Decappa
After playing the game a lot after the first beta launch i have just started getting back into it. It really is a great game and having a lot of fun but there is one thing that is really annoying and gets on my nerves and that is the constant howling from wolves. It really breaks the immersion because real wolves do not howl every few seconds for hours upon hours. I’ve read that this is how it’s supposed to be and before it was thought to be too infrequent but honestly it feels like it should be the opposite. Like i said real wolves don’t howl nearly this often to the point where this just feels like a sound bug. Im guessing they activate it by proximity or something and maybe I’m just in an area where there are wolves absolutely everywhere (im playing story in Milton at the mo). Still super annoying though. Anyone else think it’s a little excessive?
ManicManiac
No, I don't think it's excessive. The wolves roam & howl on a pseudorandom basis, and audio cues are pretty vital in this game. For you're specific complaint, the Milton Township does have a lot of "wolf packs" surrounding/inside of it. This does increase the chances of those random howling events to overlap or end up back-to-back... but honestly I don't think it's really a problem. I think that if there are a lot of wolves in an area, it would be reasonable to expect hear them more frequently (specifically in the context of this game). I get that some folks may find it a bit irritating... I mean some folks also think the waterfalls are irritating (but sometimes that's just how life is ) Edited October 4, 2020 by ManicManiac

I also killed a few and that lessened the howling. Guess it was just jarring suddenly having the increase from the last time i played (it was quite a while ago) but it’s not like there’s howling when there’s no wolves around so all good.🤘
panda_gamer87
I thought the wolf howls acted as a proximity detector. Usually, if the wolf is near by and detects you, they either howl or growl ( if you have raw meat on you). They may not be visible, but this gives you an opportunity to either try to run for a building or abandoned car until they pass by (or prepare to fight). I've never encountered excessive wolf howling. However, there are times when you can see wolves in the distance looking for food and they'll start howling (not because they detect you). I'm not sure what purpose that serves (maybe wolf to wolf communication).
