    My first evening with the new survival update

    Started with Interloper, made my spawn location Brocken Railroad.

    Allowed myself to loot RR, before heading into new region.

    Well, got stomped by the moose, so went into new region with broken ribs. Hanging in there on day 10, but the blizzards in FA are crazy, worse than PV. Food is going to be an issue. Not sure if I’ll be able to craft a bow, so my run might eventually be limited by food.

    LOL, he obviously didn't try himself, or he would have noticed that this doesn't fix anything.

    I have restarted Steam multiple times, deleted the download and re-installed multiple times, and rebooted Windows multiple times. Nada.

    Turned out, one the participants traveled back 1 year later to his spot and his spot still looks like this:

    I have to share it, because it looks sooo good and sooo fitting to TLD

    It would be close to impossible to construct with the current tools, at least in the harder game modes.

    Just imagine: it already takes a very long time to chop up broken limbs. If you had to fell that many trees, with primitive axes, it would take days. Out in the cold. Not sure it's worth it, when you have plenty of caves or indoor locations.

    The bridge at the end of the region is broken and we can't (Currently) get far away traveling the broken railroad, i think some kind of new cave, shortcut or broken tree should let us pass to the other bridge section and then, start traveling to the new region of the far territory.

    That's a possibility.

    However, there are other "blocked" roads / tunnels / tracks right now that could lead to a new connector / map.

    E.g.

    • Mountain Town - tunnel / road with convict bus
    • Mountain Town - road past HRV cave that is blocked at the end
    • Coastal Highway - tunnel with train tracks coming from Mystery Lake

    All of these could be used to connect to a new region.

    TBH, Broken Railroad already sits at the lower left corner of the map, extending it out seems a bit less likely than pushing North from MT or East from CH.

    But honestly, not really a mechanism i would expect inside a game like TLD.

     

    It's an interesting idea, but I think it would not fit.

    Mining is an extremely time and labor intensive activity. If implemented realistically, the calories needed would be prohibitive. If implemented too "cheaply" (e.g. spend one hour mining, and you get decent amounts of metal), it would not be realistic and break immersion.

    It's clear to me what (probably) happened:

    Hinterland's standards, ambitions and creative vision have grown so much the the original timeline and scope for Wintermute could not be kept. And they didn't want to compromise.

    Along the way, the financials didn't pan out - you just can't finance both Survival Mode and Wintermute on charging as little as they did for the base game.

    Therefore, they had to push out paid DLC FIRST in order to ensure financing of Wintermute completion, and finish it the way it fits their creative vision.

    I think HL has struck a good balance. Purchasers of the original game (even if they don't buy the DLC) get so much more than they should have ever expected. Only downside: time!

    All other options (e.g. crappy / cheap / shortened Wintermute ending) would have been worse.

    So yeah, THANK YOU, Hinterland. I think you have done the right thing in the eyes of most fans. You can never make everyone happy.
