Suggestions from a long time fan

Hi!

First off, I want to say I love the game. I've played it almost 300 hours and I keep coming back when new content drops. I really like the new location "Ash Canyon", it's very dynamic with its long snaking ravines and large open burnt forests. The rope bridges are really dramatic to walk on and watch longingly from a distance(how do I get up there?). There is much drama to be had on this map, climbing up and down the many cliffs of this huge map. Personally I find the maps with human made structures to be the best. Mainly because starting on the harder difficulties there is zero chance of survival if  I can't find clothes and tools. Even though there is crafting that is pretty much useless when starting out with nothing. Having man made structures containing anything as basic as cloth is a glimmer of hope in those extreme situations.

Anyway, as long as there is more content; especially more maps, I will keep coming back for my survival fix.

So here are some suggestions:

  1. Climbing badge. So climbing the ropes, especially ascending is a dramatical endeavor and I get why it is so costly for the character. Carrying all that gear, in the cold would probably be impossible, still I would like to see a badge that could give us a far off bonus for braving those climbs. 10% slower stamina drain from climbing.
  2. Candles. So I often find myself with lots of hours in the dark, having nothing to do. I keep picking up any bit of cloth, mushrooms etc to have something to do during those long bits of dark. Finding books is awesome but the problem is light. I can multitask with boiling water or cooking meat while having a fire going, there is like three in game minutes to spare before a can of water boils dry when doing one hour of reading. That is okay but I would really love to have a candle in the game. It would make sense to find candles in the cabins and these would only be used for light(stationary). It would only be useable inside and have no other uses than lighting for reading/crafting/repairing.
  3. Placing objects. I think many players would appreciate this. Just like with the lantern and the bedroll I would love to be able to place objects where I want them. Going out for a scavenge run and coming back with an extra rifle or cans of food It would be a awesome to be able to stock up my shelves. Having them inside containers is fine but think this would really be a nice addition for us that want to create a nice home in the darkness.
  4. Compass. I am guessing this is a common request and I could see the devs not putting this in the game for a reason. That said I find the navigation in this game really hard at times. Even though I have played all the maps multiple times I find the map pretty much useless at times. We get no real indication for elevation and for some reason the map doesn't even center on my location when I use it. Again I can see this being a choice that devs have made but I don't like it. It makes me even more confused about where I am than I need to. Most parts of the maps have very similar features and a compass would be great help in navigating the terrain.
  5. Thermos. A way to store hot water to carry with us on long cold trips. Heavy but useful. There would be tons of them in place like Bear Island.
  6. Mice. Little critters that can be trapped using deadfalls inside of buildings. Having food/gear stored incorrectly will make them destroy and or eat it when you are not looking. These could be semi random encounters as not to pester the player to much.

Like I said, I love the game. It's really inspiring and as long as the content keeps coming I will keep playing it and recommending it to friends.

I like your ideas but regarding the one about a thermos... I used to own a modern made one (thermos brand, old style metal) and honestly on a not especially cold morning (NOT less than 32° F), after about one and a half hours, coffee that had been piping hot when I poured it in, was only lukewarm. I don't know if the vintage Thermos' are more effective but I wasn't impressed especially when I bought it thinking my coffee would be hotter for longer.

1. We have the crampons now so I'm not against or for a climbing feat

2.love the idea of candle, not being able to read or repair due to it being dark and not having a fire is generally annoying the only thing I'm unsure of is how candle would work do they burn out (they should) If so what do you do to replenish them?

3.you can already place items I don't know what it is on PC but on PS4 you drop everything then press L2 to move it where you like.

4. You already said you could guess why the devs wouldn't add a compass  so you may already know this. as much as I agree that navigation isn't exactly easy I disagree with this as lore wise it wouldn't work the geomagnetic storm that caused the power to go out would cause compasses to spin wildly. (That being said  if they haven't changed anything you can drop an arrow and it will point exactly north) I do wish there was an option in custom sandbox to put a tracker on the map to show the players position. It already exists in wintermute so all they would have to do is give an option to toggle it on or off in custom mode.

