Actually, it seems like a great theory to use if the wolves chase my survivor up a tree and start preparing bbqer at the bottom.

it's just a dream... juuuust a dream *fingers crossed*

no cancel fingers crossed, fingers frozen 🥶

  2. By the way, if I'm reading the posts correctly, there are two Deadman codes. The older one actually doesn't have all worst settings. I believe this is a new one to input.

I recently did a Deadman minus Low Sleep recovery Forlorn Muskeg only challenge.

Wow! I'm impressed! I'm struggling so much with Deadman plus all maps and all allowed just to barely get by. Can't picture it on a single map.

But, rather than a singular map how about Deadman PLUS Cinderella challenge! Now that would be EVIL! :D

Also, I'm aboard with everyone. I'd love to watch moar Deadman series with someone giving this mode a run of its snowdrifts. :coffee:

How can a research doctor know about an incoming, world-ending solar flare? The reason why she acts so mysterious was answered in Episode 3. She had to sneak past lab security to get the medical cure out of the lab.

They have the weather screw up research facility next door?

She could have overheard something wasn't meant for her ears, which is a lot more of an exciting theory then dull old we have screwed up the nature moralizing. It sounds to me more like some kind of big bad accident happened that contributed rather than it just happened just because it slowly did; an experiment going haywire.

  4. I think this might be related. Are we suppose to find anything in a cave behind the waterfall?

I got a pointer that there might be something relevant there, but the cave doesn't have anything in it. So, unless someone has been leaving notes on lumps of coal that quest progression isn't going anywhere. I looked around the waterfall for any other cave and there is nothing. The green backpack on the ground is empty.

I was attacked within a minute of leaving the shack.

I went down the river and climbed the left bank to where that small house is (the wolves will attack you as you go up the bank). I stayed one full night in that house and Gwen healed 100% while I slept there. This made it easier the next day to fight wolves as they will attack again once you leave that small house, but Gwen can take hits from them being fully healed. You can put Gwen in front of you and take shots at wolves when they stop to bite her and then use bandages to stop her bleeding once they run off. Then I left the small cabin and followed leftward along the cliffs all the way to the bridge where a straight road to town starts. Didn't go through Molly's.

I'm also finding these wolves a pain because fire doesn't seem to work on them.

I found Gwen's encounter the hardest to beat. That's where I died the most.

Not only is there a map now, you also have an arrow that shows exactly where you are and where to go.

It would be an utter nightmare not having these quest spots marked on the map. I most assuredly wouldn't have any patience to blindly keep stumbling around in story mode with zero indicators. Story mode is entirely different from the sandbox mode because in sandbox you go wherever you want and in the story you need a fixated place and until you find it you'll just be frustrated having not even a general direction where to go. In sandbox I don't want a map. In story mode I most assuredly do and I want a big fat cross drawn on the map that shows where I should go.

Most importantly, what does all this has to do with your story, the main story?

In that case it wasn't necessary to even go for that airplane because it's none of your business, not just to a point where you need to save 3 others, no need for Gwen either.

We find out that Astrid is a doctor, but a research doctor

That's sort of funny because Molly even comments on that as 'meh not the useful kind.' 😂

  8. I guess I'll try the fire again and watch more carefully if its presence lowers morale. However, it does not have the same effect for sure as in the game where a wolf yelps and simply runs from a fire. These ones just cross it and bite you anyway, though, maybe that costs them morale.

Providing the fire does help, then I suppose the strategy would be to drop the survivor, then light a blue flare and build a fire to hold off the wolves and then start shooting at them. I suppose with a cliff at your back and a fire in front it would make it harder for these wolves.

That being said, as crazy as it sounds, I'm glad these aren't like the regular game wolves. These really are menacing and a far bigger threat. This fits very well with the episode where the wolves are advertised as a force to be reckoned with, and they are. I hope they won't be added to any normal games or it would be a huge problem though.

Here's the thing though. Nobody KNOWS what's going on. And nobody knows about the impending apocalypse.

The way Astrid is all mysterious makes me think she knows something about the Apocalypse and perhaps she found out through her laboratory so somebody else knows something. That suitcase certainly doesn't have a cure for sneezing otherwise it wouldn't be so secret.

Has I said in the original post. The blue flairs. The only draw back is that they burn super fast and can’t be used when carrying. But they will hold wolves off till you can start a fire.

Oh I see. I guess I had thrown the blue ones and didn't know their burn rate.

Um.... these wolves aren't scared of fires at all. I had hidden in a river cave and built a fire inside a cave. A pack of 3 jumped inside the cave and stomped all over the fire like it doesn't burn in order to bite a chunk out of Astrid.

This is something I found weird. The fire doesn't scare them. Though, perhaps it lowers their morale a little without making them yelp and run like regular wolves? I'm not sure at this point hence I've been shooting at them when they barged in.

  11. 46 minutes ago, RegentRelic said:

Don’t use them to fight the wolves us them to keep them at bay. If you have enough flairs you can make it across the whole map.

I'm not sure which is a good way to use them. One of them actually jumped on top of me while I was holding a red flare and I had to do that thingy where you click super fast to get him off and they do bite your leg even if you are holding one. And when I threw them it lowered morale next to nothing or perhaps my aim is that terrible, which it is, but I did find it easier to shoot the wolves.

I suppose you mean if you aren't carrying anyone (since you can't hold a flare with a guy on your back) then you can hold the flare and run which makes it easier. I do prefer to hoove it if nobody is on my back (wolves aside :D). Do it with a flare seems more fun.

We have to carry people back? My goodness. I'm glad I am doing the side quests ahead of time!

