,don't pay mind to people whining over this "paid" DLC. They should just grow up and get over it.

I don't think I recall anyone here whining about the new paid structure. There have been legitimate concerns and worries expressed and discussed about the nature of the new content, but the vast majority of us are more than happy with the financial proposal.

Many of us have been playing since near the beginning ten years go. We are extremely grateful to Hinterland for their ethics in this regard because it is indeed rare.

The only people who have legitimately raised concerns regarding paying for content in advance they may not like is fair, and there is nothing wrong saying you'd rather see what the "new" game will be like before you buy it. And those who paid for a story driven game and are still waiting for the final episode are justified in being put out.

But nowhere in this thread bar maybe one or two short comments have I seen whining.

In fact most of us agree this is pretty much the most beautiful game created.

I think, there could be some trading post or similar things. Something like post with ads on it. "I will trade 10 cured wolf pelts for 5 rifle rounds. Bring them to my farm. Molly"

My concern with this is that it is story mode leaking into Survival, as @ManicManiac said previously.

As illustrated by the devs splitting the games in two (which is the right move I feel) they are very much separate games.

There are many survival players who have never touched story mode, myself included.

To further complicate matters by splitting the games but bringing story mode elements into Survival just doesn't feel right to me.

However as already said by many, if there was an option to turn it off, then it wouldn't be an issue.

OK, now I know what you meant when discussing your FPS issues.

Please forgive the fact I had to take a photo of my TLD settings  for some reason I only get an image of the main menu when I take a screenshot. It should be clear enough.

Go to the Settings Menu, then into "Quality". You should see this screen.

    20221101_042926.thumb.jpg.80bc58add129314fe5c3d51a2b075e5d.jpg

At the top of the screen you will see "High" selected on my settings. You can use this to change the overall quality settings using predetermined categories, a bit like choosing a difficulty level when in a custom game.

As a general rule of thumb, higher settings means lower FPS, lower settings mean higher FPS. However the accuracy of this does depend a lot on the individual machine, but it's a good place to start thinking about how you want to change things.

Just bear in mind that lowering the Quality to increase FPS does, well lower the graphics quality! It may not be just the FPS which isn't suiting you, it could also be things like draw distance. So having a decent length of play on each setting is a good idea to find out what works for you and what doesn't.

The only way for you to find a setting that suits you is to take the plunge and try a few different things. Don't worry, you can't break anything! Try playing on each standard setting first then see how it suits your machine, your eyes, your sinuses and your personal preference.

I'd advise  setting up a separate save just to play around with the settings, but you shouldn't have any issues. They are there to be used and changed.

I don't think your laptop is the issue my darling, from what you've told me it sounds like you made sure it met the minimum requirements.

Therefore you need to take the plunge and play around with these Quality settings to find one that works both for you and your laptop. If you still can't then we can look at some fine tuning.

We really need to get you on the laptop. Yes there are still bugs on a PC but the game is generally more stable than on console. I honestly think the difficulty you've been having with your FPS and other Quality settings not suiting you lie within this section.

    Happy to clarify.

You can find (almost) everything you need to know about this here: https://hinterlandgames.com/innovation-and-intellectual-property-rights

You cannot reproduce elements of the game (images or otherwise) for profit. We've seen Survivors reproduce and print labels for things like Pinnacle Peaches as part of a cosplay, and that's not a problem. It only becomes an issue when work is advertised or reproduced without our permission.

We appreciate the check-in, and we're happy to clarify other questions as they arise!

Great, thank you very much for this response. Indeed it is as I thought, but full clarification is appreciated.

From a judicial perspective this isn't this cut and dry at all. (I'm not a lawyer, but I deal in intellectual property. Still: this is not legal advice, but an unqualified opinion on which should not be acted upon nor be referred to.)

In fact you do not own The Long Dark, not your copy of it, not even the right to run the game. You have paid an amount of money for which in exchange the copyright owners grant you the revocable license to use their copyrighted material in the way explicitly stated in the license.

Since Hinterland owns all material depicted in that screenshot technically they own the screenshot, not you. However, due to limitations to copyright most jurisdictions have implemented, like §107 17 USC (which is based on the 1710 Statue of Anne common law tradition), which are understood as "Fair Use" or "Fair Dealing". So printing a screenshot for your own amusement and hanging it on your wall would fall under those guidelines, even if not explicitly permitted.

However sending a screenshot to a company to print it and make a profit of it would not count as "Fair Use" in the sense that it does not serve public education or furthering the creative effort of original intellectual property, but could indeed be considered copyright infringement since the act of reproducing copyrighted material does occur not within aforementioned boundaries, a fact exacerbated by being motivated by profit alone, and as such would indeed require written statement of the copyright owners permitting such use.

It's the same reason you can make a copy of a VHS tape with The Lion King for yourself and keep it for yourself, but you cannot pay a company to make a copy of it for you.

Thank you Jeff. I don't know as many of the technicalities as you clearly do but I certainly thought the restrictions were along these lines. Your knowledge is greatly appreciated as always.

Hi-res screenshot and send it off to a poster-maker?

Would that be allowed Hozz? Not sure if a direct print would infringe something somewhere? Fan art is different, it isn't a direct reproduction.

    @Admin could you please clarify?

Ok Ive just had this bug again... I left the save in the car near crumbling highway.. switching it back on I instantly got multiple sprains and lost half my clothes and life..

    Oh good lord 🙈

I really do wonder if the game is more stable on the PC than XBox; yes I do get a few bugs but nothing as serious as you consistently do.

This is definitely not good. I'm sorry I can't be of any help other than to offer my sympathy!

Tell me where I can loot some red wine while I wait!

Sorry mate, the best you'll get there is sardines! 🤷‍♀️ I feel your pain. I think most people who have spent any time getting to the ammo bench have had the same issue. Always an aurora when you don't need one.

Fingers crossed you get one soon 🤞

  9. Argh! Not cool, dying to a bug. Even my dodgy maths can work out you should have been warming up.

You did bloody well surviving TWM; that's a rough place even for experienced Lopers. I'm really annoyed on your behalf.

I think @Leeanda and I can start being ourselves again. Clearly the insults and discouragement didn't work either.

This is a tough challenge. I admire your tenacity in continuing to try!

  10. I've honestly never seen it, not even a hint of it. I know I'm not the most observant but I'm sure I'd notice entire limbs vanishing in front of me. Looks like I've just been very lucky thank goodness!

Hopefully whatever they are doing with the "new" game will eliminate this bug. I've not seen it before thankfully, its not great to be losing entire limbs of firewood!

  12. Yes that does make sense chick. And you know all the maps incredibly well and spend a lot of time going place to place so are in a good position to notice something like this. I don't touch Blackrock with a bargepole and as a result forgot about some of the newer transitions as well so haven't picked it up.

But thinking about it, yes the Ash Canyon transition cave from Deer Clearing is fairly light. It's a good point about this possibly being intentional for future lighting changes. Will be interesting to see. They did such a beautiful job with the variable lighting in AC, incredibly realistic and atmospheric, it's then harder to accept the glaring inconsistencies elsewhere.
