Loppysaurusrex
We need some of these!Allows for faster movement through snow, make it out of some line, reclaimed wood, and fir wood.
toebar
these wouldnt be out of place to scavenge from cabins either.. One thing to consider though-- we already have pretty quick movement in snow conditions. If snowshoes were introduced, that might mean a decrease in movement speed through snow without them. StringEpsilon
@toebar: I would just disallow running with them. You are as fast as on road everywhere, but you can't run. And while on road, they wear of twice as fast.

smohyee
Or, perhaps snowshoes could reduce fatigue rather than affect speed? Maybe only a mild increase in speed in heavy snow, but a significant reduction to fatigue from running.
StringEpsilon
You can run in snow shoes though.True, but it's a nice counterbalance / trade-off... It's hard to find a balance between good game design and realism in this kind of game (see the whole wolf-discussion). I think slower or no running with snow shoes is not that hard to digest with a big bagpack and thick clothing on - even if it's still not realistic. But, that suggestion was just for balancing, so that the shoes don't become an overpowered must-have item. toebar
You can run with *some* snowshoes on--typically smaller modern shoes that aren't meant to work in deep snow.. I doubt that with a backpack and traditional wood frame snowshoes that running would be a viable option. For this reason I like StringEpsilon's approach. It' strikes a good balance between reality and gameplay.

Amateur Bushcrafter
You read the title. Considering that this is Canada and that all the maps are winter, it would only be natural that exploration that often leads to top of the maps such as mountains; Should have deep snow that made you walk harder and slower and make you spend a looot more calories. This is why manufacturing Snowshoes from the same kind of lumber we use to make traps; Would come in handy! Wouldn't that be a striking addition to the game, i ask?
toebar
Even better, I think, would be to craft snowshoes using traditional materials...... (long time to make, movement bonus, condition degrades normally)http://www.snowshoemag.com/2004/10/18/a-look-back-an-overview-of-traditional-snowshoe-design-in-canada/..... or duct tape lol (short time to make, small movement bonus, condition degrades quickly)http://www.instructables.com/id/Gorilla-TapeGorilla-Glue-Snowshoes-from-Scratch/