Oh doh! I'm sorry for the spoilers! 😱

  12. I haven't completed the episode yet, but I found both negative and positive things about it.

Story: I wish we've been given more solid hints as to what's going on. It really is a notch too vague. However, The Long Dark is very good at creating this mysterious atmosphere. So, this vagueness is forgiven to some extent. The atmosphere is the most powerful and my fav factor in this game. I believe it has been preserved. I still very much enjoy the setting! :)

Quests: I'm good with the classical go-see and fetch quests. I really liked Grey Mother quest where we needed to get her food and supplies. I'm fine with Astrid doing a similar quest for other people. It makes me feel useful and gives a sense of beating an encroaching danger. Blizzards are good if you have enough fuel and food and feel cozy inside. Though, PV IS big and there is a bit too much walking involved for my linking back to the approximate area where you've already been. It's like oh shoot I found a piece of paper at church for a quest and it told me to go back to this far crash spot where I've already been twice.

Now, here is the absolute terror of a quest line: while carrying Gwen was painful, it was a driven quest. I appreciated its purpose, though, I died the most at this stage. But, finding three more survivors and doing exactly the same thing was just beyond bad. I seriously hoped that I'd just find corpses so I won't have to bother dragging anyone. Speaking of dragging. It is SLOW. slow slow sloooooooooow! And PV is BIG, big big big! And it's just boring and slow and I felt like kicking Astrid in the rear to make her walk faster. It makes zero sense that all three have managed to get away from the crash site, built fire, found a secure spot and then passed out and planned to die. Couldn't they have been scripted to at least be able to walk at a regular pace beside her or leaning onto her shoulder. I'm not asking for sprint, but just move faster, this is like pulling teeth. Having one quest where you carried Gwen, was tough and ENOUGH. Deal with the others easier so you don't have to drag them. I don't even care if Astrid finds them, wakes them and they vanish into thin air, after she treats injuries and explains a path to safety, and they auto reappear in the Hall as supposedly saved. Like uhoh the wolves are attacking right after I explained everything! Run for your life while I hold them off! Even this is better then dragging them three more times.

That being said, I've always known that Astrid is awesome and I'm so excited that she's a grand match for Will! :D

One other thing I really liked. I found myself struggling with the natural elements in PV. Especially when carrying survivors, I had to stop to warm up. I played on hardened survivor and with the first 2 episodes I found the resources still too easy to obtain and the weather not biting enough. This has been addressed with ep3. It's not too hard, but harder than then first two episodes and I liked that. I did come close to almost kicking the bucket due to nature. When I found one of the guys, it  was getting dark and I was closer to Molly's. On the way, right after a pack had beaten me up pretty badly, a blizzard suddenly started to boot as soon as the wolves ran off. My health dropped into red when I dragged my feet to the door only to find out that blasted woman had locked it. Luckily the basement was still available, but I did nearby kick the bucket right there freezing my hide off.

  13. These Timberwolves are kicking my rear no doubt. I had to redo the fights multiple times with every carried survivor.

What I found useful: I tried carrying survivors along the cliffs. If you put your back to the cliff or back in to a niche, the wolves will have limited flanking. That way you only need to aim into two or three side areas. Also, if you can climb a rock or a tree, it limits their approach line.

Also, I dropped survivor in front of me as bait; as wicked as that sounds. The wolves do stop when they take a bite out of your ward, this gives you a moment when they aren't in motion to aim and shoot them properly.

This is how I've actually been able to fight off an attack when carrying Gwen and 4 attacked. I died a million times and then went leftward along the cliffs. When I heard the music I dropped Gwen into snow in front and put my back to the cliffs. I had failed with the pistol, so, I tried the rifle. They massively went after Gwen. I killed one and badly hurt another. Once they ran I used two bandages to stop her bleeding. Her health dropped to 27% but I finally managed to get those wolves off my back. They actually hadn't come back at me, which was lucky since in other scenarios I had fought them off but then a smaller pack would go after me again.

    Item usefulness:

Red flare: next to useless, lowers morale too little.

Blue flare: a little better, but not too useful.

Rifle: The most powerful and scares the shit out of these wolves, especially if you wound them. BUT, they're just too fast and jump on you in close quarters, so, aiming it is hard.

Once, I got lucky when a pack of 4 charged. I managed to 1 shot one of them, this dropped their morale to something like 30% from 100%

Pistol: I found it the easiest to use and less weight. Easier to aim than the rifle in closer quarters. The wolves get scared and lose morale even if you miss. A pistol can also kill them. I had a couple bleed out and die after getting wounded.

  14. 🤔 It seems my computer isn't capable of pulling too many fps due to the lack of a decent gaming card. I've been making earlier video attempts, which have resulted in poor quality and lag for me in game, thus, I did say I'm not likely to make videos, but the idea is still buzzing around my head. There is just something about sharing The Long Dark. :x I have gone from full screen to a window mode much smaller than my screen, which has given me a bit more speed and just a tiiiny bit better picture. Thus, a new recording.

This is another shot at Cinderella challenge. Survive 20 days on each map and bring only 1 can and 1 choice item to each new map. Furthermore, after trying all possible modes, including deadman (which probably has MORE wolves) I've finally gotten to my scariest level, the Stalker.  I found that I don't actually enjoy doing Cinderella on Loper, whereas, Voyager is too easy. Thus, here I go finally ready to risk being stalked.

There is no mike recording, whoops that. Then again, there is a good phrase to live by: If I woman is not speaking, don't interrupt!

    Wish me luck! :D

  15. Hi guys,

In spite of its severity, I have been giving deadman an occasional shot. The games were rather short to turn into a saga, however, I have been able to compile some very nice screenshots and I do get the chills just looking at them hence I know these are the ones made during the tuffest of the tuff surviving moments. I'm rather proud of them. 😊