5. Would love a way to keep things hot for longer periods of time I agree with this suggestion

6. More animals are always a plus in my book as long as it's properly implemented i.e not to OP too many animals then meat would be more plentiful than it already is. Not for sure I like the idea of mice destroying my gear though that sounds like it might be more annoying than anything else.

Like I said, I love the game. It's really inspiring and as long as the content keeps coming I will keep playing it and recommending it to friends.

1) There is already a feat that increases stamina refresh, including when one takes a short rest on a ledge when climbing.  Coffee and stims refresh the fatique component, and now crampons improve climbing further... and good weight management helps as well.  I don't think another feat to "grind" for (e.g. climb 1,000 ropes) is called for.

2) Don't really care either way about candles.

3) Placing objects can be done with any object that is able to be picked up.  The rest are part of the art background which would take a major reprogramming effort to make them "interactable."  Not worth it, IMO.

4) Compasses don't work with the lore of the event that brought Will's plane down.  There are many, many ways to discover direction and to mark paths in the game already.  Using spray cans, locations anywhere can now even be marked on the map.  The addition of compasses specifically is not worth it, IMO.  Just another gadget that takes up weight in the backpack and, therefore, will I would likely either not bother picking it up or wind up leaving it in a container someplace and never using it.

5) Thermos.  I see a problem with it in that the teas and water are all coded and identified by their containers not the liquid... and there is no way to pour a liquid in the game.  I think this would take a lot of effort to change to accommodate a thermos container that, realistically could be carrying any hot drink.  Hot water currently has no benefit.  It satiates thirst and does not warm the character, unlike the teas, so carrying water in the thermos is of no benefit anyways.  Again, just another gadget taking up weight that I would likely not use.

6) What do you mean about trapping using "deadfalls."  Trappable mice would become too convenient a means of "indoor hunting" for food, IMO.  They should be like the crows, there but untouchable.  Recent discussions on the "Risky Meat" thread about animals stealing meat stored outdoors is more relevant, iMO.  Mice could be used as an excuse for allowing food stored on the floor to despawn when it hits a "ruined" condition... and I'm in favor of that happening for reasons I've already stated on that thread.

1. So the crampons help with climbing ropes? I haven't noticed any improvements but you might be right. Right now I can just about climb the tallest ropes from max energy to about a 5th remaining at the top.(A huge cost when I also need to find shelter after that).

2. I would guess that these would have to be a found object, nothing you would be able to create. But like I said most cabins should have a store of candles. I played some more last night and found myself having nothing to do until midnight. I didn't want to waste any firewood on just repairing clothes or reading. I guess I could have passed the time but I don't like doing that. I want to play the game and make the most out of every hour.

3. Damn I had totally missed this. I started placing stuff last night after figuring out how to do it. How did you guys learn about this feature?

4. Yeah I agree. I had not thought about that. But again, the storm seems to happen at certain points in time? Maybe the devs could work more on the map or something. Right now I feel like they have gone more for looks than function. If I was mapping an area I would make sure to indicate elevation: slopes, impenetrable terrain, cars, structures, roads and so on. Now when I find a place filled with stuff like just yesterday I got to Pleasant Valley from Timber Wolf Mountain(A great place to live btw) and climbed down a rope to the ruined cabin. I remembered that the bunker was behind a log there. I found it started charting the area and there was nothing. The bunker wasn't marked and neither the burnt down cabin with the stove. That is pretty immersion breaking for me. Sure I could put down a spray symbol but I don't always have that with me. The good thing about the spray is that it doesn't take long time to use. I was charting a spot in Timber Wolf and while I was doing it I could see a bear timelapsing into view just in front of me. My character must be the most focused person ever not to notice a freaking alfa predator slowly walking in to eat him :D

5. Yeah this was just something I had at the top of my head. Drinking hot water should really be the same as drinking tea or coffee but it isn't high on my list.

