There's always a bedroll on the map, yes, but it has 3 or even 4 different locations.

Well I never managed that. And I've been through that cave ... a lot.

I've managed to avoid being attacked, but of course I've been roadblocked and had to turn back.

I suggest: a new weapon shotgun(that could be used to hunt birds)

new bird types such as wild turkey or even a quail. new animal types such as raccon, arctic fox(not dangeros ones),wolverine, bison,(the dangerous ones)

a new consumable scent eliminator(It can eliminate scent so wolves and bears cant track you) new trap types big ones for bear, small ones for wolf etc.(plus being able to bait traps this will give you a bigger chance to trap something)

new plant types such as hazel, chery, apple, maple tree.also new plants:cranberry but also poisonous ones that can be used to make poison.

    Thanks for reading.

I agree that a new passive animal, with a little more meat than the rabbit and for example craftable ear wraps, would enrichen the game. I don't know if there's any skunk in northern Canada but it would cool to create a smelly tool (with a stronger scent than guts and meat) to lure the wildlife elsewhere when you want to do long time harvests like bear or moose. Though the skunk would have to be rare like the moose or the game would become way too easy.

  3. There are 2 accessible birch sapling locations between carter hydro dam and camp office. If you follow the river starting from dam, there is a spot on the left after a minute or so. The other spot is further down the river just before you reach the lake, among the birch trees on the left hand side. There's also a sapling a short climb up the mountain infront of camp office, on the right hand side, I think it's probably maple though. More Birch is on the same mountain but on the left side of the mountain closer to red train wagons.

Guess what guys. It was the most longest 35 days in this game. Guy met his makers at Forlorn waters. I think i rushed bit too much for going to forge that dude couldn't handle it. My question is if you go through ice do you drown immediately or was this combination of low healt and go through ice?

My previous record was 1.5 days so this was significant improvement and i learned a lot. So new start and with much better understanding what to do and what not to.

Well done crushing your old record. What route do you take to the forge coming from ML? I used to go left and keep to the mountainside but ended up in bad shape many times. After I changed route to go left at the the derailed red wagons, across the ice through the small islands  everything went smoother and I got loads of cattail and tea ingredients on the way as a bonus. Will be a little tricky the first time so choose a day with clear sight.

Iv tried a few runs at HRV, but I can't find any shelter, so I kinda don't like it. Id like to know Im not going to freeze to death if my fire goes out. o.o

If you head for an ice Cave entrance you'll likely find some clothes that you can recycle and use for snow shelter and sleep 2-3 hrs at a time. But there's a bedroll in ice cave if I remember correctly and a decent cave by the western mountainside that rarely goes below freezing temp if you got basic clothing. Lumpy the mad wolf may be avoided by cutting corners carefully.

Same here, I just want the story and do not want to deal with this silly timberwolf mechanic.

How do we turn off the timberwolves or make them run away like wolves in episode 1 & 2

Timberwolves run away when you deplete their morale meter. Shots hit decrease their morale more significantly than shots missed, though the latter has some effect too.

  7. Seems you like you were lucky and beat the probability of misfiring, or perhaps you can't misfire outside of a wildlife encounter.. The very first 20% revolver round I used misfired and like ajb wrote there was a different sound effect. The wolf I was aiming at wasn't discouraged whatsoever but took a big bite of me.

Since my take on Snowballing TWM I usually gravitate towards the Summit in all my games very, very early. Unless I have ludicrous loot luck - like finding Work Boots, Ear Wraps and two Ski Jackets - I pretty much leave most things by the wayside and get to TWM first. As of late I've been going HRV when my spawn "suggested" it, like starting FM or MT, but TWM always is a top consideration.

Same, it's awesome to get most essential items except some tools. I'm thinking of trying out HRV, the spawn next to ice cave. Where do you go for clothes there in early game, like mysterious signal fire for mackinaw jacket and ice cave for cache with combatpants and earwraps?

  9. Have you been looking for a real life person who spend their day living the way you play the long dark? Joe Rogan's podcast recently featured Glenn Villenueve who has spent much of his last 20 years in solitude in Alaska. Not only does he live in a hut by a lake swarmed by wolves, described pretty much like Mountaineer's hut in Timberwolf mountain. It is also located close to a ravine and it gets better. The guy is, just like Mackenzie, a pilot. When he doesn't hunt down the local wildlife and chop wood he has the wildlife hunt him right back.

