    Noise.

    Specially UNIDENTIFIED noise.

    A wolf howl?
WOLVES! Where? Here? There? I have a gun? I have decoy? Flares?

    Bear
Can I go around? If he attacks, do I have first aid to survive?

    Moose
Can I go... Yes, I can go around.
Never have been attacked by a moose that I was not trying to hunt. They're easy to go around, so far.

But then, I go into the damn, walk a few meters, and hear a loud-metal-like-bang.

I KNOW it's nothing. I KNOW that fluffy isn't there anymore. I KNOW there are no NPCs, no unseen threats, no nothing.
But DAMN that shit makes me crap my pants more than anything.
Other noise in other areas also apply hahaha

Speaking of noises, the sound effect that plays when you get a badge makes me piss my pants each and every time. Holly molly, I tell you that creepy chime half way between a mourning wraith and Händel’s hallelujah comes from the depths of the nine circles of hell. And when it happens during 4DON you better have your defibrillator close!

    Cheat:
1.: act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage, especially in a game or examination.
2.: avoid (something undesirable) by luck or skill.

What is the advantage that one gains when the badge is achieved? None. If it would be a “feat” badge then one could benefit most likely from some kind of boost. And perhaps that could be considered as “cheating”. But even then, against who would one gain such advantage? Against who would be one cheating? Against him or herself? We would be talking about deep psychological stuff here. Against the malevolent wolf AI? Against the blizzard god? That’s right: against no real-life person, really.

This is neither CoD nor a hardcore multiplayer game where cheaters ruin the gaming experience of other users. This is The Long Dark, a single-player-taylor-made-customizable survival experience. With no leaderboards (even though they existed to some extent in the past until they were removed). With no competition. With no on-line interaction with other people (aside from these forums). With no messing with other player’s gaming experiences.

And that’s why this game is so rich. Because each time we fire up our gaming rigs, everyone of us can get to live and contemplate the Quiet Apocalypse as we really see fit at that very moment.

People may think I am a cheater. Well, I just think I play the game as I feel like at the time. And what is more important, the way the game allows me to.

Because, as someone once said: “the code is law”.

  3. Well, then. I want to shout out that I cheated.

    As @monsieur_cronky very well stated:

“While I think most people value badges to a large extent because they serve as a reminder of a small triumph, some people also see an element of value in them as a collector's item. Not unlike collecting merchandise, it's a visual reinforcement of a connection to something you love. It's not necessarily one or the other, it can be a mixture of both elements.”

I love The Long Dark for what it is, with its goods and bads. For what it has meant to me at many stages of my life. And I don’t feel that I have to prove anything to anyone. I have the Platinum trophy in my PS4 and thousands of hours (literally) put into the game. Does that make me a better player than others? On a side note: I don’t think it does (I just suck at Loper).

I don’t consider myself better or worse for having “cheesed” (and not “cheated”) the badge. If anything, a mere collector. A completionist who perhaps doesn’t have at this moment enough time or energy to invest into the game he so deeply loves.

In the end, i think it boils down to a matter of fulfilment. I feel fulfilled. And I don’t think that I’ve harmed anyone for that.

And to those who judge, please try not to do it in front of a tree. Step aside and picture the whole forest first.

P.S.- Hats off to everyone who plays hard to get the badge, no matter if they get it or not. You have my respect and admiration.

What does that mean in English?

It’s a way of achieving something by taking advantage of an existing game feature. In this case, getting the badge by relaunching the same saved game several times and drinking the same syrup(s) again and again. It’s a bit tedious but not as time consuming as launching different saves or playing multiple long runs.

Interesting, I haven't made much use of the fishing pond in PV as it is too far from a shelter for my taste.

There is a two-layer cave not too far, uphill from the nearby picnic tables and close to the map’s edge. Plus sometimes you get the bunker spawn also around that same area (except in loper, of course).

I exit from the ground floor crouched, and get wolfed immediately.

I'm sorry to hear of such an unfortunate ending. Hibernia is a death trap where wolves lurk at leisure, but the working bench makes it a mandatory place to visit. When I'm there I like to go in and out through the office stairs, just above the lockers thrown on the snow outside. On top of the stairs there is a roof which prevents a full scouting of the area, but at least you can see rather well if any wolves are around.

