  1. I was performing test in my voyager run. Set 6 traps for 50 days in the rabbit grove and gathered them every day. If I was to keep well fed bonus, I would not achieve it. I caught around 150 rabbits and yield 166kg of meat. This would left me around 50 000 kCal in red number. But if the point is to survive while starving through day and eat only before going to bed, I would be around 50 000 kCal in black numbers. Of course numbers for higher difficulties will differ. And it was around day 300 so I dont know how much wildlife diminish after day 500.

The only investment into this was around 10 pieces of reclaimed wood and guts. (4 traps was buffer for replacing broken ones) End status of materials was 10  pieces of reclaimed wood and more than 100 guts.

So I think rabbit trapping combined with fishing is more than capable to keep voyager alive. In fact that was my character living at the test. Plus occasional visit from the brotherhood of fury paw. They tried to get my earnings, so they were on the menu as well.

BTW anyone in needs some rabbit furs, you can head to Coastal Highway, Jackrabbit island. There is around 150 pelts free to take :D

Come on, let's be reasonable here...do I really need to include in my question, "...where there are rabbits..."?

I am sorry. I did not get it. You know. Rabbitses can be pretty sneaky. They hide all day, then jump of the snow right into your trap.

BTW If I remember it correctly, there is one rabbit in a cave. It spooked me when I saw him first time thinking that the movement is another cave wolf.

  3. You can find worse place to place trap. For example inside Quonset garage or inside caves.

6 traps placed on correct place was almost able to feed my voyager character. And as per guts. One trap was able to catch more than one rabbit usually. So there was profit as well. Plus I have ton of rabbit furs. So I plan to create hats, leave them outside and repair them to get elusive level 5 in repairing.

  4. For the food decay, there is table: https://thelongdark.fandom.com/wiki/Decay I dont know how accurate it is. I usually store food outside container. This way it does not disappear when reaches 0 condition.

My strategy is to aim to cooking level 5 as early as I can. Then you can forget food poisoning and intestinal parasites. My way is to get bear or moose. Carve it to 100grams - 250grams pieces by cancelling carving. Then you have lot of small pieces and cooking can be improved quickly. Some calls it exploit. But I think of it that when you are inexperienced cook, you dont start with 1 kilo steaks, you do smaller.

  5. I feel your pain. 5 times frostbite, it means all linbs plus head if I get it correctly. It is little too much. I do not have personal experience with frostbite. But from what I know it is possible even for trained people. One can go sleep and suddenly he realise his fingers are black. Is it possible, there was blizzard during your sleep? It can freeze your clothes fast.

The same thing happened to me in a building where wolves in bleak inlet couldn't get in, it was ridiculous, but with a few six-shot shots, I spooked the wolf and it went back the way it came. It was really ridiculous and a little funny.

Same for me. I was on the monkey path, on the part, where you have to shimy your way on roof beams. I looked back and one wolf was standing on the platform, where I was few seconds before. Quick draw revolver solved it.

After while I was standing on platform in dock. There is big engine block. Its top is in one floor height. Wolf was running on the ground towards me. His trajectory was through that engine block. When his head touched it, the wolf was suddenly standing on top of the block.

But my problems were few updates back...

  7. The game saves are located in c:\Users\<YOUR_USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Hinterland\TheLongDark\ folder. You can copy them to some other location and put them back when needed.

If you have STEAM version, your saves can be backed up by the steam service.

Manual copy and returning back after your character dies... you know some see it as cheeting. When you need to repair game, go for it. But avoiding the character demise. IMHO it takes one part of the game experience away. But it is your game.

  8. Ingame carcasses (those which are already placed in game) rot away and disappear after few days from the point when you interact with them. Carcasses from your kills rot away and disappear after same period since you drop them. And meat bag is the same case and rot away after same time period. The only thing which do not disappear is already processed meat (and hide and guts). Plus when you put 0% item in some container or the items reach 0% when placed in container, it will disappear unless it can be furthermore harvested. It includes meat, hides and guts.

I think I had it happen to me one time when I added toilet water, it caused all my stored potable water to go bad. I thought It was odd because i got so used to taking a pitcher to the toilet without thinking twice.

That would be strange and new. And if you just thaw snow and not boil it, it will not make all your water to be not pottable. If you already have some pottable water and make some unpottable, these are stored separatelly in your inventory.

  10. I think the original question was what region to choose to have long term base. If not, I am sorry I got it wrong.

If it was the question, here is my answer: Dont choose. Set long term base in all of them. Personally in later game I tend to have long term base in all regions. Of course something like rifle revolver etc are not present in needed quantity to be stored in each region. But preparing good stash of food, fuel, tools in each region is good. When you decide to move, you need to have only weapon, sleeping bag (some plays it dangerously and walk without one) little water and some light non-stink food for travel. Tools you want for move from base to base are personal opinion.

After certain number of days in one region it seems the weather starts to be more harsh and game wants you to move and reset the weather by staying some time in another region. Dont know if it is confirmed or rumour, but anyway after longer period in one region one starts to feel itching and wants to move anyway.

But my experience is mainly from voyager difficulty and longest run is about 400 days.

  11. I would choose Anglers den. There is indoor location. Deers are behind corner (wolfs as well). There can be moose or two. The problem is, there is almost no animals on upper levels. Except of course one bear. The secluded house could be safe house. But you would hae to accept it is accessible only by rope.

  12. I did some test with Mr Expendable:

    1. I tried to move from the bridge where railing was present. It was not possible.
    2. Character moved to place without railing and walked out. It was possible and character would have died. But the fall is long. I think it would be 3 seconds. Escape and quit the game saved the character. (strange was my character was not crying during the fall)
    3. I let the character stand in mid of the bridge length (largest amplitude) on the edge of the bridge where the railing was missing. The bridge was swaying under feet, but character did not fell.
    4. The character was standing on one bridge entrance and aimed revolver at the oposite one. Then I hit forward without touching mouse. The movement was first smoth. But after half of the bridge, the character was like overcoming some obstacles or falling from steps. Character did not fall.

    Conclusion.

    • Bridge will not sway away from underneath your feet when you are standing.
    • Railings areas are safe. Of course only on the side of the railing.
    • One can fall from the bridge if not careful. Do not think you can just go forward. You need to compensate the bridge movements.

Lol. What about going to a cliff, drop them, right click and then jump. Probably dry quickly on the way down.

Yes it would dry them quickly. But the sploosh down there will wet them to 100% again.

  14. I think the correct method is put crampons on the table or on the ground. Then drop one cloth. Now right click on the cloth. Drag cloth over crampons and use the mouse wheel to rotate it here and there. This way you can dry them. :D

  15. I am not so sure it is only mind trick. Right now I was staying before the bridge from Miners Foly. Mid of the bridge was swaying. It was swaying so much, the mid of the width became almost edge. When I was crossing, I had to compensate for the sway. If I would go straight, the journey of my Astrid would get quick downwards direction.

I will test it later with my expendable Voyager. Astrid is aspiring to get 500 days badge.

  16. Are we sure that crampons are always 100% when found? On my Voyager run I have picked them, put them on on inner slot. Then went through the mine using two down ropes to moose area and Stone Shelf cave. I have not encountered any fight except shhoting moose which does not touched me. Now my crampons are 98%

Is it possible that there is some other decay definition? I would expect walking with crampons on rock bed of the cave could be breaking them fast. Because I walked with them through the mine (which contain veeery cold water) and in the cave. And 2% down is not nice on item which may not be repairable.
