option to turn off all alerts and warnings

This would be nice.  I was thinking the same with the weak ice warning too.  The sound (undeniably terrifying) is enough to alert one of the danger.

Been playing Voyager lately, and am actually enjoying how the sprains work much more.  If you take a long, straight path across a steep slope at the proper angle, you can get all the way down uninjured.  Not every time, but it works.  Also, I'm getting better at double checking my bandage supply.

just gotta make sure that you set it down every once in a while and create a new placement point

Also noticed you can't check status (I have HUD hidden) while scooting a book.  And no sprinting.  But yes, if you hear a wolf or a bear, time to drop it.

I didn't get armed in time, but the wolf fell in a good spot for me.  Still, that's more shoe leather gone. 😐 😄

  3. @piddy3825  Looking good.  And you've got beds right there.  I would have had to clear out those extra chairs so not to trip over em.

I'm just past day 56 or so, and am nearing completion of Coastal Highway.  Five more books to haul back that are staged at the Abandoned Lookout.  Then I'm going to set up camp at a fishing hut nearest the elevator mine shaft and wait for the aurora.

  4. I've got a good set of clothes, appropriate to frequent travelling and gear hauling on Voyager.  The expedition parka paired with a light shell is warm and wind resistant.  I'm using two pairs of snow pants, and although prone to damage, they're lightweight and warm.  I've also exchanged my insulated boots for running shoes.  They get wet much easier but the increase in mobility is paying off.  The setup wants mending often, and gets mangled in wolf struggles, so I carry adequate supplies with me.  I'm keeping the boots safe for a later time if necessary.

  5. So far, hunting on route has been enough to keep my book seeker well fed.  It's been mostly wolf encounters and the occasional deer.  Had some struggles, but also killed a few with revolver and rifle shots.  One wolf did me the favor of dropping dead on the road up to the mine entrance.

While cooking fish on the Coastal ice, I approached a deer carcass to supplement my meat supply, but two wolves nearby took notice.  I shot one dead with the rifle, and the other ran.  I harvested the deer meat, but had to wait until another day to go back for the guts.

  6. Something that might help (with overall familiarity) is to not do any mapping in your pilgrim runs. Just go for walks (or runs) and rely on memory.  Even following the wolves around when they bolt can be helpful.  Maybe it sounds weird, but it works for me. 🙂 It’s fun when you get a lucky surprise on one and can keep with it for a bit when it runs.

  7. I started a second DW in Desolation Point. To CH (I liked the placement of that fire, spooky approach), then Ravine - ML - MT - FM (a wacky, jagged route I took from Hat Creek, to the fire, to the Bleak Inlet cave, with several weak ice warnings).  In BI, took the outer route around to the road, past the Cannery, to the fire(#6), then made a last stand atop the Broken Lighthouse.  All I used were lures and the fog disperse.  I wish I had saved the latter, so I could have hung on long enough to see the DW come up to get me, but I got choked out first.  I put a ward up at the end for a screenshot, along with burning all the flares I had left.

I'll catch up on reading a lot of posts about the event in the coming days, but probably won't go again myself.  It looked and sounded great tho.

  8. What about the space at the bottom of the Coastal Highway mine elevator?  I've still never been down there, but will have to go and check it eventually for books.  I'm getting them out of there as fast as I can though.  ⛏️😀

That actually leaves you with the Hunting Lodge in Broken Railroad

It's a robust structure indeed, and roomy to spare with two floors and the basement.  If seismic activity doesn't topple the mountain out from underneath, it should last for quite a while unattended.  As long as the roof and windows were to stay sound.  That's a lot of trips through wolf inhabited lands...

  10. @Rusty  Great choice of book and Libraries!  I have 'A Canticle for Liebowitz' on audio, and have been thinking it's time to listen to it again soon.  What's also interesting about your choice of buildings is that they cover a wide range of condition.

I've been considering the buildings and the question, "What happens when their caretakers are no more?".  The Farmhouse would need some serious reinforcement to last even a century.  And by 'last', I mean keep the books safe from the elements.  The churches at least have steep roofs, so should shed the snow much better.  Well, not as much the Stone Church in it's current state, but were it repaired..

  11. “I had already found that it was not good to be alone, and so made companionship with what there was around me, sometimes with the universe and sometimes with my own insignificant self; but my books were always my friends, let fail all else.”

Yes.  So, maybe not an option for Survival Mode, but story mode has NPCs to help pull sleds with aircraft pieces up slopes using lifting tackle.

I have a vague recollection of that movie too.  Not in theater, but from The Movie Channel I think.

Store them in a place the game is telling you and read them to get the knowledge. Then use this knowledge to reach one part of the goal. This could be for example learning how to build a boat (or a bow and arows) and then actually building it/them.

Better yet, a flying boat.  There are materials from three plane crashes and numerous boats.  Since there are no runways on the maps we have, a water/ice take-off seems the only option.  Perhaps sled hauling of materials and lifting tackle would need to be introduced as well.

  14. Been having a busy weekend outside, but had time to be there for opening night.  Chose to start in Broken Railroad because I figured the Muskeg would be a really creepy place to see.  It didn't disappoint.  As expected though, I bought it on the Mystery Lake ice, investigating the scenery.

So, thanks to Hinterland for the two weeks.  I've been tempted to read everyone's posts (I admit, I peeked a bit), and am looking forward to it.

  15. I’m not sure how much editing I’ll be doing, but wanted to post an example.  Either way, it’s my understanding that everything here on the forum is the property of Hinterland and any work on a poster’s part is obviously voluntary.

  16. Maybe we should discuss screenshot editing.  Good?  Good methods or tools?   Bad?  Lines that shouldn't be crossed?

    Here's an unedited screenshot:

I got at least two of those mountain books from Coastal Highway to the Farmhouse, and set up some appropriate gear for Mountaineering 1, 2 & 3.  The lighting was fine, but I could have used a storm lantern or fire, or I could have enhanced it in some way outside of the game.  I tend toward doing as little editing as possible, mostly for the sake of time, and because I very much like how things appear in the game.  This next one is about the extent of my editing prowess, and I'm hoping not to have violated any forum rules.  It's simple resizing, copy and paste, with some effects and text.

Currently this idea constitutes more of a personal quest to keep playing in the sandbox fun and interesting and really the only way to share the fruits of our labor and the enjoyment we get out of playing the game is by sharing our screenshots.  Plus that way I know Screenshot isn't lying to me when he says he's got 10 copies of the Sewing Primer series... lol

😄 before my next post, I’ll reread the forum rules.

Anyway, this is how I see it as well.

  18. Glad for your post @Karl Grylls, and your input. 🙂:coffee:  Your screenshot of the Lighthouse was certainly well timed when the idea first came up, so thank you.

Even though I play survival mode, I think expanding the functions of books in story mode, as you suggest, is a good idea.  I especially like the idea of fixing a boat using knowledge gained in various ways. Perhaps one could eventually use the Harbinger boat in Bleak Inlet.

But in the next run i will do it along the way

This is a good point.  Since collecting all the books is a very large task, it makes sense that it could be done alongside a player's other activities and goals.
