  1. That's what I ment by "questionable choices" CF forces us to make @Wasteland Watcher, that's the most bugging part to me too. I don't mind the increased difficulty it provides because that's not a big issue, but the "solutions" to not get CF have not much todo with common sense.
  2. Browsing through the forum I think Cabin Fever is the most hated mechanic in the game for various reasons. Being on the forfront of people who asked for a mechanic to stop endless hibernation in one and the same place I understand why it was implemented, but the way it works it misses it's goal and leads to very questionable choices we have to make. First of all, we can still camp in the same place for ever. All you need to do is plan ahead and have enough wood to stay for 12h outside once you get the CF warning. Yes 12h because caves are usually warm enough during the day to stay in them without a fire. Fisherman who like to spend their days fishing don't have the problem at all, on my last Interloper run which lasted over 100 days I've spend about 50 days on my beloved hut on Jackrabbit's Island and never got feverish. Secondly, who in his clear mind would go outside when he/she is already freezing and near hypothermic? On earlier runs I had Hypothermia and Cabin Fever simultaniously which truly showed how arbitrary this mechanic is. No matter how much I hate seeing the same room every day I would always prefere warming up and healing there instead of going to camp outside when I'm already near death. And lastly, the reason I hate it is, that it punishes playing with a survival mind. On Interloper temperatures are so low that no matter how good your clothing is you will begin freezing within an hour or two on most days. In a "real" situation I would go hunt some game or fish for a few hours, then go back inside and read books or craft cloths. If you play like this in TLD you will get feverish sooner or later. Sure there is an easy fix as I wrote in my first point but every time I get the CF warning I ask myself why, oh why why why... There are better ways to keep you not too comfortable in your room, various systems have been proposed in earlier discussions about endless hibernation and to some extend they are already implemented, at least on Interloper, like scarcity of resources forcing you to take longer and regular hikes around the maps. Or my suggestion, a Vitamine mechanic which forces you to search for specific plants and animals which are only found in certain places to keep you healthy over longer periods of time. Whatever the solution to prevent hibernation might be, Cabin Fever isn't in my book and should be replaced with something that feels less arbitrary. Thoughts?
  3. This is very useful information, thanks for sharing
  4. Never ending solitude, A cry in the wind, All Hope is lost
  5. That's why I almost completely stopped eating wolf and bear but it hurts me everytime to let 30kg of perfect bear meat (I know how to cook :D)) lying on the ground, I hope that the devs will find us some other use for the meat mountains we leave behind. My main diet therefor consists of deer venison and fish, both are plenty enough available and do respawn, you shouldn't run out of them. But it takes more of an effort than it used to be to hunt down a deer because in many places they stand alone without any wolf nearby to chase them into. On the plus side though I got quite good at long distance shooting
  6. More coffee can be found in CH gazstation and of course on the way up to the summit you get all the coffee you need to never sleep again until you get to the lighthouse. Also always check desk- and file cabinet drawers you encounter. Another thing though: I tried to speedrun the challenge again yesterday and after getting to camp office I got lucky and had a blizzard going on outside in the night. Following the tracks I've picked up the Rifle in wolf free Derailment and then went straight to the dam, put my lamp down and waited for fluffy to appear to make my shot. But it didn't come, so I went down the stairs already freaking out in fear of getting jumped around the corner, still no fluffy. I was certain that it must be somewhere but thanks to complete darkness and the need to sleep for 2h I was so freaked out that I stopped the run lol. I always thought that fluffy is a guaranteed spawn, is this not the case or was this due to the blizzard going on? Something clicks in my mind that way way back around v150 I encountered an empty dam once but I am not sure. Anyone else encountered a fluffy free dam?
  7. Man I had to read through this whole wall of text only to find a link that has the most important announcement of all in it: Freakin' Canoes? How awesome please is this? I'm going to tattoo TLD on my back for this Though one must wonder how we're supposed to drive a canoe over frozen rivers or is this a hint to future map updates? Such a small word, so much excitement But all kidding aside it was a great read and proves once more that I made the right choice during winter sale on steam back in 2014 and that I will put many hundred more hours into TLD. I never witnessed the creation of a masterpiece so closely and involved and it's awesome to see what became of TLD already - and that's not even the real game, only sandbox. Don't mind about the release date, if it were about me I'd be happy to see story mode in autumn, for exactly in one week Dark Souls 3 gets released (my other wife besides TLD that I love dearly ;)) and I never liked playing snowy TLD during hot summer days anyway. I prefere spending my spare time during summer outside in my (real life) canoe and not infront of my PC. So by all means, take your time and make us speechless again in September or October
  8. Thanks ChillPlayer Unfortunately in Canada the U.S. link just redirects to the Canadian version of the site which hasn't been updated yet with the episode you mentioned - looking forward to seeing it. try to configure one of the IP addresses in this list as your proxy in your browser (settings->network connections): http://www.us-proxy.org/ This way you will access the site from the USA and should be able to watch the webclips, it's worth it. Curious that I can access them from Switzerland, I'm getting a "sorry, content not for your country" message though on the full clips.
