miah999
Don't take everything PETA says as gospel, they are a political group with an agenda, perfectly willing to bend the truth to their needs. Also you should note that only bear traps are annoyingly heavy, weighing as much as 30 pounds, wolf traps are only about five pounds, you can easily carry quite a few of them. As for leg traps vs. "humane" traps, all catch animals indiscriminately which is why trapping season, is before the targeted animals breading seasons, legally trapped animals do not have any young to get back to. All trapping and hunting are necessary conservation measures required for animal population control, once humans eliminated all the major predators from an area, it becomes our job to control the animal populations so that our cities are not over run with mink and deer. I ask everyone to try and avoid this subject in the future, debating animal cruelty in regards to animals made of pixels is pointless. This is the last thing I'll say on the topic. I'm not against animal hunting But the information I got suggest that animal traps will be OP in the long dark so there has to be a disadvantage to make the traps balance Also PETA isn't People for the Ethical Treatment of animals PETA real name is People Eat Tasty Animals
miah999
They shouldn't be any more effective then the current snares, what makes traps work effectively in real life is bait, and TLD doesn't have a real bait system. The way to balance more advanced trapping, would be with a Trapping Skill, that would unlock more effective traps, and trap baiting. Now it's true you could end up with power creep, but if Hinterland alters animal spawning so that animals on replenish after a given time (like a breeding season). Then trapping would be balanced against the chance of over hunting, and depleting the animal population. There are a lot of really complex systems you could model that would balance the game's wildlife vs. human meta-game. Some of these would make much more sense one the full-season sandbox arrives. (If that happens, of course).

Then, like in real life, there will be no animals left and nothing to repopulate the area for a season or two. If that level of simulation is ever added (plus an NPC or guide book to instruct you on the risks) it would make an excellent lesson on the necessities of ethical wildlife management. There is after all a big difference between hunters/trappers and poachers.
