Mistawondabread Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 Well I've recently started to play the long dark (only 30 hours so far), and I'm wondering why we can't render bear fat into a fuel source. It could be a harvestable item, and you could render it out on a stove/fire. You could use it for accelerator or in lamps, or to extend the life of a torch. It's also really good to fry potatoes in;-) You could also use to for the bow string, which would help decrease it's decay rate.
kaynesyduin Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 make cloth into a wick and make candles, a low light renewable light source.
Patrick Carlson Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 You could also use to for the bow string, which would help decrease it's decay rate.Interesting. So bear fat is a kind of preservative then?
Aduron Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 Interesting. So bear fat is a kind of preservative then?Looking at this forum post (from a google search), there are a ton of uses for bear fat:http://www.survivalistboards.com/showthread.php?t=204301I think number 1 on this guy's list is what Mistawondabread is referring to:"to condition and waterproof and treat leathers"If it could do that, it can probably condition cured gut.I would love for animal fat to make it into the game, it's one of those shockingly useful things in nature.edit: oh, and kaynesyduin mentioned candles, and I +1 that every time it comes up.
kamajutsu Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 +1 for the bear fat idea, and also making candles or any other alternative light sources.
Gaboris Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 +1 Didn't think too much about harvesting fat as of yet, but seeing that survival usage list I'd be interested to use some bear oil to maintain my rifle or to light one of those dish candles.
DrMembrane Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 +1 on fat candles, fits both mechanically and thematically
AmericanSteel Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 +1 for tallow candles. +0 for a conditioner. No real experience in that wheelhouse.-1 for using fat as a lubricant for a firearm. In cold climates you want less lubricants on a weapon, not more. That is something that is just going to attract grime and freeze up. Just no.