As always, thanks for sharing your stories. It's a great way of knowing tips and tricks, and also make up a really good read! Keep them coming. :):coffee:

So I think the total number of interior locations remains the same in each game, it's just that the entrances to those locations move around on the map depending on how the intact and destroyed houses are arranged based on the template used for that run.

This definitely makes a lot of sense. I guess it would require a bit more study from TLD scientific community.

Good to know I was wrong about that.  Thanks (and phew!).

Let's say I am almost sure (many survival experiences have happened since then and I may get a bit mixed up!). Hopefully @piddy3825 will get the achievement and may share with us his experience on burned out buildings.

@Senauer, thanks for the list.  Although I am almost certain that I've hit each of these spaces, I do it over again when I get home from work tonight.  Appreciate your detailed list of destinations, you assistance here greatly appreciated!

You're welcome! Best of luck :):coffee:

  9. I did complete this achievement a few months back and as far as I recall, I did it even with burned out buildings.

Back then, only structures were required -- no caves or cars.

This is true. And I also checked that only buildings with loading screens apply - no outlooks needed, then.

For what is worth, I'm pasting below the checklist that I followed. Of course, spoilers ahead ;)

    Mystery Lake

    - Camp Office.

    - Lake Cabins south of the office, by the lake shore. Two sets of buildings plus a last cabin near the bear cave at the far end of the lake.

    - Trapper’s Homestead.

    - Cabin between Unnamed Pond and Clearcut, as you walk from the first to the latter with the cliffs at the edge of the map to your left. It has a rabbit grove next to it.

    - Logging Camp, three trailers.

    - Carter Hydro Dam & Environs. The dam itself plus the two trailers by the fence.

    Coastal Highway

    - Train Unloading. Trailer next to the collapsed tunnel, as you enter from the Ravine. The road downhill from this trailer will get you to another trailer (after the first right-turn curve, check on the low side to your left). From this trailer start walking with the logs to your right and the slope that you came from to your left, and behind a brief slope you will find a cabin in a small clearing.

    - Rabbit Grove cabin.

    - Fishing Camp cabins. Also, there is another cabin within walking distance: go uphill leaving the workbench and the coast to your back, and you will find such cabin to your left, after the steep slope.

    - Log Sort trailer.

    - Jackrabbit Island’s house.

    - Misanthrope’s Homestead.

    - Waterfront Cottages (those that are not burned).

    - Coastal Townsite. Quonset Garage plus all available cabins in the vicinity, i.e., between the main road (next to the garage front door) and the back road (parallel to the previous). Also, all cabins that might be still standing by the shore line, plus the house uphill tucked away from the town, as you go up the road to Silent Clearing, on the first bend, in a small clearing to the right.

    - Silent Clearing’s nearby trailer. Next to a bear cave.

    - Group of cabins at the bottom of the climbing spot, downhill from the Abandoned Lookout. Can be reached from the trailer near Silent Clearing, or the one close to the Cinder Hills Mine entrance.

    - Cinder Hills Mine’s trailer. As you exit the mine, head down the first path to your right.

This did it for me. Hope it helps!

  10. Excellent read as always @Drifter Man, and congrats on an great and entertaining run!

If I recall correctly there is also a rabbit grove at the Ravine Basin, just outside the cave with the moss bed. It is a long rope down (and even longer when going back up), but with the proper preparation it could be worth to give it a shot and place some snares there as well.

Besides, you can also find plenty of fuel and cattails (plus sometimes a deer carcass?), which would make feasible going down there and trying that snaring spot at least for a couple of days. And possibly prep a cache for a potential Cave #3?  ;)

Pleasant Valley from the top of Signal Hill looks really... pleasant. Perhaps that's because those little fellas the wolves are not seen from here.5b64693cf14f2_TheLongDark_20180801115912.thumb.jpg.3a49ce862153fbad64108b31d785a947.jpg

And now I wish the screenshots would not show that I am freezing and I missed breakfast! It's PS4 gameplay so unfortunately I believe I cannot hide the icons. :(