I agree, that music really set the mood for the game.  I wish there was a way to turn it back on, too.

yes i sure do, that music brings me back!

Perhaps there will be more soundtrack options in the future, though I doubt Hinterland will prioritize it. Til then, you can always get in the right mood by muting the ingame music and listen to this :)

Just blown away all previous attempts. This time, I did not sleep until after I reached the summit!
Interloper run, lucky hacksaw spawn, took a short "nap" in cabin, but cabin to summit, no sleep on interloper!

Nicely done! You almost cut your record in half :) I didn't try taking a break in the Eastern Cave after tree bridge yet and probably gonna give that a go later today.  If I make it under 24hrs I'll be celebrating with a new years flare from the summit. Will keep you posted.

@manolitodeespana You can instantly bring up the fire interface by pressing left on the d-pad of a controller - at least that's what I do, using a PS4 controller, playing on PC. I'd be surprised if it wasn't the same controls on consoles. Do you know about this?

The other arrows on the D-pad are useful shortcuts too - probably the same as what @JAFO said the 1-4 keys so on a keyboard.

I just tried it and you're right! Can't believe I didn't do that for 2 years ^_^ when I do use the d-pad for decoy. Could've saved me a longrun when wolves were still discouraged by fire.. oh well I love to learn.

  13. 1 hour ago, JAFO said:

Not so. Just press the '4' key on your keyboard, and the fire lighting system pops up. (the one below the function keys, not the one on the numeric pad)

The 1, 2 & 3 keys also have uses.. I'll let you figure them out for yourself.

Sure thing, if you play on PC, though essential when you're on PS.

Its easy enough, best I can offer for the tree bridge route is to make sure you walk as you will need all the energy you can save to get up both ropes....after that second rope, there is no getting around it, you must sleep. If you only have the clothes you are wearing, you MUST get that snow shelter as close to inside that cave dome below the summit as possible, so that your fire will not go out if the weather flips on you during construction of the shelter and your resting period...

Other than that, a few birch bark along the way never hurt.

As for the hacksaw and other supply caches, sometimes it spawns inside the plane, if it does its at 100%, however anything above 70% is good enough. After raiding the summit, I typically follow a southern route to snag the cache by deer crossing, down to the big open cave to the south of that, down to the supply cache in the ravine, and then back to cabin with all the goodies.

Typically there is just enough food {some of it can be bad} for a few days visit....Crackers, sodas, coffee/tea, and beans n peaches.

Agreed, I prefer to preserve the energy and walk all the way, depending on the weather/hypothermia risk when making the long walk alongside deer clearing. After some freezing struggles I've found it's possible to place the snow shelter just inside the Cave dome, close to the left wall facing away from the entrance. But even inside the dome, there's like a 30-40% chance that a fire next to the cave wall will last the whole night, in my experience. As for descending, I like taking the "sprain route" behind the plane best, as it's literally a 10 min trip real time, much appreciated by my heavily loaded survivor :)

  15. My short take on the essentials upon spawn: 1. Get a pack of matches, make torches upon first fire and always use them for lighting a fire, 2. Find some basic clothing and ingredients for warms teas, 3. Go for the hacksaw, cut some limbs and put them on cure, then go for hammer, bedroll isn't necessary yet. Sounds wise to loot PV early, I also like to clear the advanced regions early, BI excepted, and save the easier regions with more indoor locations for later.

It was cold enough on Loper that a 20 degree warmth bonus wasn't enough to not freeze, I remember that :D

On Voyageur there's lots of food in the containers (*One container has nothing but MREs nearly a dozen on Voyageur, Stalker has these too, another has crackers and peanut butter. It's very different on Loper). I conserved a lot by starving during the day since I was just trying to pass the time. The survivor can last for a few days with no food if you don't mind the condition drop (*depending on the difficulty settings of course). Doing that I still had food when I came down the mountain.

(BIG EDIT: It's also important to note I did this in 2016, small parts of the game balance have changed since then I can't say for certain if the calorie burns are the same)

Oh that's right, forgot about the good ol' 1750cal MREs and the luxurious "problem" of carrying everything down the mountain and out to PV. I suppose I was expecting something similar on first interloper climb but there wasn't more than a few cans and some crackers. Don't think I ever ended up weighing more than 35kg after looting all containers including summit and descending (on loper).

