again
ManicManiac
More general substitutes could be factored in too... if perhaps grouse is too sparce, maybe pheasant? I believe Pheasants are Galliformes (as are Grouse). Perhaps a more distant cousin maybe, but it could work. And... I'd be all for a Great Bear Island Cookbook. ajb1978
Well yeah, I'm just saying, I'm not gonna find that at the local grocery, and I'm not about to go crafting a bow and fire-hardened arrows to hunt grouse for real lol
ManicManiac
Well I did miss the bit where you'd mentioned the grocery store; fair enough. 🤭 Edited July 15, 2023 by ManicManiac

So you very well may have missed nothing at the time. I'm reminded of the time I went in with three other guys and we all bought a steer together and paid to have it processed, then we all took turns grabbing cuts of frozen meat and dropping them into our respective coolers for transport home. I'd be willing to do a similar "crowd-sourced" meat purchase for rare ingredients like grouse. I don't seriously expect that this will ever happen, but if recipes with authentic ingredients also included some option to order a box packed with all the rare stuff you need to make said recipes, that could work. Maybe. Just spitballin at this point.
ManicManiac
With another rather large batch of coffee brewed... I think I'll forego sleep again until I've gone through all the coffee. That being the case, if I don't get the houses finished up today... it's going to costly in lantern oil if I have to prospect through houses through the night. Either way... today I'm getting the rest of Milton done. 🤭
ManicManiac
Hmm... now I have a decision to make. Stay here and reorganize; maybe buildup my water supply some more? Or... tank the blizzard to get the work done. Okay, I admit that's not even a real question for me. Time to Tank a Blizzard! ManicManiac
Thankfully, the blizzard also meant the streets would be clear. I had an opportunity to make short work of prospecting through the houses and the Post Office left to visit. I didn't expect to find a sack of potatoes. More antibiotics is always welcome (especially considering the rather low-quality food I have on hand to eat later ) An additional storm lantern (merely full as well), this will solve any problem I might have been considering regarding lighting throughout the night. I figured I'll just run this one down, and either break it down or leave it behind when I move on to the next region. Thanks to this find I can light up the dark with reckless abandon. The storm broke while I was inside... normally I've be relieved, but this time it would prove risky. ...and this is precisely why... I would ultimately have to risk hauling raw meat with me through town and back to Grey Mother's House. I wasn't about to leave it behind. It's still free calories, after all. Finally, the last houses in town... but a fog was also beginning to roll in. More rabbit meat, salt, and antibiotics? ...Yes please. I'm not sure how I should feel about this... On the way back to Grey Mother's House... took a moment... I wonder. 🤔 I don't know why I stopped to try... but I managed to goat up to the roof of this house. I finally got back to Grey Mother's house and spent a fair bit of time getting things sorted out and stashed away. Prospecting through Milton has been very profitable... more so than I expected in several ways. Nearly fully loaded stove... A fair amount of food above 50% condition (in addition to the stuff below 50% that I've been lugging around in my pack)... And a veritable cornucopia of recipe ingredients. Once again... it's been a rather good day. I still have several mugs of coffee... so I won't be sleeping tonight. I think I'll be heading over to see if I can find that hidden supply stash that the note I'd found alluded to. There's a long night ahead... Leeanda
You found all those new ingredients in five houses? I didn't even find that much broth on the entire island.
ManicManiac
@Leeanda I was surprised by this too. As well as finding a total of two revolvers and two flare guns. I've also run across more batteries in Mountain Town than I'd found in the other regions I've been to so far (combined). Milton must have been rather prosperous in its heyday.

I know the regular stuff has been more randomly spread around but you seem to have got two maps worth in one... The irony with those batteries is that the one place you don't want to be overweight is the only one with climbs .😁
ManicManiac
Night hiking in a fog can get deadly dark... perhaps this is riskier than I'd originally estimated. 🤭
Leeanda
Any fog in Milton central is dangerous, so I hope there's something good in that cache.
ManicManiac
[Accompaniment]Timecop1983 - On the Run - YouTube When I stepped back out into the night (after a considerable amount time spent sorting and stowing), I found a rather dense fog had caused it to get deadly dark. Thankfully I did still have the extra lantern found earlier... so if needs be, I can burn that additional lantern fuel. Thankfully, by the time I got to the bridge, the fog had already started lifting... it was much easier to make out shapes in the darkness. I've always found this church to be rather unsettling... there's always been a very oppressive atmosphere that just clings to your soul and the chill in the air. When I'd stepped back out into the night (right about midnight), I found that the fog had lifted and visibility was wonderful. I decided to follow the river to get over to Milton Park... seemed the safer route. I decided to temporarily drop off all the food in my pack (keeping only water and coffee). It occurred to me that I should take the opportunity to explore the Climbing Areas. Better, I thought, to do it now than trying to lug unnecessary things out when I eventually go out that way for Mystery Lake. I was glad to see rabbits scurrying around... they could be lifesaving wolf bait (should one be down here to catch my sent). Not much down here... but still some good materials. At the very least, it's another ten cloth scraps than I had before... as Captain Malcolm Reynolds would say, "And that's not nothin'." I sat a while in the Pavilion and thought about where I wanted to head to next. I decided to head back to Grey Mother's House via The Arch. Seemed the side route would be potentially safer. I still have a few mugs of coffee and it's nearly morning... I'll just stay up and work on getting ready to head out to Hushed River Valley. That's the next on the list. ManicManiac
@Leeanda I think the most "deadly dark" night I've experienced so far was on Timberwolf Mountain. That night it was so dark, i HAD to use the lantern just to be work my way back from the Lower Wing Wreckage back to Crystal Lake; safely.