6. I HATE mice and rats IRL so the only reason I am suggesting it is that these are active even during winter and seek out man made structures for shelter and warmth as most homeowners can attest to. Like with the wolves that I also hate in the game, they are my best friend at times as a source of food. My original survivalist is Called Wolfeater and he has killed and eaten over a 100 wolves. So the mice could be something like that. A pest but also a source of food(very little). A mouse contains only like 30 calories so this is this would not be a sustainable way to live.

7. Broth. So I am a huge survival nerd. I love being in the real nature as well in video games. One thing that survivalist often to do conserv calories is to make broths. Fishheadsoup and so on. The reason for doing this as opposed to frying or grilling food is that you retain more nutrients. When frying food you risk burning parts of it, losing fat content. So why not use that heavy pot to make a nice broth or stew. Throw in some mushrooms and you get a nice bonus. Let's say a max of 500 Cals for one mug of broth. You can add different meats, cattail stalks etc to get different results. Lets say one piece of meat and one veg. And let the container be the recycled can if you want to carry it with you.

My suggestions are just my thoughts on how to make the game grow. I make games on my spare time I know that it is really hard work and you need to put a lot of thought into every aspect, and Hinterland has surely done just that. Otherwise I would not be here talking about the game. Tons of other people make suggestions and I am glad that the Studio is moving forward according to their vision and not ours. If studios would listen to fans to much I think games risk becoming bland and uninteresting. That said I just can't help myself coming up with these ideas while I play the game :D

1. I find taking a rest on a ledge to be a trap. I see those pieces of wood laying there as both bait and a warning. Like the remnant of a previous climber being forced to give up some of his precious resources in order to keep climbing. As long as I get over encumbered after I start climbing I can always keep going. Getting stuck on one of those ledges is fine if I have the means to rest up without freezing to death. Not sure which feat you are referencing but I will have to check it out. Going up Timber Wolf Mountain this week took me like three days just because of all of the ropes I needed to climb. Again, I get it but I would like to get something to reduce the grind after 300 Hours played. I am sure many of you have all of the badges but some of them are pretty silly in how much grinding I need to to. I have lit 500 fires and I am only halfway to getting the fire badge. Sure the badge would really make the harder difficulties a lot easier but what is wrong with that? It is still hard.

2. We probably have different play styles but I would love to hear some of your suggestions. Maybe you have a thread already?

3. I found this function finally! Thanks!

4. Hm yeah. Like I said before I don't know if the phenomenon is a constant thing or just at certain times? I guess I could buy it either or but like I also said the map is a bit lacking.

5. You might be right. But the I don't think that this would be much of a coding challenge for the Hinterland team, and also we already have lots of stuff in the game that is pretty much useless or at least next to useless(IMO). Like the flashlight, ammo crafting supplies, tools, hammer and so on. Sure I might have had use of these once or twice but they don't really add enough value for the weight they have. That said I don't mind them being in the game. It all adds to the emersion and playing styles available to us.

6. Sorry. A deadfall trap is just a simple trap where you have a heavy object being triggered to fall on the animal. For a mouse this could be a large rock or something like that. Yeah on my most recent playthru I run into a lot of bad food. Would like to have a way to get rid of it. "Discard" or like you said. Having it despawn. Like I said earlier the mice would probably be very little food but trapping them would give us something to do and add some more life into the game. I really don't like having animals in the game that are untouchable. That really breaks the emersion for me. I know the point of the game is that the wilderness is a beautiful but unforgiving place but I still appreciate every bit of life in it(and being able to eat it :D ).

