  1. It would be interesting to see the survey results if hinterland were to post them. Keeping in mind of course the people who got the game, played it for 5mins and got too frustrated and never looked at it again are far less likely to have taken it.

  2. One potential is to continue to make some game conditions more and more difficult over time instead of stopping at a certain point. For example if animal spawns were cut to 60% of their previous value every 15 days or whatever. So at 1, then 0.6, .36, .216, etc. Eventually you would starve to death from lack of food, but that offers a goal of getting as far as you can that can never be reached as you could never live forever.

Same thing could be done with temps, though the magic houses kinda make it not work very well.

  3. I agree with number two, but not three or four. I find cairns to be useless for how I play. For number three I say, especially at the start, use tools all the time. The first little bit of a run is the most dangerous and getting all the help you can will increase your chances of survival. Heck, last game I used a stim just on a road to get out of a blizzard more quickly. Later on in the game when I am geared up I won't need the stim so much so it won't matter, but it sure helped on day one or two.

Of course, everything I said is subject to personal play style and objectives.

Speaking of my eye problems, thank you for the link, @osizzido. But i game on an xbox with a 40" tv. I do have a lap top, but can't use it much because a 15" screen is just too small.

Oh okay. I know a number of monitors can be used on an xbox but you may need to find an audio solution. Maybe there is another reviewer that looks at TVs and measures the minimum brightness. I am not sure.

With all the waterfalls in the game, you’d think you could bottle some of it up as nonpotable and purify it with tabs or boiling it.

That might make those tabs useful

  6. Hello. First of all I wish to share a channel which does excellent monitor reviews. In particular they test minimum brightness which may make a big difference to your eyes.

Now to answer your other questions, yes caches still exist, but not on the lowest loot settings/interloper.
Sticks take forever to break down because hinterland doesn't seem to care about getting anywhere close to reality.
As far as I know there are no plans at all to implement a sled

    3. More wildlife: Boy, this one would certainly improve the gameplay. Carnivorous as well as herbivorous animals would be nice. Hunting and using their pelts for more useful items would be genuinely interesting. Wouldn't mind seeing newer types of vegetation even some specific to certain areas. Also wouldn't mind the harvestable vegetation regrowing their 'harvestables' (blasphemous, I know).

Certain veggies could potentially be grown indoors. If they implemented a house heating/insulation mechanic then we could grow a few veggies by the windows if we managed to keep the temperature up inside.

Ummm... you folks do know that TLD does not use the DRM features in Steam, right? I am able to run the game without Steam by invoking it from the command line, without any steam libraries loaded or anything like that, right? I'm not sure why they would change that policy for their DLC...?

Nope I had no idea. I always assume steam games use DRM. If they give me a steam key I would possibly consider DLC.

  9. 8 hours ago, Hawk said:

I appreciate you bringing that up. :)

However, since Hinterland pulled TLD from GoG, it doesn't seem likely that Hinterland would go against their decision and sell DLC through them.

That's a good point. I likely wouldn't even consider DLC if it wasn't released DRM free. I do wish to mention that, AFAIK, hinterland could just give all GoG users a steam key for the game if they wanted to. That would likely win over some people. I suspect that a lot of people on GoG use GoG because they don't like epic/steam for one reason or another and simply wouldn't be interested in paying for stuff on steam anyways. But I am sure some would at least.

  10. That's actually a pretty cool idea. I like it. Nice thing is is that the NPC doesn't even need to do anything just lay there and the challenge completes as you get to them. Nice.

As far as I'm concerned Improved Sprains was implemented already...in the form of the ability to disable them entirely in Custom games.

Indeed. Removal of sprains entirely improves my enjoyment of the game.

People might see roadmaps as a list of lies because of AAA games like anthem. A half made game sold on roadmap promises that were never going to happen. I am sure quite a few people are bitter after being burned by games like that.

As to this roadmap post it's neat to see. I didn't know there was one before and it's cool to see a kinda time machine idea list. Obviously not everything you think of will work and it's neat to see what made it into the game.

  12. Forlorn Muskeg for me because it's the zone I have the least fun in. I simply don't enjoy the weak ice mechanic as it exists. I think initially I tried to run over it and I was really close to making it to the other side but fell through. I ended up back at the place I started even though it was much further away. So my character swam all the way back instead of going 30cm forward to the spot I actually wanted to be? I think it's the feeling of things not making sense, gameplay wise, that generally bothers me in TLD and Forlorn Muskeg just amplifies it.

I can understand why it is made like that. It's simple and safe to note the location people get on the weak ice and then put them back there if they fall through, but it does come at a cost.

I was initially meh about Survival mode... but give it a try. The open world freedom to make your own story, is a full game itself. While you wait for the complete story.

I fully intend to play the story mode. It's the main thing I want from the game. However I am old and patient. I enjoy story games the most when I can sit down and play the entire thing so that is what I am waiting for.

As to survival, I've tried it out. I find it's not challenging enough in the ways I like to be challenged to keep me interested. To me the long dark is at its best when you're fighting against the environment. I am not interested in the wolf thunderdome, I have STALKER: Anomaly which is vastly superior for fighting animals.

I'm now at pennies per hour played but there was no "I've received so much value I feel almost embarrassed for buying it on sale" option. 🤣

I am glad you're enjoying it. I hope I will too once the story is done, patched up, and will give me the best experience possible. I will dedicate a weekend to plowing through it in one go when it's time.

    6. How would you rate the value you feel you have received from The Long Dark, based on your enjoyment of it and the price you paid?

I had to answer "I don't feel I have received good value. " because there was no answer that said "I don't know yet since the story mode isn't complete". That would be a better answer, but I guess as of yet I don't feel I have received good value since I haven't even played the story mode. Once that is done I will be able to answer the question.

    * 7. The Long Dark is currently priced at $29.99 USD (and scaled according to the power of local currency, so in some countries it is much less expensive). How do you feel about this price point?

On steam this is far, far, far too expensive for me. On GoG or some other DRM free service it's fine and I think(?) I did pay full price for it. However, since it's only on steam and maybe epic now my answer is "I would not pay full price for it. "

    * 16. If Hinterland continued to update The Long Dark after Episode Five ships, how would you prefer to support this ongoing development (understanding that it would not be done for free)?

This was hard to answer too. It's not that I wouldn't be interested in content that you COULD make, it's that I don't think you guys WOULD produce content I care about. Chances are I will not be spending any additional money on TLD. I would be much more likely to buy any new games you make. Of course, see #7 for how that will go.

  16. I am at work so I can't look, but I know I am better with the rifle. At least at long range since arrow drop is pretty high. Actually on my last game I actually practiced long range with the bow a little to try to see if I could aim better. I don't think I played for very long though. Anyways if I remember I can take a look.

Yes you can improvise and adjust, but darkness inside is totally overdone. At night I can understand, but when you need a lantern inside, during daylight when there are plenty of windows, that's pretty bad.

Yup. At night in a blizzard sure, make it completely dark....but when it's light out and I can't see anything at all right by a window?....yeah, that is awful.

    edit--------

What I would like is just some consistency. If it's bright out and there are windows in the house don't make it pitch black.

  18. I would love to see higher/lower amounts for custom games. I've often said slider bars would work well. For example with rabbit population you could have a bar from 0-100 or 300 or whatever. 50% would be the normal medium setting, low could be 30%, and 1% would mean there are 50 times fewer rabbits than on medium. That would make them a very rare sight indeed, which sounds good. 300% would be three times more animals than on the highest current possible setting.

I think there is an argument for entering in numbers too. Like a minimum temperature. You could set it to -100 or whatever if you wanted.
