Bill Tarling
While it's easy to get as many torches as you want now (pulled from a fire made from massively available sticks collected), it shouldn't have the same value as a crafted torch.Pulling a "torch" out of the fire is actually just a burning piece of wood [which is only one of the components needed to craft a torch] - no cloth or accelerant, or anything else... just a single piece of wood (no even necessarily "reclaimed wood") and as such should not keep its status as a "torch" when the flame is put out and the remnants put back into inventory. The reason a crafted torch has a full chance to light is because it was designed and crafted to light easily. Lighting just a partially burned piece of wood should be even harder than lighting a fresh piece of wood (piece that you're carrying, without tinder or accelerant, and that we can't light with just a match by itself), yet our burned stick from a fire has the same quality and durability for reuse as a torch. At most, the burning sticks (fire derived torches) should only have the value of perhaps a stick. You also shouldn't be able to harvest it (or at most harvest as a single tinder plug).By giving a fire created torch the same value as a crafted torch, it makes the crafted torch not only redundant, but also a wasted cost of supplies, time, and calories to make. It also minimizes the value of flares (apart from flares not needing matches to light) since you can simply hoard a stack of burned stick torches, and light them one after the other (from the previous one) to carry around -- then, when supplies run low, use one to make a new campfire to create more.Personally, even though there might be a bit of wood left from a campfire/stove torch, I would be satisfied if they were simply single use. If it gets put out or used up, it's like the burned out flare -- no value or simply remove it from supplies. That would give back the difference and value between a campfire torch vs. a crafted torch in the game. RustyNumbat
The ability to get a smoldering stick from the fire, to light other fires within a minute or two, would be very welcome. But let's face it, the only reason we need this is so we can get fire from magnifying glass to indoors, so I think simply being able to use the magnifying glass indoors (when the weather is right) would fix this. After all, how hard would it be for the player to start the tinder smoldering outside then dash inside to start the fire?
nicko
+1. I agree if taking a torch from a fire, (or should we say a stick on fire) when it goes out it should return as a semi burn't/consumed stick. not a torch! and they shouldn't be able to burn for such a long time! Snoman
I'm a little late to this discussion but what if rather then pulling a torch from a fire we remove embers. with a burn time of 5-10 min , and if your feeling abit evil say 10% chance of burning hands
whisperwind777
Taking a torch from a roaring fire is magic. Torches should only be crafted. Harvesting clothing should generate more cloth, and leather/dried animal skins can also be used to make torch. Harvesting meat/guts could yield animal fat as a substitute of oil to make torch.