  9. that's sort of already available under the "why they left" video section on history: http://www.history.com/shows/alone/videos They discuss together video by video why they left and what the experience ment for them, but the videos are short, all together might count as a whole show though. I also liked the ending very much, the only thing that felt kinda out of place was when she handed him the envelope with the check inside, you could read on his face that this is the least thing he was thinking about. I kinda too hoped for an ultrasonic of a new baby as he thought. But aside of that, his end speech was very inspiring, I just returned from a canoe trip and I was thinking about some of the stuff he said when we were camping, being free, having a simple life, what humans can achieve and how unimportant the little annoying things of daily life are. I really like his point of view and mindset.
  10. nooooooo why oh why, this makes no sense. [spoil]From what we've seen, Lucas was in the best situation when it comes to his camp, getting food and the utilities he's build himself, last ep he was so highly motivated, going to build this and that and stuff and out of a sudden he breaks down... I still can't believe he tapped out. About Mitch, I'm a bit puzzled why he now remembers that his mom has brain cancer, why then partake in this endevour in the first place, did he think it will be all over in one month? Some tiny voice in my head keeps saying "scripted, scripted", although I truly feel I'm doing these guys unjustice when following that train of thought. So it comes to Alan or Sam... personally I root for Alan too, he was my favorite after Lucas anyway but somehow I've got the feeling that Sam in his youth is more stubborn and will stick it out no matter what, as he already said at the end of ep 9.[/spoil] This will be a long week waiting for the final ep [EDIT]: lol according to this quiz I took I am Mitch: http://www.history.com/shows/alone/pages/alone-personality-quiz Who are you?
  11. My money is more and more on Lucas, heck if you can find the energy and will to build yourself a Yurt and a string instrument after being alone for more than a month in the woods you are in for the win - I really liked his two-notes-song in the last ep And the canoe he's build quite early in the show is still very useful.
  12. I wonder though about the choices some guys made, in particular the one building traps to catch mice. He started building them around day 22 and on day 32 he finally got one. Early in the episode there was an info displayed that a mouse contains 65 cals so he would need to catch 30 of them at least each day to come near 2000 cals. Why did he chose this unrewarding strategy instead of going for more fish? In one of the first episodes he caught quite a mighty samon, why not just continue? The canoe guy has a lot of ducks and goose nearby, why don't he try to catch them with a net, spear or similar? I know from own experience that you can get pretty close to ducks in a canoe, near enough to be in throwing distance at least. Some other things I wonder about the show in general: the first episodes were all about predators - why are they no longer an issue anymore? Since a few eps there was not one mentioning of cougars or bears. In this ep they began showing how all 4 men were desperately struggling to find any food. Then they fast forward 10 days when one was building the fish trap and the other 3 are still in the exact same situation as before - how did they manage to survive without breaking completely down and why is out of a sudden no one able to catch a fish when in the first eps everyone was getting enough fish to survive happily? Still looking forward to the next episodes but I scratched my head alot on this ep.
  13. I doubt that they are allowed to kill big game, after all they are not in a real survival situation and are doing this for fun. Ed Wardle who did the series "Alone in the Wilderness" mentioned several times that he's not allowed by Canadian Law to hunt for big game - if he would've been he would not have almost starved to death, he saw several deers and moose passing by and he even had a rifle. Left aside that it's not as easy as in TLD to hunt with bow and arrow, except of course if you've practiced it. About being fake or not: well there's the 500k reward for the winner which makes a strong case for being true. Unlike Ultimate Survival Alaska where all the winner gets is a knife IIRC (not saying it's completely fake but probably heavy edited). The guy who lost his firestriker and then tapped out probably was just looking for an excuse to get out, from all I've seen so far the 4 remaining guys should be able to survive for a long time, especially the canoe building guy
  14. Yeah I just saw it - lucky guy gets 10lb of fish but it seems the cougars are opting now for a free meal too. I thought about sleeping high on a tree too but in one of the first episodes you see a whole bear family up on the trees and cougars can climb them also, not sure I could make a bed in the trees that I can reach but the predators don't. How about smoked fish, would that attract predators as well? It keeps insects away from the meat so I'm thinking the predators might lose interest in it too. [EDIT]: btw, ep 5 is already out
  15. Okay as I kinda expected already when reading this thread, me = hooked I made the mistake of watching the first episode near 1am and then couldn't go to bed without watching 2 more episodes until 3am on a work week. Aaanyway... Hands down I would be scared to the core in this situation, bears sniffing out my makeshift tent, wolfs houling and fighting 20m behind my back, the continuous thread of being jumped by a cougar.... Thanks to TLD I already feel my Amygdala at work when I only hear a dog barking lol. It raises a question I couldn't figure out: what would be the ideal way to deal with such a situation where you need to camp in a place full of wild and supposedly dangerous animals? Is there anything you can do besides building a huge fire and pray to your gods? There are some survival experts here in the forum, what do your trainers teach you regarding this? I think in this particual setting on Vancouver Island the lucky ones are those who got dropped off by the shore. I would keep the shore in my back, build a huge fire in front of me and camp between fire and shore. If not near the shore, for the first 3-4 days I'll probably turn religous again  After finding water and something to eat I would then focus on building some kind of a fence (they have an axe and saw), big enough to keep my camp and a decent fire inside. But those are just fantasies made up while sitting comfortable on a couch watching a TV show. In reality, how are you supposed to deal with this, is there a "right" way?
  16. Once again you point us to a new amazing survival show, thanks Bill. I wonder where this one will lead me, after watching Ultimate Survival Alaska (thanks to you) and playing TLD way too intensively, I began fishing and bought a Canadian Canoe