1) By "taking a short rest" on a ledge, I don't mean "taking a nap" - I mean getting off the rope and allowing the character to catch their breath.  This causes the stamina (aka sprint) meter on the lower right-hand side to refresh.  If one is too fatigued (lower left-hand meter), then it's best to take a nap at the bottom of the rope before starting to climb.  There is usually some sort of rock or tree that will shelter a fire for an hour or two at the bottom of a rope.  The feat I'm talking about is Snow Walker (Your Stamina bar recharges 20% faster).  Another feat "Straight to the Heart" also helps because Coffee, Energy Drinks and Stims last 25% longer.  Coffee, etc. helps to replenish your fatigue meter without sleeping and the less you are fatigued, the more you can carry and the faster you will climb a rope.

4) The map doesn't prevent you from making arrows and symbols in the snow with sticks.  Tinder plugs and cat tail heads also work well for this, particularly after you get Firestarting 2 or 3 and they become unnecessary for lighting fires.  To find a constant direction within a zone, drop a stick... it falls pointing the same way every time.  Caves and such are marked with rosehips, old man's beard, or reshi mushrooms.  Those plants aren't just helter-skelter items on the map... they are clues that Hinterland has built into the terrain.  There are also fallen trees that point in to certain features.  Perhaps you haven't noticed this.

6) I know what a deadfall trap is.  I just don't see the point of it.  There is no need to make mice a convenient food source that one doesn't have to go outside in the cold to hunt... and outside, there's stones to throw at rabbits and rabbit snares if one wants to catch them that way.  There is enough food in this game even on Interloper.  So, IMO, it's just another gadget (largely useless item as you described in point 5) added to the game that I'll likely never use.

Added coding for the sake of adding more "largely useless" items or reams of AI dependent animals, IMO, just bloats the game and, eventually, makes it less stable and perhaps even unplayable on lower end systems.  That's my concern... I want to be assured they can finish the game as being playable on the console I bought it on.  I don't want to be forced to upgrade just to finish a game and story I started a few years ago.

1. The in game description of the crampons says "Traction, for your feet. Rope climbing drains less Stamina, Sprains are less frequent, and you can travel with more confidence over Weak Ice"

for the tallest ropes there should be ledges that you can stop off at to let your stamina recover. just watch your fatigue as you don't want it to drop too low or you'll get stuck on this ledge it's best to have a few cups of coffee or the energy drink.

2. If you can create it then this would probably mean the addition of a new item, wax or the ability to create wax.

3.lol don't worry it took me a while to discover this as well. I discovered it last year accidentally after bumping L2 while looking at a pile of items I had dropped.

4. I think you may be getting the Aurora and geomagnetic storm mixed up the storm is always going on, the aurora is just a side effect of the changes in the magnetic field. The picture on the left is what the magnetic field should look like but in the long dark it looks more like the one on the right. This is why compasses wouldn't work

5. Lol yeah I always found it kin6 hilarious that our survivor could drink straight boiling water from the campfire and not get any effect from it like warmth or burns (seriously though it should be burns lol)

6. Not against new animals just don't like the earlier suggestion that mice can destroy gear that as I said before just sounds annoying.

7. Not against this. it could open for a more dynamic cooking system where we could properly make dishes.

Hinterland made the wish list for exactly that reason, to listen they obviously won't add everything if they did this game would derail massively imagine If they added  grenades to the game, and yes I know someone who thinks grenades should be in this game 😂

2.love the idea of candle, not being able to read or repair due to it being dark and not having a fire is generally annoying the only thing I'm unsure of is how candle would work do they burn out (they should) If so what do you do to replenish them?

Agree  ^^^^. So, being from the Southern United States people around here made/make homemade soap from rendered animal fat, (mostly pig fat) along with lye. Deer are fairly lean animals, but would still render out some fat that could be used. Now a bear, there's a fat storage farm, along with being an animal that's already in game and fairly rare and dangerous. Talk about risk/reward to the nth degree, that would make candles not too common, and raise the level of rarity exceptionally high.

In the Long Dark literally I've been there in the dark waking up fully rested with sometimes several hours before daylight comes around. A candle would be a welcomed item.

I completely agree. Anything that makes TLD more immersive is 100% in my book.