  17. I agree with you that ep 3 was bland inbetween character interactions. The carrying objective was unrealistic (carrying a full grown person on your shoulders don't even slow you down noticably) but predictable and tedious. While the supporting roles never came close to the qualities of Jeremiah, in my opinion, it was great to get to know Astrid and that made it worthwhile to me. However, this was just the lettuce wasn't it? The dull lettuce between two real juicy chunks of hamburger meat and two aiolimarinated buns :)

  18. Do you miss the music of wintermute startup screen? It could be just me but I really, really miss the epic score that used to get me in adventure mood within seconds. The solitary piano elevated into a dramatic string score. Okay, the ep 3 tune is somewhat similar but just doesn't move me the same. If there was a button to activate the old music at game startup I'd be pressing it like I press the improvised hatchet in the wolfy's fur.

Perhaps you forgot that you miss it as well?

    Record?

I've been on the summit on day 1 many times. Shortest run was around 8 hrs with a Voyageur start in the TWM region back when I was still trying to get feats and achievements. I spent 2 months on the summit in a snow shelter to get the Pacifist and Silent Hunter achievements. It's probably possible to do it with less if you get a stim or coffee.

On Loper I've only done the summit once, but that was around day 100.

Cool, do you recall what the temp was on the summit day 100 on loper? I suppose it should be more challenging than climbing on day 1. I have yet to make it to the summit on difficulties below stalker, but living off the summit for 2 months, I suppose there was an abundance of food in the containers?

On  loper difficulty, Iv managed it in about 1 day....Got lucky, spawned near the cabin, hauled butt there, got lucky again and found the hacksaw, got the matchs, threw down a fire, took a nap, then started 'WALKING". Took a brief stop at the first supply cache and grabbed some food n coffee. Walked across tree bridge, snagged a quick snack and some coffee at the little cave, then hit the first rope, started snagging a bunch of stick along the way to the second supply cache and avoided the wolfy. Got a couple cloths, but not enough. Carried on to the second rope and got into the cave. Snagged all wood/coal for a 12 hour fire, and got to the cave below summit. Threw down a fire and had to salvage a sock and a hat for extra cloth to build the snow shelter. It was super tricky to put it close enough to the fire to keep me warm, but finally hit that sweet spot to put it down and not freeze to death. Hit the fire for 12 hours of burn time, took a nap in shelter, woke up and brewed some more coffee, and the summit was right there. Total time spent, I think was 22 hours.

Well done with under 24 hrs :) I'll try the tree bridge path when spawning in TWM and see if I can make it closer to 24 hrs, just for sports (though my hacksaw tend to break at the summit without a toolbox). So far I've made 1st snow shelter in "cave dome" after ravine, 2nd the same as you in the open cave just below summit. Though it seems a little risky to avoid the supply cache in ravine since it provides so much cloth needed for shelter, but who am I to say no to an opportunity to get naked in the wild.

  21. I wish I had your patience and made use of all available resources :) sounds like you'll be setting up an awesome endgame base with that much stuff. Not sure if you're looking for advice to leave stalker for interloper but it seems that you could get to know your maps better before moving on. Maximizing water output whenever there's a fire is the way to go (but not necessary on stalker), though leaving water and meat "everywhere" suggests that you aren't familiar with the easy/intermediate maps yet. I'd recommend leaving stuff where you know you'll return and explore all maps so that you can move on to endgame if you want to. As for radial, it's essential for setting up a quick fire if there's a wolf tailing you when you're in bad shape. If you're gonna take risks like going into hostile wildlife territory with limited health, please bring the flare gun.

  22. I've been challening myself to climb TWM in the shortest possible time on interloper. Some of will probably say it's not worth the effort on loper but for me the 7 flares are essential for surviving surprise wildlife attacks when speedharvesting PV, HRV and TWM before the epic freeze hits the fan. I was happy with climbing the peak in 48 hours on loper, starting in PV. Looting the plane in PV makes it almost too easy nowadays but without a bedroll the peak can still be annoying when the weather won't let you keep your fires burning next to the snow shelter.

What is your record time from spawn til reaching the peak? (And in what difficulty?)
