mystifeid
Astonishing geomagnetic spike hit the ancient kingdom of Judah At least now I know what to put in the underground bunker. Matches. Lots and lots of matches.
Timber Wolf
Interesting article. Thanks for sharing @mystifeid! I especially like how it ends - "We often think of the post-industrial age as one where humans control nature. But in some ways, advanced technology has made humanity more vulnerable to the vicissitudes of our planet than our ancestors were."
cekivi
The sun is also a potential problem. When it burbs out charged particles it can short out satellites and, if there are enough, create a global EMP-like effect.
Mel Guille
A great read, @mystifeid, thanks for sharing! It's a little morbid, but I've often found the science behind potential large-scale disasters to be fascinating...

Mel Guille
Well, part of it is that I just like science, period. But I will also admit to a fascination with apocalypse scenarios. For me, I think there's some appeal to the idea that the modern world with its often overwhelming complexity many terrible problems and could be wiped away and humanity could start over. Of course, this is very much an escapist fantasy -- in real life such an event would be a nightmare with staggering losses and most people, including myself, would be lucky to live even a few years past it. But there's a sort of delightful optimism to thought that we could build a new, and perhaps better world out of the rubble of the old one.
