Ah right, and my actual thoughts about this.... make starting a fire always a 100%, but scale the time it takes with the materials you use. Starting a fire with a match and lump of fir? Okay, that'll take you a solid two hours of caring for that fire like new born. Got a book, some accelerant and a bunch of cat tails? Well that's a fire hazard even without throwing in a flare to light it. The idea here is: reduce frustration (ever failed with 85% TEN TIMES in a row? I have.), remove the "need" to always proxy your fire with a torch, since, honestly, that's just a cumbersome way to eventually guarantee a 100% chance anyways, and also give tinder (and highly flammable fuel such as book, as well as accelerant) an actual use.

I would love for fire to have a 100% chance but the time it takes changes. It would reduce the amount of clicking by a LOT which this game desperately needs. This is exactly why I think a fire bow would work well. Start the fire with the fire bow...maybe it takes 30mins, maybe it takes 3 hours, but it's one click and you just let it happen and then cancel it at any time if you want. You could even have animations in there to show progress if you wanted.

Anyways what I really wanted to comment on is that I think the fire % chance of success is not working correctly. The probability of failing an 85% task ten times in a row is staggeringly low, like 5.8x10^-9 chance. I remember when I was first playing the game I would often calculate the chances that I would have failed 5,6, or 7 times in a row(which was common) and it was always like 0.5% chance, 2% chance, 0.001% chance. It's like the random number generated gets stuck sometimes.

I'd really be interested in higher resolution textures. This doesn't have to be some super high-res 4K texture pack that updates literally everything. But even by current standards some of the textures are pretty poor. Like wall or furniture textures when you stand directly next to them. I think some things can be improved without sacrificing the watercolor graphics style there.

Another really bad texture I noticed is the shadows. It's especially noticeable with power line shadows. I played around with ReShade and forced Anti-Aliasing. It's a great improvement, but I eventually concluded that the low resolution shadow texture is probably the main problem.

The other thing is draw distance. This will always be an issue in large open maps, but even at pretty close distances there is tons of object pop-in with things like grass, carcasses, camp fires and items on the ground.

Lighting would be my number one thing. Having a fire going and lighting up the little area in front of the stove but having everything else out of that little spot be pitch black is not something I like and it's extremely noticeable in a not great way.

  3. Cool this all sounds good :) I am glad you are all getting a couple weeks off. In an industry of abuse and crunch and murder this pleases me.

I am pretty happy about you guys splitting off the story and survival mode too. There are a lot of games that constantly break as they're updated and if you can make the story mode and patch it all up to a good state and it stays that way that will be great.

Also I am looking forward to the mod support. If I can easily modify spawn rates and meat amounts that would be nice.....I will hope for but not expect to be able to mod animal spawn and existence areas as well as animal track duration so the game will be less predictable and maybe have some tracking/hunting in it. Personally that would really improve my experience with the game. House heating is great too, but there is a mod for that already. Anyways I really do look forward to mods.

But yeah anyways nice work with everything so far. I am glad I decided to purchase this game before it was finished to support development.

  4. I had this happen to me too in a past patch. Not with bears but with wolves. I don't trust anything in this game, I assume it will teleport, sink into the ground, etc etc. Hopefully all these bugs can be patched up after the game is out of early access.

  5. Yeah I think all the weights in this game could do with a look at so they make sense. This is why players will walk around with uncrafted old man's beard.

I would like fires to get a look at too. One big thing I would like to see with fire starting is lowering the number of clicks.

  6. I hope you've tried out STALKER: Anomaly, strelok. Anyways for clothing repair I personally repair them when it's the most beneficial thing to do. Repairing a little before bed, or repairing if I need the extra warmth. I don't have a set % that I like to do it at.

I have never broken down any weapons or tools. It has never come up that it would benefit me to do so so I don't spend the time/calories doing it.

The other questions have been answered or aren't something I can really answer.

  7. Yeah I was going to say FSR might make more sense. Easier to add in and it actually works with everything. Intel has an open DLSS style upscaler coming as well which could be interesting. Either way I think people with integrated GPUs would love to have FSR as an option.

  8. Interesting. The cave has a single loop in there so it would be very difficult to actually get lost, though you may feel like you will be. I wonder if it was intentional to give the player the feeling of not knowing where they are going without really exposing them to any risk? If you do any other maps like this it may answer that question.

    What is DRM ?

    @peteloud, are you on Steam?

    Yes.

DRM is what dictates when where and how you play a game. A Lamp is quite correct in saying it's aggressive. It routinely stops people who purchased software from actually using it. Personally I think companies like adobe should have to offer full refunds of software where they turn off their DRM servers but here in north america we lick the dog poo off the boots of big corporations and beg to be kicked.

  10. Custom currently. I reduce food/water requirements to the minimum, reduce animals to minimum, reduce health regen to minimum(while still having it exist), and typically reduce loot to minimum. I disable things I find annoying and uninteresting like sprains and cabin fever. That being said I cannot reduce animal spawn rate to as low as I would like so I have not been playing the game as it offers no challenge at settings I find enjoyable.

The setting I will enjoy the most is story mode but I won't be playing that until it's all finished and patched up so I can get the best experience possible. I want to play through the game at my own pace and enjoy it at its best. I am perfectly happy to wait for at long as that takes.

You raise an interesting point about gaming in this digital age.   Not having to be dependent on the internet for game play makes a lot of sense.  Especially if you reside in an area where accessing the web may be problematic.  The only thing that I can say in support of Steam or entities like them, is that at least they are a digital repository for my 200+ collection of video games.  It does allow me to manage what titles inhabit the limited space on my SDD...

I buy almost all of my games on GoG. Mostly DRM free and it has my library of games just like steam but I can play them anytime.

The one thing valve is doing though is promoting linux. I plan on switching to linux soon so I may end up supporting valve/steam a little more because that has value to me.

  12. I tried The Forest for like 30mins....I just didn't like it at all.

I hope hinterland does well. It seems that the company considers their employees to be human beings instead of meat to be pushed through a grinder. At least on the outside.

Either way I doubt I will be getting their next game. I don't like games with DRM so yeah.

  13. I never use the map. It took a lot of time and had no real payoff other than it being a task that exists that you can complete?

Maybe more map things to find like the already existing photographs would help? A road map could reveal all the roads in the game, maybe the firewatch(?) tower could have a map of the area around it pinned to the wall.

  14. No game provides entertainment forever. Once I learned the basics of this game I found it's very quick to get yourself set up and have nothing left to do but just live another day which isn't fun for me. Unless the survival game gets a significant update I am likely going to ignore it and just play through the story mode and call this one good. But that's okay because I purchased this game early to help fund the story mode which is really what I want. I am really looking forward to playing it once it's good to go. TLD has excellent atmosphere which I think works particularly well with story games.

  15. This could be for a future title.

That said even if they put in a poorly made coop for TLD it's still going to be fun. I can't think of a single game that has been made worse by having coop in it, not even deadspace with magical teleporting mule isacc who warps all over the place, disappears for the cutscenes, and was just stuffed in there without a thought. The laziest hack jobs, as long as they work on a technical level, are good.
