Aurora Carter Hydro Dam

Ice Hole

Recommended Posts

During an aurora Carter Hydro Dam lights up with deadly sparks.  For my travels I just make sure not to pass through at night.

Has anyone navigated through this area and managed to bypass the electricity?

Is it possible to place something down to negate the sparks?

Can certain boots and gloves offer protection from being fried?

Has Carter Hydro Dam been cursed by Fluffy?

Might have to science through this to uncover the secrets.

Avoiding Carter whilst the aurorae are out is a good call, in my experience.

That being said, I recently had the misfortune to be caught in the upper section during a flareup. I played it safe and found a good spot to wait it out, but I do recall trying to bypass the hazards during my playthrough of storymode, where death is thankfully only an inconvenience.
I died, a lot.
From what I understand, the layout of the dam is slightly different in WINTERMUTE- for one thing, the elevator becomes functional when the aurorae are out- but for the most part, it's identical to that of survival mode. There is always a way to directly avoid being burnt by the loose wiring- for example, when entering the generator room from the lower half of the dam (e.g. if you're traveling from Pleasant Valley to Mystery Lake), you'll be forced to take a left immediately. There's always a length of mountaineering rope hanging from a section of rebar nearby, allowing you to avoid injury. Likewise, in the lower section, you'll be faced with a similar problem- a turbine room full of loose wires- but by breaking down some of the crates that are strewn around, you should be able to make your way through.
I've never tried to negate the sparks, either by placing anything down or by wearing particular clothes. That's a good thought, though I'd be surprised if a certain set of clothing is more resistant to electricity. Seems more than a little situational, but who knows? One thing that could feasibly be a factor is the in-game protection system that clothing provides- for instance, the moose-hide cloak offers a pretty hefty bonus, as do the wolf and bear-skin coats. However, I'm not sure if that bonus applies to every damage event, or only to those sustained through struggles with wildlife.
It's a pretty safe bet that fluffy has cursed the entire place. It's a deathrap with the aurorae present.

Will and Astrid seem to lack the parkour skill to lift their legs over things while walking. :D

I don't even try to traverse carter dam during an aurora anymore. I got burned and lost about 30% of my condition once. Now I just put my bedroll down and sleep it out.

Yeah, it's dangerous in there. Heh, I remember when I first got the game I laid out my bedroll in the corridor of death in the dam, not realising that if an aurora came out there'd be electricity. I was just a-sleepin' away and then there's this "brrrzp" and I'd died of burns. I was like "what the hell...?"

As far as I know, there isn't. however, there are ways around most of them. However, the wires in the long corridor between the upper dam entrance and the turbine room are not possible to work around. If an aurora comes while you're in the dam, you're on one side of those wires or the other and that's where you will remain until it's over. Another set of wires that are impassable are in the Lower Dam at the bottom of the stairs that start take you upwards again to where you entrance to the dam from the Winding River side. You're on one side or the other of those wires when the aurora starts and you'll stay there or you'll be dead.

The first test is going to be placing items that offer resistance to electricity on top of Sparky.  The item also will need to cover a large area.

Some items to try are:

bedroll, windbreaker, cured deerskin mooseskin bearskin

The best solution to avoid sparks would be to use this broken window.

On the other side is a ladder and chair, so maybe this could be a future mechanic to assist in going through from the other side.

From here the rope climb brings us down to the Lower Dam door.

This route towards Winding River should avoid the electricity if new mechanics are introduced.

Returning from WR means entering the window and this leads to additional hot spots.

While waiting for the hides to cure an aurora began.

Battery suggested to go and see the sparks.

During an aurora the sparks started to excite Battery.

Battery did not seem to change.

The burns almost killed me.

Placed Battery down on top of the wires.

Battery told me it was safe.

Crossed over and died.
